Chapter 1151: Chapter 62 : Raining Shards of Glass
*Rion*
“I’m here to collect, Rion,” Katheryn spat at me. “Hand over my payment for risking my life to help you save your crazy sister. Pay up, or I’ll shoot out your legs and take them instead.”
“Katheryn,” I said as calmly as I could, tugging at the ropes that were wrapped around my body. “Put the gun away and untie me. I can pay you what you are owed, plus interest.”
I could tell from the way that she tilted her chin up that she was skeptical. She seemed to read my expression for a long moment.
“If you put a single bullet in him, you will pay dearly for it,” Jasper promised in a low voice. “You are completely surrounded. Do as he says.”
Katheryn looked around. It was true. There were at least a half dozen of my men surrounding her, waiting for her to make the wrong move so they could take the gun from her.
“Stand down,” I snapped at the guys. “She deserves to get her payment. She and I had a deal and she upheld her part of the bargain.”
The guys obeyed, taking a step away from Katheryn and me.
This seemed to be the move that Katheryn needed in order to believe me. She still looked hesitant and hadn’t moved the gun away from me yet. “I’m trusting you, Stormfall,” she said between her teeth.
I nodded in understanding. “You won’t regret it.”
I almost let out a huge sigh of relief when she untied me.
“You better hope not.”
Katheryn followed me to my apartment into the room where we had hidden the sacks of treasure.
I took out a couple of handfuls, brought them back out to the main room, and dumped them into Katheryn’s hands. She stared at them wide-eyed. It was worth just over three times the amount she had initially been promised for helping me save Eva.
“I’m about to leave on another mission,” I told her. “Join me in saving the Crimson princess from a shifter pack she was taken to and there will be much more where that came from.”
Katheryn pursed her thin lips, staring down at the gold in her hands, then up at me, and then back down at her hands. Finally, she deposited the coins into the pack she had slung over her shoulder before stepping back and shaking her head. “As tempting as the offer sounds, I think I’ll pass this time, but thanks for the invite.”
I nodded in understanding. I didn’t particularly like Katheryn, but I obviously couldn’t push her to join me on a potentially life-threatening mission. “I am grateful for the work you’ve done for me,” I said anyway, feeling as if I should despite the fact that she was going to put a few bullets through me without a second thought.
She nodded, one corner of her mouth going up. “Pleasure doing business with you, Rion.”
After confirming that Eva was safely out of Egoren and tucked away, I knew I had to act quickly to rescue Daphne. I met with Jasper to discuss our plan.
"We need to figure out who took Daphne and where she’s being held," I said.
Jasper nodded. "I’ll put out some feelers and see what information I can dig up."
A few hours later, Jasper returned with news. "I’ve learned that Daphne was taken by a shifter named Gareth, the Alpha of the Trulien pack located in the eastern mountains of the Light Realm. The Trulien pack has a reputation for aggression and trying to take over territory.”
"We’ll need to move fast," I said. "That big ship will be too slow. Let’s take smaller speedboats from the port in Erogen through the Southern Pass. We can hire cars once we land to take us into the mountains and then go armed on foot the rest of the way."

When we arrived in the Light Realm, we rented vehicles and drove to the Crimson Creek pack to get more supplies and information.
Alpha Cyrus greeted us. The aging Alpha knew of Gareth’s plans to take over the Light Realm.
"Be cautious," Cyrus warned. "Gareth is ruthless. But I can provide guides to take you close using old train tracks through the mountains."
With Cyrus’ help, we were able to make our way armed and on foot to the edge of Trulien territory. So much time had passed, and it seemed to take too long before the lights of the Trulien pack came into view.
I hoped we weren’t too late to save Daphne and our unborn child.
I gave Jasper the signal and he gave the first orders. I waited anxiously until he put a hand on my shoulder. “The guards on the east side have all been taken out,” he announced.
I nodded, taking a deep breath in. We crouched together side by side right outside the gate.
Somehow, I could feel that Daphne and our unborn child were close.
“Let’s go,” I intoned, moving forward, but remaining crouched.
Jasper and a couple of other members of our crew followed closely behind me. There were just a couple of guards on our side. We easily scaled the metal bars, moving as silently as the wind and we leaped over the top, landing on the other side.
I sprinted toward the first guard in front of me. He saw me briefly before I swung my elbow right into the side of his neck, knocking him out immediately.
I looked up to find a few more guards sprawled out over the grass. I nodded to Jasper and the others, and we started to move along the perimeter of the community. If all went well, we would break into the mansion to bust Daphne out and leave without anyone knowing.
I was hopeful, but somehow, I had a feeling that that just wouldn’t be the case.
It was the middle of the night and thankfully, it seemed like the community was mostly asleep. I would have hated to knock out some innocent bystanders if it could be avoided.
I found that I was willing to do anything for Daphne and for our child.
