Chapter 1201: Chapter 112 : Our First Moon Ball
*Rion*
I couldn’t sit still. It was like every time I stopped moving, I was stabbed with pins and needles, pushing me into action again. It was agonizing, waiting around for our time to act. I had so many questions swimming in my head, and my amnesia made me constantly feel like the answers were just out of reach.
Sighing, I rubbed my hands on my thighs and paced my office.
“You look about as anxious as I feel,” Eva said, popping her head in.
“I know we all agreed to wait until after the Moon Ball, but it seems like years have gone by. I just want to see this through.”
Eva gave a humorless smile and nodded. “I know what you mean.”
“Oh, I’m sorry Eva. I can only imagine what this is like for you...” I went to her and pulled her into a hug.
“I’m not sure how to feel. For two years, I thought my sons were dead. Now I find them alive, and every fiber of my being is telling me to go to them.” She sighed and shook her head.
“We’ll get more information soon. I’ve made all the plans. As soon as the Moon Ball is over, we’ll take off.”
“I know. Thank you, Rion, for... for working so hard to make this happen.”
I laughed wryly and stepped back. “I want nothing more than for you to be reunited with your sons.”
Eva arched an eyebrow. “But?”
“But what?” I walked around the other side of my desk and absently shuffled some papers around.
“Come on, Rion. I know you’re not saying something.” Eva crossed her arms and glared at me.
“It’s just... Varge might know more about where we come from, and I do have questions of my own.”
“Understandable. I will leave him alive long enough to get our answers.”
I nodded. “I’d expect nothing less, given what he’s stolen from you.” I couldn’t imagine losing my own kids for years, thinking they were dead—the pain, the heartbreak. I was surprised Eva hadn’t taken off on her own to find them.
I knew it wasn’t easy for her to wait, but I was glad she was cooperating. We needed strength in numbers to see this through.
The day after the Moon Ball, Eva, Jasper, Daphne, the twins, and I would be leaving Thorn Forest and heading to Valoria. Our official story was that we were visiting allies and taking a vacation to see family in the Drogomor pack. Unofficially, we’d be going after Varge and the Lycaons.
“You haven’t heard anything else yet, from the informant?” Eva’s voice grew soft and timid.
“Not yet, Eva, but you’re the first person I will find when I know something.”
“Thank you.”
“I’ve got a meeting with Alma and Terrance,” I said. “Don’t worry, Eva. I’m not going to cut you out of this.”
She nodded and slowly left my office, glancing back at me a few times.
Alma and Terance arrived shortly after Eva departed. I already hinted that I’d be leaving, but now that the final arrangements were made, I had to make sure the pack was in good hands.
“Alpha, what can we do for you?” Alma asked.
I motioned to chairs across from my desk. “Sit, please. As I’m sure you’ve heard, my family and I are taking a little vacation after the Moon Ball.”
“We heard the rumors,” Terance agreed.
“Well, they are true. As you can imagine, that puts the pack in a peculiar spot. Jasper, being my sister’s companion, will be joining our family vacation. Both Alpha and Beta will be gone for some time.”
“What would you like us to do about it?” Alma asked.
They both looked at me with wide, expectant eyes. I had a feeling they already knew why I was meeting with them.
“I need to leave Thorn Forest in the hands of people I trust and who I know will have the pack’s best interests at heart. Do you think the two of you could handle that?”
They exchanged a look and both nodded.
“Yes, Alpha. We won’t let you down,” Terance assured me. He stood up and shook my hand.
“The pack is in good hands. We’ll take good care of everyone,” Alma agreed.
“Thank you.”

The entire pack was excited for the Moon Ball, and that excitement was contagious. I saw to some of the last-minute preparations while Daphne took her time to get ready.
Not that she needed the extra time to look beautiful—she always looked great.
A commotion outside caught my attention.
“What now?” I groaned. Nothing could go wrong today.
It had been weeks since there were any fights within the pack, but from the sounds of it, something big was going on.
I rushed outside and saw a small, private plane coming in for a landing in a nearby field.
“Who the hell could that be?” I asked aloud.
Some of the closest pack members around me buzzed with excitement. A private plane meant money and status. I heard murmurs of curiosity as they discussed who might be coming.
It took a while for the plane to land and the passengers to make their way to the mansion. I didn’t recognize them, but there was one older man and one younger. They had similar features, and I suspected it was a father and son.
The older one walked right up to me and held out his hand. I shook it.
“Alpha Rion, good to see you. I hope we’re not crashing the party.” He grinned. “This is my son, Isaac.”
