Chapter 1195: Chapter 106 : Could It Be Possible?

*Daphne*

News of Rion’s victory reached the pack before he and Eva returned with our warriors. I got a detailed report of the battle, including the injuries that Eva had sustained. My heart went out to her and the other warriors, and I wished there was something I could do for them.

As I thought about it, I imagined that after such an intense battle between our warriors, the pack would appreciate hosting our first official Moon Ball. We were beyond blessed to still be alive and to be in a time of peace. It was only right that we had a grand celebration.

I heaved myself out of bed with difficulty, flinching slightly as I stood up straight. I was tired of being on bed rest. As the severity of my pregnancy symptoms eased up, I began itching to do something, anything really.

I dressed as quickly as I could in a simple blue gown that flowed around my knees, tied my long brown tresses back with a matching ribbon, and then stepped out of my bedroom.

It was true that I considered myself the Luna of this pack, but before that, I was a mother to my beautiful children. I tended to my children, getting the girls ready for the day, making sure they were dressed, fed, and then occupied with their toys. I smiled softly and smoothed out their hair tenderly as they played with the stuffed toys.

When the pack babysitter arrived to watch over Ayla and Selene, I made my way into the office to get started on plans for the Moon Ball. I was already envisioning a beautiful setup with lights and elegant tablecloths.

I got to work on listing supplies we would need for the event before I got started on the invitations. This wouldn’t just be a pack affair. We needed to invite all our current allies in order to maintain the positive ties we had with them.

I was just sealing the first invitation when a knock sounded at the door. I furrowed my eyebrows, not expecting anyone. I cautiously opened the door and my eyes widened at the woman standing there.

“Anais,” I said, opening the door fully.

Anais nodded. “Hello, Luna Daphne,” she said before biting her lip. “May I have a moment of your time?”

“Of course,” I said at once, stepping aside so she could enter. I gestured for her to come inside, and she did so with a polite smile.

I gave the young woman a quick once-over as I shut the door. I was amazed by how much healthier and vibrant she seemed. It had only been a few months or so but now, her cheeks had a healthy pink hue to them, and her eyes and hair were shiny. She seemed to have gained some much-needed weight as well, her face not as sunken in as before.

“You look well,” I couldn’t help but comment as I led her to the sitting room and into a plush armchair. I set some tea and light snacks on the small table between us.

“I am doing well,” she said with a light blush. She sipped at her tea. “And I have you to thank for that. I can’t express my gratitude for all you’ve done for me and for my son.”

“He is doing very well,” I told her, smiling brightly as I thought of the little boy who looked so much like his mother. “He’s becoming a lot more vocal now. I wouldn’t be surprised if he said his first word soon.”

Anais beamed at the news and then leaned forward. “I’ve found work in a nearby pack,” she announced. “I’m ready to take my son with me so that we can finally start our new life together.”

I had gathered as much, but it was still an emotional moment as I looked at the young woman in front of me. I saw so much of myself in her, the determination that she had to keep her son safe.

“I’m so happy for you both,” I told her sincerely. “I wish you nothing but the best. If you ever find yourself needing anything at all, you are always welcome here.”

With the most emotion I’d ever seen from her, Anais stood up and wrapped her arms around me, murmuring her thanks over and over as she sobbed.

Days passed and I continued to bury myself in plans for the Moon Ball. Invitations had been sent out and there was still much to be done.

I was overseeing work on the center plaza, where we would be holding the event. Permanent metal fixtures were being installed where we would be able to hang twinkling lights for all our future events.

Rion was currently away. Ever since the battle with Gareth, he had been putting even more effort into making allies nearby. I understood the need to do so, but it felt like we had just barely started to breathe a little bit before he took off with great urgency.

I was touched at the same time. Even though he didn’t remember me completely, he was still determined to ensure the safety of me and our children.

Still, each time he left, I was reminded of the painful days I spent caring for our pack and children without him, back when he was stuck at the hospital in Breles. I wondered if it was because there was still a rift between us due to Rion’s incomplete memories of our life together. Now, when we were apart physically, that emotional separation felt even more prevalent.

I hated it.

I felt someone approaching then and turned to see Jasper striding purposefully toward me. I felt my shoulders sag slightly at the serious look on his face.

“I know that look,” I said when he approached. “What’s going on now?”

Jasper and I bonded quite a bit while Rion and Eva were in Breles. He became like an older brother figure to me, something that I had never had before.

It was easy to see why Rion named him Beta as soon as his best friend arrived in Thorn Forest. Jasper was dependable and loyal. He looked after me and the girls while Rion was away. I wasn’t sure if I would have been able to survive without Jasper there to comfort me and support me through the trials we faced without Rion.

