Chapter 1121: Chapter 32 : It’s All Over

*Daphne*

Katheryn drove us the entire way out of the dark forest and back to her inn. It was in the late afternoon when we arrived, and we were all tired and hungry.

“I don’t know about you guys, but I could use a stiff drink,” she said as she shut off the ignition.

I looked at her and she gave a small smile. With the stress of Eva’s rescue behind us, I began to realize that soon, I would be back home. A small smile touched my lips as well. After everything I’d been through, I had a greater appreciation for my family, and I would do whatever it took to help my mother find a way to help Rhys wake up again.

We got out of the car and trudged up to the inn. It was already opened by her staff with a few patrons milling about. The smell of fried potatoes, seared meat, and beer reached my nose. The rest of the crew branched off and walked toward the tables or the bar.

“Come with me to the office. We’ve got plans to discuss,” Katheryn said, bypassing me to show the way.

“I need to get Eva to a room so she can get some rest,” Rion said.

Eva looked at him.

“Everything’s fine,” he added. “Once we’re done with our business here, I’ll come right back.”

Instead of answering Rion’s reassurance, she turned to me. Her brow furrowed with curiosity. “Are you really the princess?” she asked me.

I smiled at her despite being put on the spot. “I am Princess Daphne Crimson, yes.”

“Why did you help rescue me?”

I remembered my visions of Rion’s and her past, how painful it was and how I felt destined to help them.

“I know how special you are to Rion. When I found out about your situation, I knew that I could help.”

She seemed satisfied with that answer and nodded. Rion broke away from me and Katheryn to lead Eva up the stairs to the bedrooms.

I followed Katheryn down a flight of stairs. She flicked on the light to a large meeting room with a long table.

“I’ll bring down some food,” she said, and she walked back up the steps.

I waited in silence for a few minutes before Rion came back.

“Is Eva okay?” I asked.

He smiled. “She’s finally safe.”

I smiled back.

Rion and I looked at each other. We knew what the meeting was about. We had to plan a way to exchange me for my parents’ reward money... my freedom. It also meant saying goodbye to Rion.

Time passed between us in awkward silence as we waited for Katheryn to return with food. When she did, she set it on the table and drew out a ledger.

“So, Rion, my deal with you was for your payment plus my share of the reward, and Princess, you promised ten million to save Rion from that crazy guy and the Royal Guard in that prison,” she said as she scribbled to come up with the total figure. She ripped off a piece of perforated paper and handed it to me. “That’s what we agreed upon,” she said, not looking at either of us but simply taking a bite of her sandwich.

Rion and I glanced at each other.

“It’s fine, Rion,” I said. I looked back at Katheryn. “Listen, I’ve been thinking. It’s a lot of risk for all of us to go back to the palace together. Rion and Eva should go ahead and get as far away as possible. I’ll pay this whole thing myself if you just let me go now. I don’t have my money with me after I was—”

I was going to say kidnapped and although it was accurate, I didn’t want to say it in Rion’s presence. So much had changed since then.

Instead, I said, “After I left. But if you let me go, I can get the money and hand it over myself.”

Katheryn made a grim smile and clicked her tongue. “How many times do I have to tell you that I never let a bag out of my sight? No... I’m not willing to take the chance that you’ll stiff me. As long as I have you, I have leverage. We get to the capital. Rion can pay me what he owes, then we’ll go meet your parents for the reward and afterward, you pay what you owe.”

“Katheryn, I understand that you don’t really trust me—”

“Good, now that we’re on the same page.... I will send word to your parents that I rescued you and am bringing you in and have them pick a safe place to hand you over.”

I felt a sick feeling in the pit of my stomach. I knew Katheryn had put her neck on the line for me and Rion more than once and deserved every penny she was getting, but I had a bad feeling about this plan.

Geoffrey’s words about Rion being wanted dead or alive echoed in my ears.

It was still a long way to the capital, and Rion would be heading toward more danger when he should have been getting as far away from the capital as possible.

After we finished eating and finalized plans with Katheryn, Daphne and I returned upstairs to join the rest of the crew.

“I’m gonna wash up,” Daphne said with a worried sigh.

I could tell that Katheryn’s plan to retrieve the reward and payment wasn’t sitting well with her.

