Chapter 1238: Chapter 149 : Through the Light of Love
*Eva*
All hope seemed to be lost as Daphne and I were chained to the altar and had literal daggers hovering above our heads. I remember squeezing my eyes shut, fearing that this was truly the end, and wishing that I could see my children and Jasper one last time before this twisted end.
And then the Moon Goddess very literally graced us with her presence.
After Varge was thrown into his endless prison, I stared down at my freed body in absolute shock, unable to wrap my head around the fact that we were alive and officially safe from Varge forever.
I hugged Rion and Daphne close, all our bodies shaking with sobs of relief. Daphne nudged me suddenly and I looked up to see Jasper, who was hurrying toward us.
I choked on yet another sob as I rushed toward him, throwing my arms around his neck. He hugged me fiercely before kissing me, and I realized that he was trembling as well.
I stepped out of Jasper’s hold and looked over to where the Moon Goddess was watching us with deep, all-knowing eyes. I felt my tiny insignificance as I carefully made my way toward her.
My heart felt like it was pounding in my ears as I dropped to my knees before her, my entire body still shivering in awe and relief at our narrow deliverance from Varge’s vile plan.
“Thank you for saving me and my family,” I said after a moment of silence as I lowered my head toward the floor of the cave.
I still couldn’t believe that I was in the presence of the Moon Goddess herself, and I couldn’t fathom the fact that the revered deity intervened to save us.
I also still couldn’t quite wrap my head around just how close Daphne and I came to resurrecting Hestia. I glanced back at where Varge had vanished through the portal and was barely able to suppress a shudder.
I wasn’t sure how long I stayed against the ground. I felt a gentle hand wrap around my arm and glanced up at Jasper as he carefully helped me up.
As he did so, the Moon Goddess started toward us, nearly taking my breath away. She was pure perfection with her silvery robes and flowing white hair that shimmered as she floated toward us.
Her fathomless eyes met mine knowingly. “Dear child, your suffering has ended. The shadow that haunted your line for so long shall plague this earth no more.”
I felt myself grow slightly dizzy as the Goddess’ musical voice seemed to waft around Jasper and me.
I could barely stifle a gasp as the Moon Goddess hovered directly in front of me. I dropped my eyes to the ground and felt them widen when I felt a warm spark go through me.
My head shot up and I was shocked to see that the Moon Goddess’ finger was brushing my forehead. A plethora of bright colors flashed in my eyes, and I felt my body trembling with renewed strength.
I looked down at myself when the Goddess withdrew her hand, and I could feel it deep in my bones that she had completely healed me.
“I have healed you,” she said in a powerful voice. “You will now be able to use the full strength of your gifts without risking your health.”
I sucked in a breath, tears filling my eyes and I once again bowed low to her, one hand over my chest as I felt my strong heart beating.
“My deepest gratitude is yours, now and forever,” I told her fervently.
The Goddess didn’t smile, but I somehow felt like she was pleased. By what, I couldn’t be sure.
The rest of us were ecstatic that this dark time was finally behind us, but I wondered if the Goddess simply viewed this as a task that she needed to complete. Varge was a dark force that had been throwing the world out of balance. Of course, he needed to be disposed of.
I took a deep breath then, relishing in my body that felt brand new and stronger than ever. I could almost feel the Goddess’ celestial magic coursing through my veins, though it could have just been my elation at finally not having to worry about my abilities taking me away from my loved ones.
Comforted by my own strength and by the Goddess’ soothing voice, I felt courage pulse through me to ask a burning question. “May I ask if it’s true that my boys were sired to one day resurrect the Dark Lord?”
I held my breath as the Goddess regarded me calmly. I feared the answer, but I needed to know.
The Moon Goddess’ deep eyes bore into mine and somehow through them at the exact same time.
The Moon Goddess reached out and gently set her fingertips against my cheek with a sad smile. Her voice was like smooth, warm velvet as she answered. “No, child. Though your sons and daughter inherit the gifted blood of the First Witch, they possess no darkness from Lycaon in their veins. The raving zealot Varge merely deluded himself to believe so.”
Jasper and I looked at each other and beamed at the news. Profound relief and joy washed over me as I digested the Goddess’ words.
Tears sprung to my eyes. That meant that my children were free from the grim fate that Varge had intended for them. They would be free to live the normal, carefree lives that they so deserved.
The gratitude became far too much to bear and before I knew what was happening, I threw my arms around the Moon Goddess. I could feel the shock from my family as I did so. A part of me was surprised as well, but it was completely overpowered by my thankfulness toward the deity.
I felt an immediate warmth and peace flow through me as I embraced the Moon Goddess. Her arms wrapped around me briefly, and even that short instant, she caused me to feel an otherworldly happiness that I would never be able to replicate.