I recognized the name and knew who he was now. “Ah, Alpha Oliver, thank you for coming. I don’t recall sending an invitation....”
Oliver smirked and nodded. “Well, we thought we’d stop by and offer you and your family a lift back to Drogomor tomorrow. It will make travel much easier for Daphne and the girls.”
“It’s much appreciated. That party is about to get started.”
I led Oliver and his son inside. The rest of the pack members continue to whisper amongst themselves. It was unusual for us to have such a high-profile visitor.
I brought Oliver and Isaac to a private room where they could change out of their travel clothes. They had brought their suits for the party and everything. I got ready with them, slicking my hair back in the mirror.
“So, what’s on the agenda tonight?” Oliver asked.
I met his eyes through the mirror, and he grinned.
“You’ll have to wait and see. Daphne and Eva planned the whole thing, and I have no idea what to expect. The two of them wanted to be in charge.”
“Good man, letting the women take control.”
“You seem awfully cheerful... given what we will face when we return to Drogomor.”
“Ah, that’s tomorrow’s problem. Today, we party.” Oliver put his arm around his son’s shoulders and jostled him slightly.
Isaac smiled and pushed his father away. “I heard there are going to be a lot of women my age here.”
“Yes, that’s the plan. I think the two of you will have a lot of fun tonight.”
“Honestly, Rion, I’ve faced worse in my lifetime than some Lycaon extremists,” Oliver admitted with a casual shrug.
I pulled my suit coat on and checked the buttons on my dress shirt. My suit was fitted and sleek. I hadn’t been dressed up like this since my wedding, and I barely remembered that.
“I don’t know. Priest Varge seems to be serious business. He’s stayed hidden for decades, and the fact he’s emerging now can’t be a good thing.”
Oliver nodded. “It’s likely he has a bigger plan. I don’t want you to think my flippancy means I don’t take this seriously. Lycaon fanatics aren’t high up there on the threat list in my book, not when I’ve seen magic that can alter time and move people through different realms and realities.”
“Huh?” My mouth fell open. “That’s a thing?”
“Like I said, Lycaon extremists aren’t at the top of my list.”
“We should still be wary. It isn’t just the fact that Varge has stayed so well hidden or that he kidnapped Eva’s sons. There’s something else.” I rubbed my temples and closed my eyes.
“Your memory still hasn’t come back, has it?” Oliver stepped closer to me and put a hand on my shoulder.
I shook my head. “Bits and pieces here and there. More of my recent memories have returned than older memories. When I saw his picture and heard his name, I just... had a feeling. It’s fuzzy but it... I just get the sense that this guy is bad news, more so than he seems.”
“Do you think if you got your memories back, you could figure out what that feeling means?”
I looked up at Oliver. He had compassion in his eyes. It made me wonder if he’d ever experienced some kind of memory loss.
“I think so. I’d like to know everything possible about Varge before we face him. If there’s something in my memories that could help....”
Oliver smiled warmly. “Well, you’re in luck.” He clapped my shoulder. “There is a healer in Drogomor who might be able to help.”
“Really?” I perked up. “I called around, but the healers in the big cities all say the same thing—they’ll come back on their own... or they won’t.”
“I can’t promise you anything, Rion, but she can do things that you wouldn’t normally have access to through the standard medical profession. If anyone can help, she can.”
“Then I’d like to see her, if possible.”
Oliver nodded. “I’ll call and make an appointment for you for when we arrive. If Varge is as bad as you say, I don’t want to go in blind, either.”
“Thank you. I will take whatever help I can get.”
My heart lifted at the imminent prospect of memory recovery. There was more I wanted to know about Varge, but it would also make me feel more like myself. I hated having huge gaps in my memory.
Oliver, Isaac, and I went to the main room where the Moon Ball was being held. All the furniture was cleared away and there was a big open space for dancing. Most of the younger pack members were already there, mingling.
Isaac went to a group of shifters his age and immediately jumped in. He was brave.
Oliver mingled and I chatted with guests as they arrived. This was a happy occasion, but I couldn’t help feeling like it was misplaced. I wondered if we should really be celebrating when there was a threat like Varge out there.
The doors opened and Daphne and Eva walked in together. Eva wore a floor-length, fitted, black gown with a swooping neck, low back, and spaghetti straps. Daphne’s hair was pinned up and she had fresh flowers from the garden woven into her curls.
She wore a champagne colored, empire waist dress. I could just barely make out her belly underneath. She glowed with a bright smile and a warm aura surrounded her. She was absolutely glowing.
The moment I saw her, my mind went blank, and all my worries melted away.
She was the only thing I saw, the only thing on my mind.
