Chapter 1183: Chapter 94 : Wishes Beneath the Surface
*Rion*
I gazed at my little family fondly as we arrived at the festival. Ayla and Selene were dressed in matching purple dresses with tiny silver-colored stars on them. Their wavy light brown hair, which was so much like Daphne’s, was pinned back away from their round faces with dainty bows.
I thought that we were just slightly overdressed, but Daphne pointed out that this was a momentous occasion so we should dress nicely. She did make it a point to put our daughters in lightweight dresses that would allow them to play and toddle more comfortably.
I smiled at my wife and put an arm around her waist. She was stunning in her deep blue dress that flowed out from her waist. Her long light brown hair was pulled back into a high ponytail, which I tugged on teasingly throughout the day.
The market square was beautiful, and it was obvious that it was going to be the most frequented spot in our community, which I was sure was Daphne’s intention. It took a lot of labor and preparation to get it just the way my wife envisioned.
There was a stone walkway down the center of the shopping booths and colorful awnings above each little shop. There was a huge communal area filled with tables and an intricate fountain that was embedded with moon and star sculptures. Quite a few old, dilapidated buildings had been removed in order to make room for a play area for the children of our pack, with games and a play structure they could climb on.
As soon as we made it to the communal area, we were greeted by boisterous applause. Daphne stepped closer to me, her cheeks tinted pink, but she smiled widely and waved at our pack members in thanks.
Despite all the praise and applause she had had since we became Alpha and Luna, Daphne still wasn’t completely used to all the overwhelming attention. I smirked slightly, finding it adorable when she blushed.
I lifted Ayla up onto my shoulders, holding onto her chubby legs while she grabbed onto my hair with two big fistfuls. I winced slightly at the pain in my scalp, causing both Daphne and Selene, who was in her mother’s arms, to giggle madly.
We were greeted by nearly every member of our pack before we were able to enjoy all the festivities. Daphne and I danced with our daughters to the band that was playing some joyful, upbeat tunes.
Eva was kind enough to take her nieces to the play area while Daphne and I enjoyed some grilled meats and fruit that were being served courtesy of some of the skilled shopkeepers.
About an hour later, we went to collect the girls from Eva, but she and Jasper seemed to be having a good time playing with them. Selene was clinging tightly to Jasper, who was bouncing her up and down.
“Let us watch them today, Alpha,” Jasper said to me with a wink. “I’m sure you two could use a break from parenting just for tonight.”
Daphne and I looked at Eva, who was holding Ayla’s hand as the little girl explored the little bridge on the play wooden play structure that I had helped build a few weeks earlier.
Daphne looked uncertain, but I looped an arm around her waist. “Let’s go enjoy the festival, love. Jasper and Eva can watch the girls for a couple of hours.”
Daphne glanced at our daughters one more time before looking up into my eyes. Her lips parted slightly, her gorgeous hazel eyes glazing over slightly and I knew I had charmed her enough to agree. Sure enough, she nodded and I tugged her away.
The sun was just beginning to set. We knew we would probably need to get the girls home right after the fireworks show so that we could get them ready for bed, but just then, I intended to focus on Daphne.
Lately, we had been so buried in our busy lives as leaders and as parents to our girls, that time with just one another was becoming rare. I was going to make up for some of that lost time tonight.
I tugged Daphne over to an alluring booth that I had spotted when we first got to the market square. One of the shopkeepers had set up a wishing lantern station. Daphne’s eyes lit up when she saw it.
With our lantern in hand, we headed for a nearby hill. The sky was a breathtaking royal blue since the sun had just set over the horizon. When we got to the peak, Daphne turned to face me, her hands firm on the bottom of our lantern. The little flame inside flickered brightly, illuminating the smooth planes of her face.
“Let’s let the lantern go together,” Daphne said earnestly, grinning widely at me.
I kissed the tip of her nose and grabbed onto one side of the lantern. We stood side by side, our hips touching before we let the glowing lantern go. The wind caused it to shake slightly, but it quickly took flight and soared off into the night sky above us.
“You made a pretty boring wish,” I quipped teasingly.
Daphne looked up at me and narrowed her eyes. “How is wishing for the health and happiness of my husband and daughters boring?”
I rolled my eyes, preparing to answer smartly when a low boom sounded above us. Daphne looked up, her eyes widening as the fireworks show started. For a moment, I was much more mesmerized by the way the colorful lights were reflected in my wife’s hazel eyes. The way her eyes glimmered seemed even more breathtaking than the balls of light in the sky.