The Moon Goddess started to ascend slowly but she smiled down at us. “Be sure to love your children with all of your hearts and raise them to be righteous and kind.”
“Yes, we will,” I said earnestly.
“Thank you for always watching over us and for saving us,” Daphne added, stepping forward before bowing low to the Goddess.
The four of us stood together and watched on in amazement as the Goddess floated up, her head tilted back and a warm glow surrounding her.
She sparkled for a moment, her long tresses flowing around her in a silvery halo. She gave us all one last gentle smile before vanishing in a flash of stars just as abruptly as she had arrived.
For a long moment, no one moved or even spoke. We just continued to stare up at where the Goddess had been just seconds earlier. We were all starstruck, almost as if we were unsure whether all of that had truly occurred.
Finally, almost as one, we all started to cheer and shout. Our warriors pumped their fists above their heads and started to chatter excitedly about the epic rescue that they had been a part of.
Rion hugged Daphne close to him, his hands on either side of her face as they gazed lovingly into each other’s eyes. They kissed sweetly, and I gave Daphne a teasing grin when they pulled apart and she caught my gaze.
I turned and threw my arms around Jasper’s neck, grinning jubilantly at him. He laughed and picked me up before spinning me around.
His lips found mine right as he set me back down on my feet. I melted against him, the overwhelming gratitude returning when I realized that I would get to stay with him forever, and that I no longer had to harbor the fear of being taken away from him or our children.
Surrounded by my loving family as well as our brave warriors, I let out a long breath as I stepped out of that accursed cave. We were all immediately bathed in moonlight, and I couldn’t help but grin widely at the sign of the Moon Goddess already smiling down on us once again. Our whole group basked in the moment of promised hope, the soothing nighttime breeze ruffling our hair as we headed toward home.
I glanced at Jasper as we led the way home, and his light eyes were warm and brimming with unbridled happiness. I mirrored the look. We were finally unfettered by lingering doubts and anxieties concerning destiny. I took Jasper’s hand in mine.
“I love you,” I told him.
It was a simple fact and one of my greatest truths.
“As I love you, Eva,” he said, his eyes darkening slightly with the seriousness behind the statement. Then, he grinned boyishly at me. “Let’s promise to never put one another through that kind of torment ever again, alright?”
I giggled, both amused and amazed that we were already cracking light jokes about what had occurred.
“Deal,” I said with a smirk.
Jasper kissed the top of my head and wrapped an arm around my shoulders as we walked, tucking me protectively against his side. “Let’s get home to our children.”
My heart fluttered at the way Jasper said, “our children.” I sighed with contentment as I thought of the boys and their baby sister.
Finally, the boys’ humble heritage seemed like a pure blessing and not a curse. They would be able to fully embrace their powers as a part of themselves, and I was so excited to be able to watch them learn to harness them. I was so proud of them already. A bright future awaited them and us, ours to shape together through the light of love.
Rion and Daphne caught up with us, and we exchanged grins as we started to walk side by side. Rion had an arm around Daphne’s shoulders as well, and I grinned at the protective way he held her as well.
Our guys would likely be even more attentive after this whole ordeal, but I knew both Daphne and I found their protectiveness sweet so long as they didn’t go overboard.
“Varge grabbed onto me at some point, and I got a glimpse of something while I tried to get away from him,” Daphne said to us in a low, serious voice.
Rion’s expression darkened as Daphne described Varge grabbing her. “What did you see?”
Daphne glanced up at him and then at me before answering. “Some of Varge’s twisted memories.” She shuddered delicately and Rion rubbed her arm soothingly. She smiled weakly at him in thanks before continuing. “I was able to get the name of the pack where your mother came from. You’re from a pack called Shadow Stone. It’s located on the islands of Eldoria of the South Seas, deep in the Dark Realm.”
Rion and I shared a look, and I could see my own shock reflected in his eyes.
It seemed like everyone was still extremely wired from all the excitement. When the gates of Thorn Forest came into view, our whole group rushed forward to reunite with loved ones.
I grabbed onto Rion’s shoulder and gestured for him to hang back with me while Jasper and Daphne dashed forward with the others.
I bit my lower lip. “What do you want to know now that we know where we’ve come from?” I asked, looking up at my brother seriously.
Rion lifted his head and got a far-off look in his eyes and at that moment, I felt some of the torment that he had gone through without me as a shadow passed over his face. His expression softened when he looked down at me though and he shrugged.
“Do you want to go check it out sometime?”
I was sure I had a similar far-away look in my eyes when he asked, but I nodded firmly. “Yes, one day.”
