Chapter 1068: Chapter 131 : Life Back on Track

Lucas and I made an immediate appointment with a doctor to have the baby checked. I knew the other Sasha took care of herself, and him, but she’d been through so much with my body, and I wanted to make sure everything was okay.

Lucas held my hand in the waiting room. Every time a nurse opened the door and called another patient, I squeezed his hand.

“Sasha, what’s wrong?”

“I’m just... worried. What if something isn’t right with the baby?”

He patted my hand. “I’m sure everything is fine.” He kissed the back of my hand.

I was called next and we went into the exam room. Without going into any details about the alternate realities and body swapping, I explained that I’d been kidnapped, had a rough few months, and was concerned about the baby’s health.

“We’ll take a blood sample and perform an ultrasound,” the nurse suggested.

I lay back on the exam table. Lucas held my hand the entire time.

“No matter what, I love you and our baby, okay?” He kissed my forehead.

I nodded. “Okay.”

The nurse took my blood first. Then she pushed up my shirt and squeezed some cold gel on me. She put the ultrasound wand to my skin and I immediately heard a soft thwump, thwump, thwump.

“That’s the baby’s heartbeat.” The nurse turned the monitor toward me and pointed it out.

“Oh, that’s him. That’s our son,” I gushed, squeezing Lucas’s hand.

He kissed my forehead and stroked my hair. “Yeah, that’s our little guy.”

“Can you... does everything look okay?” I asked nervously, chewing the inside of my cheek.

The nurse nodded. “Everything looks fine. You’ve got a healthy baby boy in there.”

I sighed a big sigh and smiled at Lucas. Tears pricked my eyes.

“That’s the best news I’ve had in a long, long time.”

Lucas nodded. “Hear that? Our son is perfectly fine.”

I put my shirt back on the nurse took notes on her clipboard. She looked up as I got off the exam table.

“Based on what you’ve gone through, I would advise taking it easy for the rest of your pregnancy.”

“You mean like, bedrest?” I arched an eyebrow.

“Nothing that extreme, just taking it easy.”

I nodded.

Ian drove us back to the mansion, and Lucas kept looking at me with a serious expression.

“What?”

“You heard what the nurse said. You should take things easy. Are you sure you want to go back to school and finish out the semester? Maybe you should stay at home and actually take it easy.”

I rolled my eyes. “Come on, Lucas. I’m so close to having my degree. The job the other Sasha got me–I need to keep working at that too. We need money to get ready for the baby.”

“That doesn’t sound like taking it easy. Work and school?”

“The other Sasha worked really hard to keep my grades up and help me get that job. I don’t want it to be for nothing. I’ll be fine Lucas. It’s just a few exams.”

He narrowed his eyes at me suspiciously. If it was up to him, I’d be on bedrest until the baby was born. I knew that would drive me crazy.

“Alright, if you think that’s best.”

“I do.” I nodded.

When I got back to school, I saw just how well the other Sasha had kept my grades up. I didn’t have much classwork left to do. It was mostly just the final exams. Unfortunately, that meant extra studying since I missed out on a lot of the coursework that would be on the exams.

I needed to catch up, even if my grades didn’t indicate that. I stopped by the library and got all the books and the assignments I needed.

When I showed up at the mansion, Lucas looked concerned. He ran to me and took the heavy books from my arms.

“What is all this?”

“The other Sasha kept up on my assignments, but that means I need to do them myself in order to pass my finals.”

“You’re putting even more work on yourself, Sasha,” he argued.

“It’s fine, Lucas. I’m going to be sitting on the couch reading and doing homework. It doesn’t get much more ‘easy’ than that. If you want to make sure I’m taken care of, you can make me snacks and help quiz me.”

Lucas gave me a look. Finally, he set my books down and agreed. “Okay. But I’m calling it a day when I think you’ve had enough.”

I had just two weeks before my final exams, and that meant a lot of studying and cramming. I had to fit almost a whole semester of knowledge into just a couple of weeks.

Lucas was a saint, helping me study, quizzing me, and always making sure I was fed and hydrated.

“Lucas, we need a nursery,” I said one day, just after he asked me a quiz question.

He peered over the top of my textbook at me.

I had my feet in his lap, stretched out on the couch.

“That’s not the answer to the question about the proper dimensions,” he said, frowning.

“Forget about that! We’re going to have a baby shortly after I graduate and we don’t have a nursery ready. I can’t believe I forgot!”

I got up as quickly as I could and headed upstairs.

“Sasha, where are you going?”

“I’m going to pick out a room and start getting a nursery ready. We need somewhere to put the baby.”

“You’re not taking it easy,” he pointed out, following me up the stairs.

I waved him off and went to the guest room where the other Sasha had stayed. “This is the room. If you get me paint and some catalogs, I can get the nursery ready.”

“Sasha....”

“I can put the crib here, and the changing table over there. Oh, and I want a rocking chair where I can read to the baby.” I pointed around the room excitedly as I spoke.