I tried to focus on the task at hand as we hurried along the gate. We were almost to the mansion now, and I was already anticipating it to be heavily guarded. Half of our crew was attacking from the east side while we approached from the west. Hopefully, we would be able to take out all of the guards before we broke into the building.
Jasper and I glanced at each other in surprise when we got to the mansion and didn’t see a single guard. We did a quick lap around, searching for a good entry point. One of my men reported seeing the very top of what looked like a skylight that would allow access to the second story.
That was likely where Daphne was, so we made our way to the back of the mansion and began to climb up the side. It was tricky since the material of the building was slick, but there were enough facade fixtures like balconies and piping that allowed us to make our way up.
We moved stealthily along the roof, knowing that our steps would likely be heard if we weren’t careful.
“What’s the plan?” Jasper hissed at me as we approached the large glass skylight and peered inside. It led into some kind of large recreational room with hardwood floors and intricate artwork on the walls.
That’s when I spotted Daphne, looking small as the Alpha approached her. I felt my eyes narrow with fury as he reached a hand out toward her, a look of longing in his eyes.
“Rion,” Jasper snapped in a low voice. “Focus. We need a plan.”
I almost turned and snapped back that the current plan was to kill the bastard when we were suddenly attacked on all sides by several guards. Jasper swept a leg out, causing one to crash against the roof. I stared down back through the skylight and saw them both look up before the Alpha grabbed Daphne’s arm roughly, clearly about to pull her out of the room.
That’s when I jumped through the skylight, shoving my feet hard into the glass, shattering it instantly and falling through into the large room.
Daphne screamed my name just as I straightened and stared through the glass that was still falling from the ceiling. I just narrowly dodged the fist that was flying toward my face. I lunged forward, slamming into him with my shoulder. He was a big guy, but he still went stumbling back.
“I’m here to take Princess Daphne home,” I said, straightening as some glass fell out of my hair.
“I’m afraid that just simply isn’t going to be possible,” the Alpha said with a dark chuckle. “I’m sorry, but you won’t be taking my fiancee anywhere.”
A growl fell from my mouth as I stepped forward threateningly. “I’m warning you, Alpha,” I said in a mocking tone. “I suggest you let the princess go. She has no intention of marrying you.”
I glanced quickly at Daphne, who was staring at us with wide eyes. We could hear the scuffle above us as well. She turned to the Alpha and I saw red when she put a hand on his arm. “Gareth, please,” she said. “Don’t hurt him. I’m sure it’s just a misunderstanding from my parents.”
Gareth saw through her easily, narrowing his eyes at her and grabbing her roughly by the arm, causing her to yelp as he pushed her behind him. “Shut up and stay out of the way.”
I lost the last sliver of calm that was in me when Daphne cried out in pain. I dove at Alpha Gareth, throwing a fist right for his face, which he cleanly dodged before he wrapped his arm around my neck, putting me into a chokehold.
I struggled for a brief moment before throwing my heel back sharply into his gut. I swung my arm around, nailing him in the side of the head. He stumbled and I stood towering over him. I made the mistake of glancing over at Daphne for a brief moment when I heard her cry out in distress over the brawl.
It was just the millisecond Gareth needed to sweep my feet out from under me with his boot. In the next moment, Gareth shifted into his wolf form.
I was barely able to roll out from under him and dash several feet away so that I could do the same, relishing briefly in the familiar burst of strength and power that filled me each time I shifted.
Gareth and I immediately charged at one another, colliding full force into a large mass of teeth, claws, and fur. We were evenly matched, I was disappointed to find. I had to dodge several times to keep from getting cut by the large wolf.
I couldn’t breathe or move as Gareth’s large teeth closed around my throat. Everything hurt, and I could only barely hear Daphne’s desperate cry as black dots began to appear in my vision.
A loud crash sounded through the space and a huge gust of wind howled ferociously. Gareth’s teeth disappeared from my throat and I sat up just in time to see Eva, her hands extended and her expression livid as she stalked toward Gareth, who was now floating several feet off of the ground, his paws clawing at an invisible force that was currently sucking the life out of him.
Daphne hurried to my side and I stood and stepped protectively in front of her, but my eyes were still on my sister.
Eva just stared on with wide, frightening eyes. Her whole body was shaking violently, her teeth clenched so hard that I wouldn’t have been shocked if tiny cracks started to appear in them. After another moment, she seemed to calm down and snap out of her rage, her eyes rounding as she slowly lowered her arms.
Gareth fell into a crumpled form on the hard floor. He was disturbingly still. We looked around at the guards that lay in heaps on the floor as well.
I quickly shifted back into my human form. Jasper had already grabbed some pants off of one of the guards and tossed them to me. I nodded to him gratefully, pulling the dark material on.
Jasper led the way, followed by Eva as I hurriedly grabbed Daphne’s hand heading toward the door leading out of the room.
We and the crew stepped over the unconscious guards before we shoved the main gate open and disappeared through the trees of the forest beyond.
