Chapter 1141: Chapter 52 : The Shattering of Sweet Silence
*Eva*
I did my best to appear nonchalant as I ordered a drink at the bar, putting myself just barely within earshot of the two sketchy captains, who seemed to be getting a little too much enjoyment out of their time together to be purely casual.
My suspicion only spiked when the two abandoned their drinks and headed toward the doors leading outside. I waited for a couple of moments before slipping off the barstool I had perched on and followed the two a few paces behind.
I slipped out of the tiniest space in the door possible and looked around. They were nowhere in sight. I shut the door as quickly and quietly as I could, trying to figure out where they could have disappeared to so quickly.
I turned toward a couple of hushed, but distinctive voices, realizing that it was coming from around the corner. I crouched low, pressing myself against the wall toward the voices. I peered around the corner, ducking back when I spotted them, my anger simmering as I listened to them begin to plot.
“So, what do you know about the dark witch’s treasure?” Kyle asked once the more casual chit-chat had died down.
I felt my eyes go round in astonishment, but then they narrowed as I guessed the direction this conversation was going.
“Its location is unknown, but it is supposedly a hoard,” Carissa said in a low voice full of longing. “It is well hidden, possibly underground in a weaving catacomb.”
Kyle sounded skeptical. “I’ve heard that the treasure lies in a mountain, others have said it is deep in the ocean somewhere.”
I could almost see Carissa roll her green eyes. “What do you expect, considering that you’re likely hearing rumors from a bunch of pirates?”
The two started to argue back and forth about the whereabouts of the supposed treasure. I felt my stomach tumble uncomfortably as anger filled me at their conversation.
Mother’s precious treasure was in danger, and I would sooner rot six feet below the ground before I let those two ingrates get their grubby hands on it.
“Enough of this childish arguing,” Carissa snapped in a shrill voice. “Obviously, neither of us know where to even start in terms of searching for the treasure.”
“You claimed that you had some lead on your ship,” Kyle pointed out with heavy impatience in his deep voice. “What is it? Some kind of map?”
Carissa seemed to be grasping onto her last thread of patience. For a brief second, I pitied the young woman. I knew the feeling well. “No, not a lead, leads–plural.”
“What leads?” Kyle asked flatly, seeming on the very edge of his patience as well.
Perhaps I had been worried for nothing. These two didn’t seem like much of a threat. I doubted that they would be able to work together well enough to form an actual plot. They were like squabbling children.
“The Dark Witch’s daughter is on my ship,” Carissa said in a flat voice, causing my blood to run cold in my veins.
“So what?” Kyle demanded. “I’m already well aware of the fortune with which you have been bestowed. I was planning to take her to the royal family myself to get the reward money. If you’re wise, perhaps we should forget the treasure and do that instead.”
I stumbled back, feeling as if I had been struck sharply across the face. How quickly I had underestimated the two of them. I had at least underestimated Carissa, who seemed to have a familiar conniving mind comparable to my own.
“You idiot,” Carissa snapped, echoing my own sentiments toward the burly captain. “Naturally, I am also aware of the hefty reward that would be given for the capture of the Dark Witch’s daughter. But think! We could first use the girl to lead us to the treasure.”
I could almost hear my heartbeat pounding in my ears as I waited to hear more of this terrifying plan.
“How would we make her do that?” Kyle demanded, completely lost.
I could tell that Carissa had a sinister smirk on her face as she responded. “I said leads, didn’t I?”
“You did,” Kyle confirmed in his stupid, puzzled voice.
“The son of the Dark Witch is also aboard my ship,” Carissa said. “As we speak, he should be being detained. We’ll make the daughter talk if she ever wants to see her brother alive again.”
I barely held back a gasp as I turned and ran back into the inn, my wide eyes searching frantically for Rion. Where was he? Did they already have him?
I shoved through the crowd and down a small, dark hallway. It didn’t take me long to find them. There was obviously a scuffle going on in one of the rooms toward the end of the hallway. I used my magic to break the hinges on the tiny door before giving it a swift kick.
My blood ran cold as I stared at the scene before me.
My brother was tied to a tiny wooden chair, his face pale and his eyes closed. Two rough pirates stood on either side of his chair. That worthless Crimson princess was being restrained by another pirate, her eyes wide and frightened.
“Unhand him!” I shrieked, my voice drowned out by the boisterous party down the hall. I held my hands out, planning to use my powers, but all I managed to do was push two of the men closest to Rion to the floor.
“Oh, they can’t do that,” said a frightening voice from behind me.
I spun around, my eyes narrowing immediately at Carissa and Kyle, who were looking at me with sinister grins.
“I know your plan!” I informed them between my teeth. “Let him go. There is no need for this.”