Daphne turned and her jaw dropped slightly as her eyes focused on me. “Rion! You’re missing the fireworks!”
I just smirked at her and grabbed her face in my hands, pulling her close so I could kiss her.
I was just deepening the kiss, Daphne’s hands going up to my hair, when several shrieks pierced through the air, causing us to jump apart immediately. We had a good view of the rest of the festival and could see our members scurrying like frightened mice.
Daphne and I wordlessly broke into a sprint toward the chaos.
We spotted Eva first, activating her powers to protect a large number of pack members. A purple shadow glowed around her as she faced off against a pack of rogue wolves.
Eva spotted us, her gray eyes widening. “Church of Lycaon,” she shrieked before spinning around to fend off another shifter that snapped at her.
Daphne cried out in alarm and I gritted my teeth, my eyes scanning the area for our babies. “Where are they?” I snarled.
“Jasper has them!” Eva yelled over the battle.
While I didn’t want to leave my little sister to fend off the band of shifters without me, I knew she would be fine.
Daphne and I dashed off in search of our daughters.
It didn’t take long. Right on the edge of our community, Jasper was in wolf form and was hunched over our babies, his teeth bared and golden eyes flashing viciously.
Daphne and I sprinted but just weren’t fast enough. We watched helplessly as several wolves attacked Jasper, leaving our girls defenseless. Our babies were then snatched up by cloaked figures, who jumped up onto large rogues. The kidnappers tore off into the forest. I felt my body tremble furiously before I too shifted into my wolf form, Daphne following suit.
I was only vaguely aware of Jasper and several other of our shifter and vampire warriors following closely behind Daphne and me, my focus on the insanely quick rogues that tore through the forest. My heart thudded painfully in my chest as I listened to the frightened cries of Ayla and Selene.
Those bastards weren’t going to get away with this.
This was one of the many instances when I was eternally grateful for the super strength and speed that came with being a shifter. My body glided past the dark trees and leaped over obstacles effortlessly as I slowly but surely gained on the kidnappers.
I snarled ferociously as the kidnappers dove into a river, taking my babies right along with them. My heart flew right into my throat as I saw their little heads disappear beneath the dark surface of the water. Every fiber in me shook with rage, but that anger also propelled me even more quickly forward and I dove in after them.
As a human, it would have been difficult to see underwater, but my vision was vastly superior in this form. I searched the depths and found a dark shadow holding Ayla and Selene tightly in their grasp.
I narrowed my eyes and shot forward, biting the neck of the kidnapper, who immediately let go of the girls, a stream of blood rising up from his neck. I gave the shadow a swift kick with my powerful hind legs, causing a cloud of blood to surround the figure. I spun underwater and snatched my daughters up carefully, taking the backs of their dresses between my teeth.
My heart pounded furiously as I took in their still forms, noting the way their heads hung limply to the side as I swam toward the surface. The fear I felt from losing them just drove me forward even faster. My lungs were starting to tighten from being underwater, so I couldn’t even imagine how their tiny lungs were doing.
We burst through the surface violently. Before I could even gather my bearings, Daphne was in front of us, taking Ayla and Selene’s limp forms in her arms. She was sobbing loudly, thanking the Goddess that I had found them.
I peered through the water in my eyes as Daphne fell to her knees in the shallow water, holding both children on her lap. Some of our guards were rushing toward her, ready to help. One draped a jacket around her bare shoulders but my wife barely noticed, her full attention on our children.
I watched anxiously as Daphne pushed against their tiny chests, trying to bring the water up and out of their little bodies. Selene’s still form suddenly trembled as she coughed hard, water spilling from her mouth. Ayla followed soon after, coughing up river water as well. Their wide gray eyes popped open and they began to cry.
Daphne thanked the Goddess a couple dozen more times as she hugged the girls fiercely.
I slumped in relief and shifted back into my human form. A guard nearby was ready with a large jacket that went down to my knees. I nodded in thanks, but my eyes were on my family as I shrugged the garment on and started toward them. I longed to hold them close, my head a bit dizzy from how close we had come to losing our precious daughters.
Daphne looked up and smiled widely at me, her arms reaching past our girls and toward me. I grinned too, my relief most likely mirrored in hers. I tilted my head questioningly when my wife’s eyes suddenly rounded in horror and she screamed my name.
At that exact moment, I felt a large dark presence behind me and before I could fully turn around to face it, I was grabbed roughly from behind and dragged back down beneath the surface.