Lucas sighed heavily. “Fine, but I’m moving the furniture and doing all the lifting, okay?”

“Yeah, yeah.” I waved him off.

Every day I studied, worked on the nursery, worked at my job, and got ready for graduation. Sometimes, it seemed like the days weren’t long enough.

I picked out a soft blue color for the nursery walls and the cutest wooden crib with bears painted on it. I even started picking out little outfits for the baby.

When I finally sat down in a classroom to take my final exams, I was exhausted.

I brought my pencils, a bottle of water, and a large eraser and sat down with my test booklet, waiting for the timer to tell me to start.

“You can do this,” I whispered to myself. “You know the material.”

I trundled through the exams as best as I could. When the day was done, Lucas picked me up.

“How’d it go?”

I sighed and shrugged. “I did my best. I guess I’ll find out if they don’t invite me back for graduation.”

“I’m sure you did just fine.”

He pulled away from the curb but didn’t head in the direction of the mansion.

“Um... Lucas, where are we going?”

“I have a little getaway planned, seeing as you finished all your studying and your final exams.”

“Lucas! We can’t just leave! I can’t... I mean, I have work and the nursery, and graduation.”

“I took care of notifying your job, the nursery isn’t going anywhere, and we will be back before graduation.” He winked and grinned at me as he lazily turned the steering wheel. We rounded a corner onto a back country road. I knew it led to the coast.

“I can’t believe you. What about packing? I don’t have anything but my pencils.” I held up my pencil case to show him the broken pencils that didn’t survive the exam.

“I packed for you. Come on, Sasha, you’ve been working so hard. You deserve a little R and R.”

“Hmph.” I crossed my arms and turned out the window. I couldn’t believe Lucas would do something like this.

“Oh, you can’t stay mad at me forever, not after the early morning massage and spa day I have planned for you.”

I glanced sideways at him and he smirked.

“Spa day?”

“That’s right. You’ll be off your feet, enjoying cold drinks and all the pampering you can imagine for three days.”

“Well... I can imagine a lot... are you sure?”

He laughed. “I’ve got you covered.”

Lucas pulled into a quiet, oceanside resort where several other couples were already registered and enjoying themselves.

Our bags were brought to a room with big, half-circle windows that gave us a perfect, gorgeous view of the beach and ocean, all the way to the horizon.

We had a king-sized bed and a jacuzzi tub in the bathroom. All the windows were open, letting in the sounds of the waves.

It was hard to stay angry at Lucas when this place was so amazing.

He ordered room service and encouraged me to take a bath. The jacuzzi tub was already full of water, frothing and scented with a delicious fragrance. There were little flower candles all around the bathroom illuminating it with golden light.

I got in the tub and oh boy, did it feel good. The bubbles tickled my skin, and I felt all the tension melting away.

Lucas brought me dinner and fed me while I relaxed in the bath. Afterward, he slipped into the tub with me and held me against his chest as we relaxed together.

The next morning, two massage therapists came to our room. Lucas and I got full body massages. It felt so good on my feet and legs. I was in absolute bliss... I even got a facial and a pedicure.

I couldn’t remember the last time I felt this spoiled.

The rest of the day, we hung out in the room in our spa robes, eating fresh fruit and enjoying each other’s company.

Lucas was right. I needed this.

“Do you think you’re up for going out to dinner tonight?” Lucas asked.

We were snuggled on a deck recliner. Our balcony hung over the water and I could hear it below, mixed with the calls from seagulls overhead.

“Does that mean getting dressed?” I groaned.

Lucas chuckled. “Yeah. But I already picked out your dress, so you don’t have to do much.”

I sighed and nodded. “Okay, we can go out.”

Lucas had reservations for a restaurant at the resort. It was on the beach, so we had to take our shoes off and walk in the sand to get to our table.

All the tables were two tops with white cloths on them, lit candles, and a floral centerpiece. All the dishes were designed after seashells. The restaurant was covered in a white tent with string lights hanging from the ceiling for added lighting.

We ordered our meals, and I looked out at the sun setting over the water.

“How are you feeling, Sasha?”

I smiled and looked back at Lucas. “I feel... relaxed, and happy.”

He reached across the table and took my hand. “I told you that you needed this.”

I rolled my eyes.

Lucas gently ran his thumb over my knuckles. “You know, going through what we’ve been through... losing our memories, reconnecting in different realities, almost marrying other people... it made me realize just how much I appreciate our mate bond and the connection we have.”

My heart swelled and I squeezed Lucas’s fingers in mine. “I know what you mean.”

Lucas reached into his pocket and pulled out a small black box. He put it on the table in front of me.

“Now that we have our own bodies back, I wanted to make what I feel in my heart official. Sasha, will you marry me?” he flipped the lid open on the box to reveal a gorgeous diamond ring inside.

I gasped and covered my mouth with my hand. “Oh... Lucas... Yes! Yes, I will marry you!”