“Okay, we can talk a little later,” I agreed, giving her hand a reassuring squeeze before I headed over to Eva’s room.

I opened the door to find her standing at the window and looking out. She turned and her large eyes landed on me. As I came closer, she gave me a warm smile.

My jaw tightened as I pushed back my last memories of her being taken before I was shot and left for dead. It was so long ago but still felt like only yesterday. I swallowed against the heartache of everything Eva must have endured from that moment until she was captured by Hestia’s followers.

“Are you okay?” I asked her.

She looked down and nodded. I could see that she was still shaken and bewildered. “I feel like I’ve been cooped up for so long.”

“Come on, let’s go for a walk and get some air,” I said, extending a hand to her.

“Okay.”

I led her through the loud noise of the bar and strolled with her to the peaceful setting of the backyard, which was bathed in the soft glow of the setting sun. We sat on the rocking chairs facing the garden.

“I have so much to say.” I sighed, glancing at her, almost afraid to look at her but more afraid of looking away, feeling like she might be a dream that would fade.

“I’m so happy to see you,” she spoke next. “I don’t I think ever really thought that this day would come... us being together again.”

“Me neither,” I admitted.

“The last time I saw you, they shot you. I thought you were dead. When our mother’s followers found me and told me you were alive, I—”

She took a breath. “They told me what they asked you to do to save me. I didn’t know for sure whether you would risk so much for me.”

“I would have risked anything to get you back, Eva,” I assured her.

“All of those men and even that princess... she willingly helped you to rescue me. I... I’ve been on my own for so long. I never thought anyone would ever care enough to....”

A tear spilled down her cheek and she quickly wiped it away. She fell quiet again and gently rocked in the chair, her dark hair swirling in the breeze.

She said nothing for some time. I let the silence grow between us as I gathered the courage to ask, “What happened after you were taken?”

“I don’t even know where to begin.”

She spoke so quietly as a faraway look haunted her eyes. I held my breath to brace myself for what I was about to hear.

“It’s alright. You can tell me anything, Eva.”

She finally looked at me.

“Those rogues that took me worked for a criminal organization of child traffickers. I remember being passed out before waking up in an abandoned warehouse with other girls and young women abducted like me and they... they sold me to Alpha Ronan, leader of the Gibbous Pack. At first, Ronan made me his slave. I grew up doing all the dirty work the others didn’t want to do.

“I was beaten almost all the time for almost anything. I was also quite sick all of the time. The others made fun of it. They called me a weakling. That harsh treatment stopped as I got older and stronger. I was making a better way to survive there.

“And there was a boy. He wasn’t part of the pack but he came by often. When I was fifteen, I fell in love with him before I realized he was a thief. He stole items from the Alpha’s mansion, but he did so infrequently so they wouldn’t notice.

“When I found out, he said he was planning an escape for us. He told me that he could earn enough for us to survive with the things he could steal, and that once he had enough, we could leave together. But one morning I woke up, and he was gone, and so were all the stolen goods... and I was pregnant.”

My wolf screamed in rage at that bastard for leaving her like that, but I remained quiet and let her continue.

“The baby... didn’t make it full term, and I did my best to still survive. But on my eighteenth birthday, the Alpha forced me to be his breeder. I had two sons for him. Within a month of the second child’s birth, the Alpha sold me. I never saw my boys again after that.”

She slowed down and winced. The protective instinct of my wolf surged again. I had to control my anger.

“I finally got my wolf at twenty-one and realized it was my chance to escape that hell, and so I did. I had the power to fight my way out and found myself wandering from place to place in the Light Realm. Somehow, our mother’s followers found me and took me hostage.”

She paused as if she was going to say something else, then stopped. She looked at me, and my heart throbbed with anger and despair.

“I know it wasn’t your fault and you couldn’t do anything about it,” she said. “It was just bad luck.”

I didn’t believe in luck.

I placed my hand on her shoulder protectively, fighting to contain the mix of anger and pain I felt knowing what her life had been like. “I promise never to let anything like this happen to you ever again. Once everything is settled with Katheryn, we’re heading to the Light Realm to kill that son of a bitch Alpha and get your boys back.”
