Chapter 1217: Chapter 128 : Out of Danger
*Rion*
Jasper and the Thorn Forest warriors burst through the front door just as I made it to the first floor. Jasper nodded to me, and we jumped into the fight with Oliver and his warriors.
Varge was pinned under Oliver, his eyes wide as he saw me approaching. I licked my jowls and growled, stalking closer to him.
“Enough!” Varge jumped up and tore his shirt in two. He growled and shifted into his monstrous, misshapen wolf form. He let out a maniacal, wild howl, his eyes bright and dangerous.
‘Don’t let him escape!’ Oliver ordered.
Jasper, I, and the rest of the warriors around me shifted and started closing in on Varge.
‘Drive him outside.’
Eva rose into the air, her eyes white hot. Wind whipped around her and spun around Varge like a tornado. He roared and swatted at the vortex with his paws. It was no use.
Eva directed the tornado, pushing Varge outside. Oliver and his warriors followed and the fight moved outside.
I went to follow, but Eva fell to the floor with a thump. She didn’t get up.
“Eva!” Jasper ran to her, half naked from attempting to shift. He knelt beside her. “She’s unconscious.”
‘Get Eva to the healer immediately!’ I ordered.
Jasper nodded and scooped her into his arms. He held her against his chest tenderly and I knew I could trust him to take care of my sister.
Snarling, I followed the warriors outside to chase down Varge. In the distance, I could hear my warriors and Oliver’s men snarling and howling as they gave chase.
It was easy to catch up to them. Varge’s monstrous wolf-form lumbered through the woods, crashing into trees and bouncing around.
‘He can’t keep up this pace forever! Keep him on the run,’ I told my warriors through the mind-link. They howled their replies and kept going.
I caught up to Oliver, also in wolf form. He nodded at me, and we both surged ahead.
Varge’s wolf form was too large and required too much energy. I knew that the more we chased him, the more exhausted he would become.
This was our chance to end him once and for all.
Suddenly, Varge tripped and thudded to the ground. A tremor went through the earth, knocking us all back.
I rolled and jumped back to my feet. While the others recovered, I raced toward Varge, his massive, hulking form sliding across the ground and taking out small trees and bushes as he went.
He’d be slow to recover. This was our chance.
‘Let’s get him!’ I howled.
Oliver was right behind me. As we closed in on Varge, he shuddered and shifted back to human form. Panting, Varge looked around, eyes wild.
“You think you can stop me?”
I snarled and licked my lips, closing in on him. He was covered in blood and sweat, one of his legs bent at an odd angle. There was no way he was getting up to run again.
I pounced and pinned Varge to the ground, slamming his face into the dirt.
“If you kill me, you’ll never get your answers.”
I lowered my snout to his face and uttered a low, threatening growl and peeled my lips back, showing my teeth.
Varge stopped trying to negotiate for his life.
“Don’t kill him, Rion.” Oliver appeared, naked. “He could still be of use to us.”
I snorted and shook my head. There was no way we could trust Varge or any information he gave us. It wouldn’t take him long to recover, either.
Oliver held up a dampening bracelet. “I had this specially made. It is the most powerful dampening charm in the Light and Dark Realms. Varge will be powerless.”
I nodded and Oliver approached. He slapped the bracelet on Varge.
“I’ve got it from here. My men will begin the interrogation,” Oliver told me.
I backed off and watched as Oliver and his men dragged Varge away.
It was over. He was finally captured. My entire body sighed with relief. As I watched them take Varge away, I yearned to go with them and interrogate him. I wanted to sink my teeth into him, scratch his eyes out, and shred his flesh....
Snorting, I shook my head and the thick ruff of fur around my neck. It was too personal for me. Oliver was right. He could handle it and get answers. I could step in after I’d cooled off and got ahold of myself and my wolf.
Right now, I needed to check on Daphne, the children, and Eva.
‘Jasper, where are you?’ I reached out with the mind-link.
‘At the healer’s office. They are examining Eva now.’
‘I’ll be there shortly.’
I lifted my nose to the air and searched through all the different scents until I found the only one that mattered.
Daphne.
I rushed around the back of the house and followed her trail to the outer forest. She hadn’t got far with four kids in tow, but she wasn’t anywhere out in the open. I located her and the kids.
As soon as she saw me, she ran over.
“Rion?”
I nodded.
She threw her arms around my neck. “I was so worried about you. What’s going on?”
I stepped back and shifted into my human form.
Daphne cleared her throat, her cheeks reddening. She dug into her backpack, the one with supplies for running off, and pulled out a pair of pants.