Jasper gave me a look of understanding before frowning at me. “We should probably talk in private, Daphne.”

That did nothing to calm my already rising anxiety, but I followed him toward our newest building, which we were using for pack affairs. We were calling it the Great Hall. It had a large assembly room where we would have the entire pack gather when we had important announcements to give. There were also smaller rooms inside the grand building for smaller meetings with our main Council of Leaders.

“Is this about Lycaon,” I asked once Jasper had shut us into one of the side rooms. It was then that I noticed that he had a thick folder tucked under his arm.

He nodded grimly, opening the envelope, and dumping its contents out on the wooden desk that was in the middle of the room.

I peered down at the papers, which consisted mainly of reports from our investigative team who were currently chasing after the Lycaon extremists. Jasper let me look over them and I realized with resignation that there wasn’t that much to them.

There was some suspicious activity in other pack lands. There were a couple of new suspects who had not been confirmed to be part of the group. Most of the reports included a note that said something along the lines of more information needed to be gathered.

I froze at a smaller piece of paper beneath all the reports. It was a picture with notes attached that claimed this man to be the leader of the group. I sucked in a breath at the familiar rugged jawline and shape of the man’s eyes.

He looked very similar to Rion.

I sifted through the other pages again as Jasper watched on with intensity. There was nothing about this man, not even a name.

“What do we know about this man?” I asked Jasper, holding up the picture.

Jasper shook his head. “He is a shifter and is thought to be the leader of the Lycaon extremists,” he said in a low voice. “That is all the team could uncover at this time.”

I gritted my teeth as my heart thundered in my chest. “Do whatever it takes to get all the information possible about him.”

As soon as Jasper and I ended our little impromptu meeting, I rushed back home, feeling shaken up by the information our Beta had just given me.

Who was that man who looked so much like Rion?

I decided to go find Eva, hopeful that she might have the answer. Luckily, she was at the mansion, watching our girls as she liked to do most afternoons.

I was mildly confused after searching the house to find it empty. I wandered into our garden, which was inspired by the one back at the Crimson Palace, complete with a rose garden and thick hedges that formed mazes. I relaxed immediately upon entering the beautiful area when I heard the unmistakable sound of my daughters giggling.

Eva was laughing too, but her voice became low and encouraging a moment later. “That’s perfect, Selene. I’m so proud of you!”

I furrowed my eyebrows as I turned the corner into a little clearing surrounded by flowering hedges. A hand flew to my mouth as I watched Selene shut her big gray eyes, a little wrinkle forming between her light eyebrows. In front of her, a crayon was floating a couple of feet off the ground.

I tried to tiptoe around the scene so I could sit beside Eva. I didn’t want to distract Selene. Unfortunately, little Ayla spotted me and cried out excitedly, causing Selene to look over, the crayon falling to the ground with a tiny clack.

The two rushed toward me, their little hands outstretched as they giggled happily. I scooped them both up in my arms, which was starting to become more difficult as they continued to grow.

Eva stood from her spot on a nearby bench and grinned at me excitedly. “Did you see what Selene just did?”

Selene grinned at the sound of her name and looked up at me expectantly. I grinned widely at her. “That was amazing, Sweetheart. I’m so proud of you!”

Selene beamed at me, and I gave her a kiss on the cheek in turn.

“Can too, Mama!” Ayla squeaked, pouting up at me.

I smiled gently at her. “You can do that too, Ayla?” I asked, bouncing them both a bit, causing them to clap and laugh. I couldn’t help but join in at the innocent sound.

“She can,” Eva confirmed with a nod. “She actually lifted two crayons at once just before you got here.”

“I’m very proud of you, Ayla,” I said, giving the little girl a kiss on the cheek as well.

The twins struggled in my hold then, eager to continue their lesson now that I was here to watch. Eva laughed and agreed to carry on so I could watch the girls.

I was so impressed by how quickly Eva was able to teach them to control their simple telekinesis, but I couldn’t help but mostly watch my sister-in-law as she guided the girls.

I studied Eva, my eyes sweeping over the shape of her jaw and eyes. I realized with astonishment that there was some resemblance to the Lycaon leader in Eva’s face as well. I couldn’t pinpoint what it was exactly—maybe something in the shape of her eyebrows, or her cheekbones.

I decided I should get more information before revealing this possibility to Rion and Eva.

Was it possible that it was Rion and Eva’s father behind the attempted kidnapping of our daughters?
