Chapter 1203: Chapter 114 : The Dark Lord Incarnate
*Rion*
“I want to know what the snake has to say,” Eva insisted, following me toward Oliver’s interrogation room.
“Eva, I don’t think you want to see how these interrogations go.”
Eva scoffed. “Come on, like I haven’t seen or caused worse in my time. Please, Rion, I need to know for myself who this Varge is and anything he knows about my boys.”
I sighed heavily and nodded. Eva had a right to hear it all. It wasn’t just our past. Her sons were involved and as a worried parent, I couldn’t imagine not knowing.
“Alright, but you’re there only to observe, okay? If this guy knows you have a personal stake in the information he has, he won’t talk.”
Eva rolled her eyes. “Please, give me a little more credit than that. I know how interrogations go.”
Oliver already had the Lycaon extremist tied to a chair in an empty room with blank, white walls. There were no windows. The door was heavy, and I bolted it shut as soon as Eva and I were inside.
Oliver arched an eyebrow and nodded toward Eva.
“She’s just here to observe. Though... if this guy refuses to talk, she might have a few persuasive tricks up her sleeve.”
“Very well.”
Despite what I’d told Eva, I knew her magic might be the only way to get a fanatic to talk. I didn’t want to tip my hand too early, though.
“Alright then.” Oliver patted the prisoner’s cheek. “Let’s get to it. You’re a Lycaon extremist under Priest Varge, right?”
“Well, you seem to know everything, don’t you?” the Lycaonian snapped.
Oliver pursed his lips. “This could take a while.”
I sniffed and put my hands on the arms of the chair. The prisoner’s arms were tied behind him and his ankles were tied to the chair legs. He wasn’t a threat to me. I leaned in and stared at him directly in the eyes.
I let my wolf rise to the surface, showing in my eyes and my feral grin. “Oh, I’m sure we can find a way to make him spill his guts....”
The prisoner rolled his eyes. “You don’t scare me, pup!”
“Really? Then why were you so eager to poison yourself and avoid capture? Is it because you Lycaonians are too weak to withstand interrogation and... torture?”
“Torture? You don’t have it in you.”
“Oh, but I do. I captured the princess of the Dark Realm right out from under the king and queen’s noses. I double-crossed pirates to get a great hoard of treasure. There’s not much I won’t do to get what I want.”
The prisoner licked his lips slowly and I heard a slight tremble in his breath.
Good, I was getting to him.
“You might as well kill me.”
I looked at Oliver. He chuckled.
“It sounds to me like you’d rather die than be subject to our interrogation methods. I agree with Rion. That means you’ll spill your guts the moment things get rough.”
“I will not! I’ll never tell you anything!”
“Let’s put that to the test, shall we?” I asked. “Oliver, would you be so kind as to untie one of his arms?”
Oliver complied and held the extremist’s arm flat against the armrest, his hand and fingers hanging over the end.
I smirked and ran my fingers over his. I grabbed his pointer finger and yanked it back. A sickening crack filled the room, followed by the prisoner’s cry of pain.
“How many fingers will it take?” I asked, grabbing onto his middle finger next.
“Do your worst. I’ll die before I tell you anything.”
“Well, that’s just it. Oliver and I can keep you alive as long as we want. Your pain is just beginning, and only once we have what we want will you be allowed to die and join your freak of a master in the afterlife.”
“Don’t you dare--AHHH!”
I snapped his middle finger and moved onto his ring finger, handling it gently until I was ready to break it.
“Y-you d-don’t unders-stand.” He groaned, his eyes rolling back. A shiny film of sweat covered his skin, and he was panting for breath. “If I t-talk, V-varge will do far w-worse to me.”
“Hmm. But Varge isn’t here,” Oliver pointed out, “just us and the remaining hundreds of bones in your body. Once the fingers and toes are gone, what do you think we’ll break next?”
“AHHHH!”
He screamed again as I snapped his ring finger. Out of the corner of my eye, I saw Eva wince. That was one of the reasons I didn’t want her there. I knew she could do far worse when the circumstances called for it, but she’d never done anything like this. All her actions were motivated by self-preservation.
This was different.
“Alright, Alright. I’ll tell you what you want to know. Just... stop.” He sobbed and panted. His shirt was completely soaked through with sweat.
“Tell us everything you know about Varge,” I demanded, still playing with his pinky finger.
“I don’t know anything about him. I wasn’t that high ranking.”
I snapped his pinky and he screamed.
“What the hell was that for?”
“Did I forget to mention that if you lie, I’ll keep going?” I asked.
He whimpered and slouched in the chair as much as he could. His hand and fingers were so swollen it looked like he was wearing a baseball glove.
“Tie that arm back up and loosen the other,” I said to Oliver.
He immediately did as I asked.
“Okay, I’ll talk. Whatever you want to know. I’ll tell you,” the prisoner said, his tone pleading and desperate.
“That’s better. I’ll ask again. Tell us everything you know about Varge.” As I made my demand, I grabbed his intact pointer finger, ready to snap it if I sensed a lie.
