Chapter 1207: Chapter 118 : Like a Pendulum

*Rion*

I glanced at Jasper as we dropped into a heap behind some bushes, out of sight of the gruesome battle raging on. I hoped he could see the gratitude on my face.

My best friend was a bit bruised and scratched up, but I was relieved to see that he seemed fine otherwise. He panted and then looked over at me, nodding to the nonverbal thanks I had sent his way.

I flexed my muscles, feeling for any injuries. I had some scratches and bruises as well, but nothing serious. I ached like crazy as well from when Varge violently threw me aside. Thanks to my healing ability, I was already feeling better and knew in just mere minutes, I would be ready to rejoin the battle.

I thanked the Goddess constantly for my uncanny ability to heal. Anyone else probably would have died instantly from being hit with such force.

I looked at my friend when I heard him suck in a sharp breath. “It isn’t looking good, is it?”

I followed his gaze to the battle. Our warriors were still going strong but just didn’t seem to be making much of an impact. From a distance, our men looked like flies bouncing off the large beast.

I heard a frustrated growl ripping from my chest as I looked on.

For the first time since the fight started, I wondered if we were really going to make it.

Jasper suddenly gasped causing my head to whip around so I could look at his shocked expression. “Eva!”

Panic filled me as I saw my baby sister scrambling up Varge’s back. My heart nearly stopped when she made it to the top and started to claw desperately at the chains that were binding her sons.

“Let’s go!” Jasper shouted, moving to burst from our brush cover.

I growled sharply and jumped in front of him, keeping him from doing so.

“What the hell, Rion?” he snapped angrily, trying to shove past me, but I stood my ground, giving him a firm look.

He looked confused for a brief second but then his eyes rounded as he understood. If we were to go out there now and try to help, it could put Eva in more danger should Varge move violently while trying to fend us off.

My careful plan backfired, however. It was obvious that Varge knew Eva was on top of him. He started to thrash around violently, slamming his body into the rock wall behind him.

Eva started to slip but was able to recover and make it back to her boys. We could just barely make out a flash of her magic as one of the chains broke, freeing one of the boys. Just as Eva scooped him up into her arms, Varge roared and swiped at his back, catching Eva’s side.

We heard Eva cry out as she fell off the beast’s side. Jasper and I sprinted toward her, myself in the lead thanks to my wolf.

Eva was panting heavily when I got to her, her child swaddled safely in her arms. I bent over her, snapping at Varge’s talons as they came at us. I was somehow able to fend him off long enough for a couple of warriors to come to our aid.

They scooped Eva up and started to sprint off to find cover. I followed closely while the rest of our men continued to fight against Varge.

Jasper was already at Eva’s side as one of our men lowered my sister gently to the ground. She was bleeding heavily and panting with pain, but she still clung to her son, who was resting peacefully in her arms.

“Aster,” she gasped out, looking up at me pleadingly. “Please go get him. He’s still out there!”

“Shh,” Jasper murmured gently to her, pushing some of her dark hair away from her face. “We’ll go get him. Don’t worry. You need to rest now.”

Thankfully we thought to have a healer hidden nearby should we need one. The young male hurried to Eva’s side, already pulling some supplies out of his pack.

“Can’t you move any faster?” Jasper snapped at the young guy.

It looked as if the skinny healer was doing the best he could, but I still seconded Jasper’s sentiment, although my best friend’s intensity did seem to make the boy more nervous as he pulled some thick bandages out of his bag and knelt by Eva.

“Her wounds are deep,” he muttered, more to himself than to us.

“No, don’t heal me,” Eva snapped at him. “Please look at my baby first!”

“Eva!” Jasper protested. “He needs to get your bleeding stopped.”

“No!” My sister cried stubbornly. “I won’t let you until you look at my baby!”

The healer had little choice due to Eva’s stubbornness, so he quickly checked the child over. “He appears to be fine, just unconscious,” he said to Eva. “Now, please let me clean your wound, Miss Eva.”

Eva obeyed, hissing in pain when a thick cloth was pressed to her side to stop the bleeding. I growled sharply as I watched my baby sister’s face twist up in agony.

Eva had been through enough pain to last a thousand lifetimes. This was where it was going to end once and for all.

“Rion?”

I turned to glance at my sister, who was watching me with wide gray eyes. She was still grimacing with pain, but she was now focused on me. She stared at me for a moment before she seemed to recognize the murderous expression on my face. She smirked. “Give him hell, Brother,” she ordered. “Give him hell and bring me my baby back.”

I nodded, baring my teeth slightly to show just how I was planning on giving that bastard hell. I turned to Jasper and gave him a warning look, telling him with just my eyes that he had better watch over my sister.