Kyle stepped toward me and I raised my hands defensively, only managing to bind the large man for a moment. He chuckled. “Since you know our plan, then perhaps you should cooperate.”
I sucked in a sharp breath. My powers were waning. What was going on?
Carissa giggled in a scary voice. “Your precious brother has been poisoned, little witch. So, if you want us to give you the antidote, I suggest you take us right to your precious mother’s treasure. Otherwise, we will have no issue letting him die.”
I hissed at them, raising my arms again, envisioning lifting them up and squeezing the air out of their worthless little bodies. I furrowed my eyebrows, feeling the strain of my ability as Kyle and Carissa lifted a couple of feet off of the ground before the internal force became too much for me and I collapsed to my knees. Kyle and Carissa dropped lightly to their feet, both smirking down at me as I panted from the exertion.
This was bad... very bad.

*Daphne*
Rion and I were lying in the tiny inn bed together, not speaking, just enjoying the sweet silence that surrounded us. For just this moment, we could push away the stress of trying to escape from Carissa and Kyle, and just be together.
I worried that Rion would order me to leave as soon as the buzz from our lovemaking subsided and we slowly slipped into our clothes, but he immediately pulled me into his arms, covering us both with the thin comforter. He swaddled me before pulling me against his chest, stroking my hair over and over.
The moment was so perfect that I decided that now was a good time to tell him about our child.
“Rion,” I said, my eyes widening slightly at the sound of my own voice.
Rion shifted slightly so he could look down into my face, his gray eyes half-lidded from our lovemaking. “What is it, Daphne?”
I opened my mouth, but before I could, Rion’s eyes moved sharply to the door. I blinked up at him, preparing to ask what had caused his eyes to darken so suddenly, but then the door suddenly swung open, and about half a dozen of Carissa’s pirates burst in.
Rion jumped up from the bed, pulling me with him, but the men were faster and caught us in no time. Two of them grabbed Rion by the shoulders, and another two grabbed onto mine and they yanked us apart.
I cried out and started to flail desperately, but I was shoved into the chest of another smaller pirate, who easily had my wrists behind my back in a quick bind.
I heard Rion cursing and fighting the other four or so men. In no time at all, the pirates had him tied to a chair. I screamed when one of them pulled a needle out of nowhere and stuck it in Rion’s neck.
I cried his name when his gray eyes widened for a brief second before they fluttered shut and his head slumped to the side.
“Rion!” I shrieked, kicking and flailing as best as I could against the one pirate. “What did you do to him?!”
Eva burst through the door at that moment, her gray eyes landing on Rion before narrowing in fury. I watched helplessly as she faced off against Carissa and Kyle, but something was very wrong with her powers. She couldn’t even lift a single person in the room, let alone kill them.
The strain from trying to use her diminished abilities was too much, and she collapsed to the floor. She looked up hatefully at our adversaries, refusing to show weakness on her face despite the fact that she was on her knees. I jumped slightly when her eyes turned to me.
“Very well,” she said finally, her voice weak from exertion. “I’ll lead you to the treasure. Just please, heal my brother!”
My eyes rounded. It was the first time I had heard the headstrong woman beg.
Carissa threw her head back, her red curls bouncing around her as she did so. “I don’t think so,” she said. “You’ll lead us to the treasure first. Only then will we hand over the antidote.”
I felt tears prick my eyes as I stared at Rion’s still, tied-up form.
Eva glanced at her brother as well, her large gray eyes raging. Those eyes briefly flickered in my direction before she turned to face the two captains again. “Very well.”
What else could she say? With her powers not cooperating, there was no other option.
We were led roughly through a back door. It was still raining, but not nearly as hard as it had been. I could see that the waves had calmed considerably.
It was safe to travel again, which was definitely fortunate considering Rion didn’t look good.
Who knew how much longer he had left?
As we were shoved up a thin ramp leading up to Carissa’s ship, Eva suddenly pulled away roughly from the two pirates who held her. “Unhand me! Do you think I am in any position to fight you when my brother has been poisoned? I will do anything to save him, including cooperate with you worthless swine!”
The pirates looked to Carissa, who shrugged but narrowed her eyes at Eva. “The little witch has a point. She is at our mercy now. You may let her and the little princess flounce about on the ship.”
I winced when the two pirates who had been holding onto me let me go. It was almost painful since they had been squeezing my upper arms in their thick hands.
We continued up the ramp. I was walking right behind Eva now, but I wasn’t looking at her. I was looking past her at Rion’s limp form hanging over the shoulder of a tall, thick pirate.
As soon as we stepped onto the ship, Carissa’s pirates immediately set off in different directions to prepare for departure. I jumped when a hand snatched my wrist. My eyes widened when I saw it was Eva who had grabbed me.
Rion’s sister tightened her hand on my wrist before pulling me along behind her. “Come with me. I’m going to need your help.”
