Chapter 1205: Chapter 116 : One Shot
*Daphne*
After a fitful night of sleep, I opened my eyes, my arm searching for the warmth of my husband, but grabbed onto nothing but air. I blinked tiredly, rubbing an arm across my face before sitting up. I felt the weight from the lack of sleep slam into me as I squinted toward the window beside the bed.
The room was still dark, but the sky was starting to lean away from the nearly black midnight blue to more of a periwinkle. Dawn was approaching.
But where was Rion?
I threw my bare feet over the side of the bed, trying to shake the sleep out of my brain. I crossed the room to where the twins were sound asleep in the crib that we were able to borrow from one of the other pack members. It was made for one child, but the girls were small enough to where that didn’t really matter.
I smiled softly down at them when I squinted and saw that they were cuddled up to each other. Ayla had somehow rotated so that her foot was in Selene’s face. I giggled lightly before gently moving Ayla’s foot away from her sister’s chin. I pushed some of their curls away from their foreheads before giving them each a loving kiss.
My daughters were actually fairly deep sleepers. I giggled again and shook my head, wondering where they could have gotten that trait from. Both Rion and I were fairly light sleepers.
Speaking of Rion, I adjusted the thin pink quilt a little better around my daughters before quietly leaving the room in search of my husband.
It didn’t take me very long to find him. He was at the end of the dim hallway, staring out the small window that overlooked a garden. I crept up behind him even though I could tell that he heard me coming. I gave him a look up and down to find that he was already dressed in dark jeans and a thin black T-shirt.
I stepped up to him and wrapped my arms around his waist from behind. He didn’t turn or anything to face me, but I did feel some of the tension leave his body as I pressed up to his back.
“Did you sleep at all?” I asked, hearing the concern in my own voice.
Rion turned in my arms and looped his arms around my waist. I pressed myself against his chest, inhaling his slightly woody scent. I felt him bend slightly so he could press a kiss to the top of my head.
He held me tightly for a few moments before answering. “No,” he finally said with a deep sigh. “Every time I tried and closed my eyes, all I saw was....”
His voice trailed off.
It wasn’t difficult to understand what he was referring to. It was what was keeping us all from sleeping the night before. I had never met Priest Varge, but even his photograph was enough to instill fear in me.
I couldn’t even imagine what kind of horrible person would lead a group that specialized in kidnapping children and using them for their own personal gain.
Rion was definitely worse off than I was. I was fortunate enough to have no actual memories of this man since I had the pleasure of never meeting him.
I could see the shadows beneath Rion’s gray orbs, emphasizing the fact that he didn’t sleep last night. I traced one of the shadows with the pad of my thumb before resting my hand against his cheek.
"Everything is going to be fine," I murmured soothingly, just like I had to his sister just hours earlier. I gave him a tiny smile. "You don’t have to do anything alone. We’re going to get through this and figure it out together."
Rion gritted his teeth together. His eyes bore into mine, and I could see that he desperately wanted to believe me, but he was too devastated by all that had happened and all that we had learned. He was trying to carry on, but I could tell that this was really starting to wear him down.
I cupped both his cheeks in my hands, tilting his head down slightly so that he was looking directly at me. "Hey, it’s going to be alright," I told him firmly. "If anyone can find Eva’s boys and bring them back safely, it’s going to be you. I know it. You’ve never let any of us down before."
Rion smiled slightly but his eyes were still full of doubt. "I don’t want to start now."
"You won’t," I told him fiercely, shuddering at the thought. I held his face more tightly, feeling desperation start to well up inside of me. "Our family needs you to be strong more than ever. Do it for our girls, and for your nephews as well. We’re all counting on you, Rion."
Miraculously, my little pep talk worked. I saw Rion’s jaw clench and his gray eyes darken with determination. This was the Rion I knew, the one who was almost confident to a fault and would do anything for his family.
He was the Rion I’d fallen in love with.
Without a word, Rion nodded firmly and pulled me into his arms for another embrace.
Rion and I headed down the stairs hand in hand to find that the others were awake as well. They were in the sitting room, but ironically, they were all standing.
Alpha Oliver was standing in front of a large map that had been pinned to the wall. Eva and Jasper were standing next to him, looking over the map.
Alpha Oliver noticed us enter the room first. "Excellent," he said nodding to us both. "We can begin."
Rion squeezed my hand as we crossed the room to stand with Eva and Jasper, who nodded curtly to us as well. Jasper and Rion shared a dark look.
