Chapter 1229: Chapter 140 : Everything Else Could Wait
*Rion*
Daphne recovered well from childbirth. I was extremely attentive toward her, making sure she rested often. After just a few weeks, she was becoming restless and demanding to take on more of Lucian’s care.
I was thrilled to see her doing so well, and I immensely enjoyed watching her with our son.
Lucian was only a few weeks old and was already strong and thriving. Although he slept for most of the day, when he was awake, he was gazing around with wide eyes that resembled his mother’s.
I was already certain that he was going to be curious as well as courageous.
I held Lucian in the crook of my arm, cradling his little head carefully and just gazing at him. I had just finished feeding him a warm bottle and he was already beginning to drift off to sleep again. His eyes were focused on me as they started to drift shut.
I rocked him gently until he was breathing more deeply, indicating that he had fallen asleep. I smiled softly at Lucian’s sleeping form, unable to believe that I had a son.
I stroked his wispy hair and pressed a kiss to his forehead before placing him in the cradle that was by our bed.
I turned toward our bed, where Daphne had been napping, and was surprised to see her hazel eyes open and watching me, a content smile on her face.
I smirked at her and sat on the bed beside her so I could push some bangs away from her face. “Like what you see?” I teased.
She smiled sleepily at me and leaned into my touch. “Always,” she said with a giggle. She struggled a bit to sit up but then rewarded me with the sunny smile I loved so much. “How’s our little prince?”
“Just a little fussy,” I said. I rolled my eyes. “He much prefers having his mommy feed him.”
Daphne giggled but then the corners of her mouth twitched down. “I can’t believe how much he’s grown already.”
I often liked to tease Daphne about making comments like that toward our son, who wasn’t even a whole month old yet, but I understood what she meant.
I took both her hands in mine. “Let’s go home, Daphne.”
My wife’s hazel eyes sparkled as she gazed at me. “You think we really can?”
I nodded firmly. “Eva’s health is more stable than ever, and as long as you feel you are up to traveling since you’re still recovering from childbirth, I believe it’s finally time for us to return to Thorn Forest.”
Daphne tackled me suddenly, wrapping her arms around my neck.
I chuckled, feeling the excitement pouring off her. “I’ll take that as a yes.”
Our whole little family was ecstatic to learn that we were finally going home. Before departing, we decided to stop and thank the City Elders.
We stood before the wise leaders, the children barely able to keep still from their excitement.
“We can’t thank you all enough for all the guidance and support you’ve provided for us,” I told the small group of elders.
“It was an honor to serve a royal from the Crimson Palace as well as our brothers from Thorn Forest,” said the wise old man in the middle of the group. “We wish you all safe travels, and may the Goddess always watch over you.”
“Thank you,” Eva said, stepping forward and bowing her head low. “I promise to use my abilities sparingly and only for good.”
It was an old woman who nodded at Eva and offered her a kind smile. “While restraint is often a beneficial tool, we must implore you not to fear your abilities. They are a part of you. Allow them to flourish within reason.”
Eva’s eyes sparkled as she looked up at the Elder. She nodded seriously.
“We have gifts for the young ones,” another female Elder announced, descending the stairs with an intricate box with celestial patterns on it.
I accepted the box and once the lead Elder nodded, opened it up to reveal four glowing gemstone pendants and one tiny anklet made of gold-colored material.
“These are special amulets for the children,” said the lead elder. “They are meant to amplify their abilities should the need arise. It is our hope that these pendants will inspire them to fully harness their powers and to continue to use them for good.”
“I have no doubt that these generous gifts will ensure our children will grow up with respect and dignity toward their magic,” I said, touched by the powerful gifts.
“The anklet is for your son,” said the elder who had handed me the box. “Should he show evidence of having a gift of his own, you will be able to safely dampen them when needed until he is able to learn to control them on his own.”
“Thank you,” Daphne said, cradling a slumbering Lucian close to her chest, “for everything.”
The elders were kind enough to provide us with comfortable transport and a driver. The journey was slower with baby Lucian and Daphne still regaining her strength. We made several stops along the way to stretch our legs and allow the children to run off some energy.
“Are we really going to have our own room when we get to Thorn Forest, Mama?” Tarik asked Eva excitedly from his spot on her lap.
Eva stroked his hair fondly. “Yes, Tarik. That’s right. Although, you and Aster can even each have your very own room if you’d like.”
Tarik’s eyes rounded and he shot Aster an almost panicked look.
Aster read the look easily and turned his head to look up at Eva. “That’s okay, Mama. Tarik and I like to share a room.”
Daphne and Eva shared an amused but happy look at that. Aster was so young but always looking out for his younger brother.
I was surprised when Aster looked over at me next, his wide eyes shining. “And this will be our home forever, right Uncle Rion? We won’t ever have to leave?”
