Chapter 1147: Chapter 58 : Trust No One

*Daphne*

I expected my parents, especially my father, to be frustrated and angry. I prepared myself for them to tell me that going after Rion was too dangerous and that staying safe in Alpha Gareth’s pack for the time being was best.

But they didn’t. They both held their arms out to me, and I fell into their arms. They held me tight for a long time.

“I’m glad you told us,” Father said.

“You’re not angry?” I asked as I pulled back.

Mother shook her head. “This isn’t the choice we would have made for you. All we want is for you to be safe and happy, Daphne. You have to know by now that nothing but danger surrounds Rion and his sister Eva. Especially Eva, who wanted you dead.”

“I know.” I hesitated for a moment and said, “But, Rion is in trouble and Eva lost her powers.”

I began to cry as I was finally able to tell them the whole truth about Kyle and Carissa, the grimoire and Hestia’s treasure.

They looked at each other with grave concern.

“There is a lot that you just revealed, Daphne,” Father said, letting out a heavy sigh.

“Why didn’t you tell us all of this as soon as Captain Kyle left?” Mother looked stricken and hurt.

I lowered my head. “You’re right. I should have told you everything sooner. But, everything was so messy I thought... I don’t know....”

“You said Carissa was able to dampen Eva’s powers and she used a potion that put Rion in a coma... Do you think it’s the same kind of coma that Rhys is in?” My mother asked.

I shook my head. “I think it might be. She claimed to have an antidote.”

Mother and Father looked at each other again.

“In that case we certainly want to have a word with her,” my father said. We will send royal guards with you to help you save Rion and bring Carissa back to the palace.”

“What about Captain Kyle and Eva..?”

“Captain Kyle brought you back safely. He is no concern. But Eva–even if she has no powers now, she still has to face up to her crimes. She tried to kill you, Daphne. It is best if the Royal Guard warriors can capture her before she regains her powers,” Mother insisted.

I wanted to argue on her behalf, but I realized it was already too much for them to lend help to save Rion. Eva could be discussed later.

“Thank you for helping me,” I whispered.

“Daphne, of course we want to help you, but there is a long way to go for us to rebuild trust between us.”

“You’re right... I understand.”

Alpha Gareth had been standing back watching. But he stepped forward and cleared his throat.

“Your Majesties, I was happy to be of service to the palace as a stand-in fiance in order to keep Daphne safe. Now, it would be an honor to be of further assistance. Please allow me and my men to escort Daphne in her mission,” he said.

I looked up at him in surprise, wondering why he was so eager to help. I was on the verge of shaking my head when my father answered.

“Your continued help and discretion is greatly appreciated. Of course the palace will compensate you.”

“That is not necessary.”

“Thank you once again for your assistance, Alpha Gareth,” my mother responded. “Please keep our daughter safe.”

“Of course.” Alpha Gareth nodded, his eyes raking over me before locking his gaze with my own. “We can leave tomorrow.”

I could not shake the feeling that this Alpha wanted something more than he let on. But I figured with the Royal Guard surrounding us, there was little to worry about from him.

The next morning I woke before dawn with a pit in my stomach, an uneasy feeling I couldn’t shake.

Gareth had insisted we leave as early as possible to get to the royal ship that would track down Captain Kyle and Carissa. The palace was still dark as I dressed and gathered my things. I met Gareth and the Royal Guard members in the motor pool. My parents came down to see me off, worry etched on their faces.

"Please be very careful and stay safe, my darling. Let Alpha Gareth and the Royal Guard rescue Rion and apprehend Eva and Carissa," Mother instructed, pulling me in for a fierce hug.

Father echoed her sentiments, making Gareth promise yet again to protect me.

“I will keep her close and keep her safe,” he assured them.

We loaded into the SUVs and set off, the engines rumbling as we drove through the sleeping city toward the docks. I rode in the lead vehicle with Gareth while the guards followed behind. A short distance after we passed the palace gates, Gareth called for us to pull over.

"Let’s stop for a quick bite before we get to the docks," he suggested, hopping out of the driver’s seat.

I was a little annoyed since he’d insisted on leaving so early only to stop. We could have gotten food from the palace. I shook off my annoyance as we approached the edge of a village market that was just starting to wake up as vendors opened their stalls.

The guards spread out to grab food and drinks.

“You’ll want to wait here. I’ll bring something back for you,” Gareth offered.

“I’m not hungry yet. I can wait till we board the ship.”