The tension in the room was high and seemed to be rising steadily. Eva hadn’t looked at either Rion or me, her dark eyes focused solely on the map tacked to the wall.
Oliver wasted no time, gesturing toward the map as soon as Rion and I were next to Eva and Jasper. "My sources have confirmed that Varge has a base about ten miles into the Southern Jungle." He pointed to the cluster of trees that took up most of the map.
We silently studied the map as the Alpha spoke. There were thick, winding lines that went through the forest, but their strange pattern didn’t quite match up to any of the trails that went through the jungle.
Before I could even think about asking, Oliver ran his fingers over those weird lines. "The base is cleverly hidden in an underground network of caves within the jungle. This unfortunately will make infiltrating the base undetected that much more difficult, but I believe we’ve come up with a solid tactic."
"And what would that be?" Jasper asked with just a touch of impatience.
Oliver didn’t seem the slightest bit bothered by Jasper’s curt tone. "There are entrances into the underground labyrinths on both the south and the north. Our current plan is to send teams through both entrances."
Rion stiffened, his expression darkening with disapproval. "You’re suggesting that we divide our forces." It wasn’t a question. It was clear what the Alpha was planning.
Oliver turned to Rion and nodded firmly. "By sending separate teams to cover both entrances, we will successfully be able to box our adversaries inside the base."
Eva and I shared a wide-eyed look as we listened to the Alpha’s plan. This was beginning to sound even more dangerous than we originally feared.
Eva turned her intense, worried gaze to Oliver. "What will that mean for my sons?" Eva demanded, her voice rising an octave so her eyes rounded. "If the extremists find themselves trapped, they could do something rash, and my boys could be hurt in the process!"
Jasper put a hand on her shoulder, half to soothe her and half to restrain her since she looked ready to throttle Oliver for his risky plan.
Oliver nodded, making it clear that he had already considered this conundrum. "I made it abundantly clear to my men that the safety of your sons is our number one priority."
"And how will their safety be considered during such a risky attack?" Eva asked through her teeth, making it obvious that she was not the least bit placated by the Alpha’s reassurance.
Oliver actually glanced at the small but fierce woman a bit nervously, but he was able to respond confidently. "We’ll send a small, specialized team ahead to infiltrate the base and extract the children before launching the full attack."
Eva relaxed slightly, seeming satisfied with this plan. I was only a tiny bit relieved as well. I still didn’t like much of this plan, even though it did seem like the option that gave us the best chance.
It was clear that Rion felt similarly to me. Although he didn’t let go of my hand, he stepped forward and pinned the other Alpha with a frown. "I don’t like the idea of dividing our forces," he stated flatly. “I think we should all stay together to lower the chances of being surrounded.”
I stepped closer to Rion, needing to feel him against me as fear shot through me at the thought of my friends and family outnumbered. I sucked in a breath as I imagined Eva and Rion, back-to-back as they faced off against dozens of enemies on their own.
I shuddered delicately, causing Rion to put an arm around me, tucking me close to his side. He glanced down at me briefly, concern swimming in his gray eyes. I just shook my head slightly, just for him, letting him know that it was nothing.
“I understand your concern,” Oliver said but he shook his head. “However, I must insist that we go in two separate teams. We want the element of surprise on our side. We’ll also be able to invade the base quicker in smaller groups.”
I saw the other Alpha’s point, but that didn’t mean that it was any less risky. Rion looked like he was going to argue further.
Oliver stepped forward before Rion could get one word out. “I must implore you to trust me, Alpha Rion,” he said in a persuasive tone. “This plan will give us the best chance at securing the boys while catching Varge off guard. And plus, we’ll have an elite group with the palace warriors that will be joining us. We have a high possibility of success.”
I tried my best to take Oliver’s words to heart. He had a point. With the royal warriors that my parents had sent over and with Eva’s powerful magic, I did feel like there was a real chance that they would bring the boys back safely.
Rion still seemed unsure, but even he appeared a bit more convinced than he had been. I did feel like Oliver was putting a little too much faith in the element of surprise. Even if they did manage to shock the faction, we still had no way of knowing just how powerful this group was.
Eva stepped forward. “I believe that we will succeed,” she said, straightening and pinning us all with a serious look. “Alpha Oliver is right. We have the advantage here with the royal warriors and with our current plan.”
“We’ll get your sons back,” Jasper said, putting a hand on her shoulder and squeezing it tightly.
“We have to,” Rion agreed, stepping forward as well.
Eva actually smiled at all of us. “Thank you,” she said sincerely. “I’m putting all my trust in you all. We only have one shot at saving my children.”