Jasper looked torn as if he wanted to be fighting by my side, but he nodded once. "I won’t leave her side, Rion."

I turned to go then, feeling the power of my wolf propelled me through the bushes as I tore through the brush and back into the fray. I no longer saw the ferocious beast in front of me as I sprinted forward. All I saw was the worthless, vile scum that had hurt my sister and tried to have my daughters kidnapped.

He was going to pay dearly.

My vision tinted red from my anger, I dove right for the beast’s legs, planning to take him down. I dug my teeth hard into one, causing the monster to cry out. I clawed at the same leg, my teeth still ripping through the scales and flesh of the dark one. I could taste its blood and it just fueled my fury.

I was only vaguely aware of the other warriors continuing to attack the rest of Varge’s massive beastly form. I focused solely on the legs, digging my claws and teeth into them over and over. Varge thrashed, kicking and trying to dislodge me from his leg but I held on stubbornly. Blood seemed to be gushing in all directions.

Finally, Varge started to teeter, his massive body swaying side to side like a pendulum. His legs were almost completely torn up, sheets of scales hanging from his limbs, and deep red blood running down in rivers. I took this as the perfect opportunity to deliver the final blow.

Varge looked ready to retreat, turning to face the mouth of the cave, but he was much too late. With a roar, I threw myself into Varge’s leg with all my strength and weight.

The monster stumbled but the blood loss and the sorry state of his shredded legs was too much, and he went toppling forward. Our men scattered in all directions like a horde of ants to avoid the body of the beast as it crashed to the jungle floor.

The whole forest seemed to rattle when the massive body contacted the ground. I wasted no time jumping on top of Varge’s grounded form, my eyes locked onto my unconscious nephew, who was still safely chained to the scaly back of our enemy.

Thankfully, a couple of Oliver’s warriors followed me and were able to use their blades to cut the chains off of the boy. One of them carefully scooped Aster up and we all descended from the monster’s body.

We prepared to take the boy to Eva, but the beast’s body suddenly started to glow and shrink. We watched as Varge returned to his human form. He was screaming a long string of observations in a frightening voice, his wide dark eyes wild with anger and hatred. His legs were bruised and bleeding, but he stared up at us with rage.

"You think you have me beat, but you’ve only seen a mere fraction of my true power," he spat, blood dripping from his mouth. "You will pay for this. You are no longer worthy of the quick, painless death I initially had planned for you all!"

I growled sharply at him, baring my teeth which were likely still stained with his blood.

But Varge wasn’t the least bit intimidated by me. He just started to laugh maniacally before his body started to glow once again. We all backed away as Varge started to grow exponentially.

"Fall back!" Alpha Oliver ordered.

We all obeyed, sprinting back toward the trees. Jasper obviously heard us coming. He had Eva cradled in his arms. I lowered myself to the ground so he could place her on my back. He did so before jumping up behind her so he could hold her in place while we made our escape.

"Wait! My babies!"

"Shh, they’re both safe," he murmured to her as I started to sprint through the trees.

Eva sighed heavily and I could tell from her voice that her eyes were starting to close. "Thank you," she murmured. And then she fell silent.

I whined worriedly.

"She’s fine," Jasper assured me. I could hear the smile in his voice. "She can finally get some real rest now that her children are safe."

I could feel my body relaxing. We could deal with everything else once Eva woke up. The important thing was that my nephews were finally safe.

We didn’t slow down until we were at the edge of the jungle near base camp.

For miles, we could hear the enraged roar of the beast. Thankfully, it eventually faded into nothing, signaling that he wasn’t following us.

We decided to take a quick break to tend to some of the more serious wounds. I was grateful because that gave me a chance to shift back to my human form. Eva would be riding with Jasper on one of the horses that had been left out of sight during the battle.

I radioed Alpha Oliver about our status so he could join us.

I stepped out from behind some trees that I used as a cover while I changed. I froze at what saw.

Several of our men were sitting side by side on a log, barely able to keep their heads up. They didn’t seem badly injured, but something was definitely wrong.

Our healer had a piece of cloth tied around his nose and mouth so that only his eyes were visible. He was carefully examining one of the men, peering into his mouth.

"What’s going on?" I asked Jasper, who was watching from a distance with his arms crossed.

"A bunch of the guys have grown ill," my best friend answered. "The healer thinks it could be the plague."

My eyes widened as I digested this. Alpha Oliver arrived at that moment, his face lined with concern.

"The timing has me wondering if Varge is behind this sickness," I said to the other Alpha.

“You’re right,” he said, sounding strained. "We’d best hold off on returning to Drogomor or we’d risk spreading it to the entire pack."

In the next moment he swayed, and I helped get him back to camp and into his tent. I realized that this was a trap after all.