He shrugged and nodded. I stayed by the SUV, watching Gareth warily as he chatted with a fruit seller.

He returned with his arms full of goods, handing me a bottle of water. "Drink up, Princess. It’s going to be a long drive ahead."

I took a small sip, the cool liquid soothing my dry throat. I nibbled on the bread and cheese he offered, feeling grateful for the small meal despite the delay in getting to the ship. I bit into a sweet piece of fruit as the sunrise painted the sky in hues of orange and pink. For a moment I wondered if Rion was awake yet, and if could he see the sky as well.

Soon we were back on the road and I felt so sleepy. Before I knew it, I was dozing against the window as the scenery flashed by. When I woke again, Gareth pulled over to the side of the road. I was very groggy but could feel that something was very wrong. I felt like I needed air, but my arms felt too heavy to open my door.

I looked around to see that the guards were stumbling around as if confused. Suddenly one of them staggered, crashing to his knees. Another bent over, retching violently. Confusion clouded my mind as I struggled to make sense of what I was seeing.

Gareth appeared beside me, face grim. "We need to go, now."

"What’s happening to them?" I asked as he hustled me from the SUV toward a waiting black sedan, the Royal Guard members collapsing around us as his men stayed back to deal with any who were putting up a fight.

"No time to explain. Get in," he ordered. My legs were wobbly and I tried to shift to get away but couldn’t. Dread twisted my gut, and I had no choice but to let him force me into the sedan.

Gareth sped off down the highway.

"You poisoned us," I whispered, horrified. "The water...."

Gareth’s jaw tightened, his knuckles white on the steering wheel. We drove in tense silence for miles before finally turning onto a small private airfield.

There, a sleek jet awaited. Gareth grabbed my arm, marching me up the stairs into the plush cabin. The engines roared to life before I had even buckled my seatbelt.

I whirled on Gareth as the ground fell away below us. "Where are you taking me?"

His eyes held a fanatical gleam. "I’m taking you home, Daphne. The only reason I came all of this way was to have you. I came all this way for you. I have no intention of taking you to another man.”

“Alpha Gareth, you must know that my parents will send more guards for me.”

He laughed harshly. “By the time they know what’s happened to you, it will be too late.”

"Too late for what?” I shuddered, wondering just exactly what he planned to do to me. I shook my head, still feeling strange and heavy from the poison. I put my hand on my belly worried what it might do to the baby. “Why are you doing this?”

Gareth clasped my shoulders almost gently. "Don’t you see? You and I are destined for greatness, just as your parents were."

I gaped at him. "Gareth...” I nearly choked on his name. “We were never really engaged."

“But in the eyes of the world we were, and I thought I would have time to sway you once we were here. I understand why you changed your mind. But, once you see all that I have to offer, the pack that you would be Luna of, I know you will be reasonable.”

“Alpha Gareth, I have no interest in being your Luna.”

"Then pretend you do. Play your part convincingly, and you’ll find I can be quite generous. Defy me, and things will go very badly for you."

I turned from his disturbing glare and stared numbly out the window. My heart pounded, my mouth dry with fear as the reality sunk in that I was trapped. Gareth sat close beside me, his large frame taking up more than his share of space. I scooted away but his presence still overwhelmed me.

"You might as well relax. We have a long flight ahead," Gareth said casually, as if we were simply on a normal trip.

I turned to face him, anger temporarily overcoming my anxiety. "Relax? How can I relax when you’ve kidnapped me against my will?" My voice shook.

Gareth’s expression darkened, eyes cold. "I wouldn’t use words like ’kidnap’ if I were you. As I said–play your part convincingly as my Luna, and all will go smoothly when we return home. Defy me...."

He trailed off menacingly.

I shrank back into my seat, a chill running through me. Clearly, Gareth was not stable if he thought I would ever willingly be his mate after this. But calling him out would only make this situation worse.

We flew for a few hours over the seas of the Southern Pass and then over an eastern mountain range until at last the jet touched down in a remote airfield. Gareth hurried me into another waiting vehicle, speeding down dirt roads that wound through dense forest.

We arrived at an imposing iron gate, the crest of the Trulien pack emblazoned on it. Beyond lay a sprawling mansion and outbuildings–his pack compound.

I held back tears as I realized how cut off from the rest of the world I would be once we entered those gates.

I already knew it was too late to do anything to help Rion. But would I be able to save myself and our child? Would I ever see my family again?