Eva and I glanced at one another, the mood in the room immediately changing with the innocent but heartbreaking question. “Yes, Aster,” I said with as much conviction as I could, hoping that he would believe me completely. “You and your brother will be able to stay in Thorn Forest for as long as you want. We’ll make sure of it.”
Aster relaxed, and he and Tarik beamed at one another.
“Thorn Forest is really pretty,” Selene chirped at her cousins, her hair flying everywhere as she bounced up and down in her seat.
“We have a lot of friends there that like to go on missions with us,” Ayla added, grinning at Aster and Tarik. “They’ll let you play with us too. It’ll be fun!”
Along the way, we decided to stop at Drogomor pack. Alpha Oliver greeted us with a friendly grin. He was joined by a couple of other pack members, and they ushered us through the gate to join them for a quick lunch before we continued on our way.
“I am relieved to see that you are all doing well,” Alpha Oliver said to me at the table. He leaned forward so that he could look at look over at Lucian, who was cradled in Daphne’s arms. “He is so young, but I already see much of you in him, Rion.”
Lucian was awake and his large eyes were focused on Alpha Oliver, who couldn’t help but grin down at my son.
I had been nervous about returning to Drogomor up until that moment even though he’d told us Eva’s boys were welcome. But it was obvious now that Alpha Oliver’s friendship was genuine. He was even kind enough to offer us the pack’s plane for us to travel the rest of the way to Thorn Forest, which we were extremely grateful for because it cut our travel time the rest of the way back in half.
The kids had their faces pressed to the window for practically the entire twelve-hour flight. It became obvious when we were close when the plane began its descent. Ayla and Selene pointed out our pack community as it came into view.
It was late afternoon when we finally landed. We were surprised to find our entire pack gathered, awaiting our return. They cheered as we stepped out of the plane, and our jaws dropped to see that our community had been decorated to celebrate our return.
Tarence and Alma, who we had put in charge during our absence, hurried forward to greet us.
“We are just thrilled that you are all home safe,” Alma gushed, hugging Daphne and cooing at little Lucian.
“I trust you will be pleased by the care we have provided for the pack while you were away, Alpha,” Tarence said as he reached for Daphne’s bag.
“I have no doubt, Tarence,” I said with genuine gratitude. I offered the vampire a grin. “Thank you for looking after everything while we were gone.”
Tarence’s dark eyes lit up, pleased by my praise. “You must all rest up before the big feast tonight.”
“We organized a feast in order to celebrate your return,” Alma said after hugging each of our girls.
It felt like we barely had enough time to return briefly to our homes to unpack our things and unwind just a bit before we changed clothes and rushed back out to the plaza for the feast.
None of us expected the grand welcome upon our arrival, but we were grateful for it all the same, especially since Aster and Tarik were seeing Thorn Forest for the first time.
Their eyes were wide, and they shyly waved at our pack members as Eva introduced them. The pack was immediately taken with the little boys, just as they were with Ayla and Selene.
As we ate a delicious meal, the atmosphere was thick with excitement and life. There was much to celebrate with our return, including the birth of our son. It was probably the most joyous of our celebrations with enthusiastic dancing and jubilant chatter.
The night was perfect, the moon full and high as if the Goddess was watching over us and smiling down upon our pack. The children played and giggled as they ran through the plaza. I had never seen the boys so happy. Their little faces practically glowed as they thoroughly enjoyed the party.
As wonderful as the night was, I was relieved when it ended and I was able to return to our mansion with my wife and children. We tucked baby Lucian up in his new cradle that some of the men in our pack had built upon hearing about his birth before we helped the girls get ready for bed.
They were chattering happily the whole time about the adventures they’d already made up with their cousins and some of the other children in the pack. Although they clearly had loads of fun, their large eyes shut almost as soon as their little heads hit the pillows.
Daphne and I both let out a long breath as we were finally surrounded by silence. As I turned to face her, I couldn’t help but be filled with profound gratitude as the gravity of all that had happened finally settled in this moment of peace.
I wrapped my arms around Daphne’s waist, crushing her to me, just relishing in the fact that I finally had my family safely in our home, despite the looming threat of Varge. For now, I wanted to cherish this moment.
“I love you,” I murmured against Daphne’s sweet-scented hair. I cradled her face in my hands and lifted her eyes to mine to find that they were filled with happy tears.
“I love you too,” she said, her voice full of emotion. A single tear slid down her cheek as she beamed up at me. “Welcome home.”
I smiled and kissed her deeply before leading her to our bedroom. For now, I was determined to make sure that my family lived each day to the fullest. We were extremely blessed to be able to watch the children grow. I was hopeful now that Eva’s health and magic were stable and that they would stay that way.
I had everything I needed and could possibly ever want right now.
Everything else could wait.