“Thank you, my love.” I slipped them off quickly. “Come here, Ayla, Selena.”
I held my arms out to the girls. They ran to me, and I scooped them up, holding one in each arm.
“We should get back to the pack mansion. Eva’s in trouble.”
“What happened?” Daphne gasped. She grabbed Aster and Tarik’s hands and tugged them along behind me.
“We captured Varge. It was a hell of a battle, but we came out victorious.”
“Please, tell me he is dead,” Daphne said desperately.
“He’s being interrogated, but he’s powerless now. There’s still a lot of cleanup to do and Eva... she used a lot of her magic and collapsed.”
We hurried back to the mansion and dropped the kids off with the remaining daycare staff. Other than being tired and a little shaken, the kids were perfectly fine.
Daphne had a hard time leaving them. She kissed the girls over and over again and apologized for acting strangely earlier.
I didn’t want to rush her because I felt the same guilt at letting my kids down.
When the kids were settled, we joined Jasper at the healer’s office.
“What’s going on?” I demanded when we entered.
The healer and several staff members were moving about rapidly. I saw them mixing different tonics and teas. I saw one counting out medicinal pills.
Jasper stood against a back wall, his face pale, eyes wide.
“Jasper?”
“They won’t tell me anything.” He shrugged, looking slightly dazed.
“Whoever is in charge, tell me what is going on right now!” I demanded.
The bustle stopped for a moment. Almost immediately, everyone went back to work. One of the healers came up to me, a somber look on her face.
“Eva is not doing well.”
My heart rate ticked up. “What is wrong with her?”
“She expended too much of her energy when she used her magic. If we can’t stabilize her... well, her chances aren’t good. Right now, we need to take the strain off her body so she can replenish her own energy.”
“Is there anything I can do?”
The healer shook her head. “Stay out of our way and let us work.”
I sighed and stepped back. It was hard not to burst in and take charge, but I knew I didn’t have what it took to save Eva in this matter. I had to let the healers do their work.
“Let’s give them space to work. We’ll come back and check on her soon.”
I took Daphne’s hand and nodded toward Jasper. He followed us out.
Daphne and I returned to the kids.
“How is Mom?” Aster asked.
“The healers are with her now,” I explained.
Daphne went right to the twins and fawned all over them. I wanted to reassure Eva’s sons that they had family here with us, even if Eva didn’t recover.
“Will she be okay?” Aster’s eyes were wide and scared.
“We don’t know yet, but the healers will let us know soon.”
Aster hugged Tarik and murmured something soft to his younger brother. A slight smile tugged at my lips as I watched them. They reminded me of Eva and myself when we were kids. All we had was each other, and it was because of the same man who had taken my nephews.
At least the two of them weren’t separated. I promised myself that I would never force them apart.
The healer sent word later that day. Eva was stabilized but still unconscious. Until she woke up, it would be touch and go, but she was out of imminent danger.
Daphne and I brought the boys to visit with her. I sat by Eva’s side and took her hand.
“I’m here, Eva. So is Jasper and your sons.” I nodded to them. “Take her hand, talk to her. She’ll like that.”
Aster cautiously took Eva’s hand. “Hi, Mom.”
Daphne stood behind me and put a hand on my shoulder. “Whatever you need, Rion, I’m here, okay?”
“Thank you.” I covered her hand with mine.
Eva was motionless on the bed. She was pale and looked small, like all her essence had been sucked out of her. I hated seeing her like that, but I couldn’t take my eyes off of her.
The only upside was that Varge, the man responsible for all of this, was imprisoned and being brutally interrogated. I wanted to believe that the danger was finally over, but a darkness in my heart told me we weren’t out of the woods yet.
***
Eva passed the night without any incident. I stayed with her and let Aster and Tarik stay, too. Daphne wanted to be with our daughters, and I wasn’t going to get between that.
A healer stopped by regularly to check on Eva. She checked her vitals and administered a few medications, but she didn’t have any idea when Eva would wake up.
“When will she wake up?” Tarik asked me the next morning.
I sighed and ruffled his hair. “I don’t know, Buddy. Your mother is the strongest person I know, though. She’s spent a long time trying to get the two of you back, and she’s going to fight with all her might to get back to you two now, okay?”
Tarik smiled and nodded. He picked up Eva’s hand and started talking to her about how much he missed her.
“Alpha Rion.”
I glanced to the door and saw several of Oliver’s men standing there. They had serious looks on their faces.
“What is it?” I stood up and walked over to them. I didn’t want the boys to hear anything that would upset them more.
“We’re here to take Aster and Tarik into custody. Oliver’s orders.”