“Varge is a true follower of the Dark Lord Lycaon. He’s never been afraid to show his support or act on the Dark Lord’s behalf. But the Church didn’t always approve of his methods. Years ago, he was excommunicated, but other true followers joined with him and helped him continue his work in secret.”
“That’s why Xander and Lena lost track of him. He went into hiding,” I muttered. “Keep going!”
“Varge comes from a strong bloodline of dark power. He decided to use that to his advantage and forced his sister into an arranged mate match to produce children. He wanted someone of his own blood to make stronger, and his sister gave birth to a son and daughter.”
The Lycaonian smirked and glanced at me, then at Eva.
Eva gasped. “You mean, our mother?” She pressed her hand to her heart.
“No, that’s not what he means,” I hissed.
“Of course, it is! Priest Varge is your uncle. He saw a future for his descendants, and the two of you were just the beginning.”
“Liar!” Eva snapped.
I held my hand up to her. As much as I didn’t want to believe this low-life creep, something in his words was familiar. I did have fractured memories of Varge. Was that because he was around when we were young?
“Sadly, your misguided mother decided to finally stick her neck out to protect you two. The bitch almost ruined everything, but Varge intervened. She died trying to get you two out.”
“Did Varge kill her!?” I demanded.
The prisoner didn’t answer right away. I tightened my grip on his pointer finger and growled.
“I don’t know! Honest. There was a large search party for her, and she died in an altercation, but I don’t know by whose hand.”
“Continue,” I snarled.
“Varge took the two of you in out of the goodness of his heart.”
“Unlikely,” I scoffed. “He wanted to use us. You said so yourself.”
“He was planning his revenge against the Lycaon Church for excommunicating him and against everyone that turned their back on the Dark Lord. The two of you were the means... at least, the beginning of it.”
“What the hell does that mean?” Eva asked. She took a step closer, and I saw how pale she was.
She thought this guy was talking about her sons.
“He knew the two of you were his greatest assets at the time, so he had magical experiments performed on you to make you better, stronger.”
“That’s why Hestia had us,” I murmured to myself—and why I only had fractured memories of Varge. He probably only stopped by now and then to check on Hestia’s progress.
“Yes. It was a real shame when she was killed and the two of you were taken in by the King and Queen. Fortunately, when they shipped you off to safety, it gave Varge the perfect opportunity to get you back.”
I snarled and shook my head. “They didn’t know he was a threat, so they didn’t know to protect us against him.”
My stomach sank. All those years I’d blamed Daphne’s parents for what happened to me and Eva—getting separated, our ruined childhoods.
But it was Varge... our uncle. It had always been him.
“He split the two of you up and continued his work. But when that traitorous Alpha cast Eva out of his pack without Varge’s permission, he sent the plague that wiped them out.”
“What!?” Eva covered her mouth. “He can do that?”
The prisoner grinned. “He can do a lot more than that.”
“What about my sons?” she demanded, throwing her arm out to the side. Her fingers crackled with magical electricity.
The extremist fidgeted, as best he could while trapped in the chair.
“They were immune. He knew they’d be the fruits of his experiments and took them with him to fix the mistakes he made with the two of you. They were already part of his bloodline and more powerful because of what he had done to you, Eva.”
“No! He’s experimenting on them, torturing them!?” She shook her head and tears glistened in her eyes.
“Eva, wait outside. I’ll finish this,” I suggested.
“I need to hear this.” She held her hand up, a ball of glowing energy formed in her palm. Even across the room, I could feel how white hot it was. “And then, he’ll suffer!”
I wanted to tell her to stop, but the extremist looked deathly terrified, and I used that.
“Tell us about the twins,” I said.
“Varge noticed that the two of them were powerful with the Dark Lord’s energy. In fact, he believes that one of the twins is the reincarnation of the Dark Lord himself.”
“Which one?” Eva asked before I could.
“He suspects the elder, but we can’t know for sure. All we know is that is that he’s the key to establishing a new world order under the Church’s rule. He has extraordinary power!”
“That’s all I need to hear,” Oliver said. “Eva, Rion, I’ll handle it from here.”
I gave Oliver a grateful nod and grabbed Eva’s wrist, pulling her from the room. I could barely process everything we’d just leaned, but I knew she was on the verge of unleashing her powers. It was a bad idea in a small room like that.
“No, Rion. I’m not letting him out of my sight!” She struggled against my grip.
“Don’t waste your magic on him. He’s not the one we need to focus on. Varge is the monster, Eva. Save all your strength for him but remember... you can’t use too much of your power.”
“I’ll do whatever it takes to save my boys, Rion.”
I nodded my understanding, and we left the room and Eva immediately broke down in sobs. She trembled visibly and I pulled her to me in a hug. I could feel how tense she was, overwhelmed with anger and frustration.
My mind raced with all the new information I had about my past and my family.
“We’ll get him, Eva. He’ll pay for what he did to our mother, to your sons, and to us. I promise.”
“Agreed.”
