Chapter 1066: Chapter 129 : Restoring Balance
*Lucas*
Xander and Lena went to the church to keep an eye on the Lycaon worshippers. When they reappeared, they didn’t look happy.
“The church is abandoned,” Xander said.
I sighed. “The ritual must be happening somewhere else. Are there any sacred places within the city where they’d want to perform the ritual?”
“There are a couple. One of the places is the Moon Goddess temple we unearthed. Think of the insult it would be to the Moon Goddess if they brought the Dark Lord back in her own temple,” Lena suggested.
“There’s another Lycaon Church on the outskirts of town. It has been abandoned for years, but they might go there to avoid detection,” Xander suggested.
“We’ll need to split up,” I said.
“No, Lucas, we have to stick together,” Sasha argued.
I took her hands in mine and kissed her palms gently. “Sasha, if we all go to one location and it is the wrong one, the prince’s life will be in danger.”
“We’re stronger together,” she argued.
“We’ll stay together. Xander and Lena can go together,” I promised. I looked back at the King and Queen. “We’ll take the Moon Goddess temple. Both Sasha and I have personal connections there.”
“Alright. We’ll meet back here as soon as the prince is safe,” Xander insisted.
We parted ways, and Sasha and I shifted so we could make it to the Moon Goddess temple faster. It was a long run, and we paced ourselves so we didn’t burn out. I kept looking at the sun, watching it sink toward the horizon.
We were barely going to make it....
We arrived at the temple site and it was mobbed with Lycaon Church members. I shifted back and threw on the cloak I’d brought with me. Sasha did the same.
“I think we found the ritual spot,” I muttered.
“I don’t see the prince yet.” She craned her neck and looked around.
“There’s an altar closer to the temple. We should get closer because that’s where the sacrifice will take place.”
We weaved our way through the crowd. With our disguises and cloaks, no one even looked twice at us.
There was a murmur of excitement in the crowd. I caught snippets of their conversations.
“Tonight, the Dark King will return.”
“We’ll finally see the prophecy fulfilled.”
“I wonder what he’ll be like.”
“He’ll have to bless us for our loyalty.”
I rolled my eyes. These people were insane. I highly doubted Dark King Lycaon would bless anyone, even if they brought him back.
Just as we reached the altar, one of the Lycaon leaders came forward with Prince Rhys. His arms were tied behind his back and he had a gag over his mouth.
Anger surged through me. I clenched my fists, my blood boiling. How dare they manhandle a prince like that?
“Sasha, go around to the other side of the altar. When the time is right to attack, give me a signal.”
She nodded. She gave my hand a final squeeze and departed into the crowd. I lost sight of her quickly. My heart leaped into my throat as she vanished. I didn’t like being separated from her, but I could feel the mate bond strong between us.
“Lycaon worshippers, gather round,” the lead Church member said. He motioned for everyone to move closer.
Excited bodies pressed against me, pushing me closer to the altar. I hoped I’d still be able to get Sasha’s signal when the time was right. It was a complete madhouse around here.
“Begin the chant.”
All the members of the church started chanting in low, sinister voices. The words were not in a language I knew, but I immediately felt dark energies stirring around me. We needed to end this now.
The head priest dragged Prince Rhys to the altar. He pushed the boy forward, pressing his cheek into the stone.
“Now, Lycaon, be free.” He raised a giant knife. It gleamed in the moonlight.
“Come on, Sasha,” I whispered.
‘Go Lucas, now!’ Her voice tore through the mindlink.
I didn’t hesitate. I launched forward, shifting. I knocked the knife out of the priest’s hands and pushed him away from Rhys with my body.
“What is the meaning of this? Blasphemy! Kill the interlopers!” the priest shouted, pointing at me.
The other church members cried out and rushed forward.
Sasha, in wolf form, sailed over me and Prince Rhys. She stood between us and the others. She snapped and snarled and slammed her front paws into the ground. A wave of energy went out, sending the church members backward.
I covered Prince Rhys with my body and gnawed at his gag and the ropes that bound him.
“No! Our sacrifice is getting away!” the lead priest called.
I turned to him and growled. He paled and scrambled away from me. I stalked toward him. Pouncing, I landed heavily on him, my paws cracking his ribs. He groaned and rolled over, crawling away.
I let him go. My priority was rescuing the prince. I returned to Rhys, his eyes tear-stained and blurry. I nuzzled him with my nose, showing him that I was a friend.
Suddenly, the battle stopped.
Four new priests came out of the crowd and circled around the altar. Two of them held their arms out with the future and past orbs.
I covered Prince Rhys. They weren’t going to get their sacrifice.
The four priests began chanting, holding the orbs up. All the church followers knelt down in reverence.
The orbs glowed lightly and over the altar a round, open portal spread apart, magic crackling around the edges.
A hush fell over everyone and the four chanting priests bowed down.
I stood protectively in front of the prince, keeping myself between him and the portal.
My heart pounded against my chest as I saw the Dark Lord himself walking toward the portal. His hair hung long, straight, and jet-black. His eyes illuminated flashes of red within two pools of solid darkness. I was momentarily captivated by an aura of ancient power that I felt coming from him.
His eyes locked onto mine with a wide, cruel smirk on his lips, and I knew nothing good could come from his presence in this reality. He walked toward the portal, and I could practically see the hunger in his eyes, ready to burn the world.
‘Sasha!’ I called through the mindlink.
She whipped around and snarled, leaping straight at the portal.
Everything stopped.

Suddenly, Sasha was standing in front of me, in human form. The portal was gone, and the four priests were flat on their backs.
The orbs were gone, too.
“It’s okay, Lucas. I froze time and closed the portal. I got the orbs, too.”
I quickly checked on Prince Rhys. He looked shaken but uninjured. I shifted back and Sasha handed me a robe.
The priests wailed and groaned, holding their arms up in the air, devastated that their ritual had failed.
“They’re going to be pissed that you stopped the ritual.” I nodded to the priests as they recovered. I scooped Rhys up in my arms. I had to keep him safe.
“We need to get out of here before they recover from their shock.”
I clutched Rhys close and headed away from the ritual site.
“Stop them!” one of the priests called. “Stop the blasphemers!”
We were surrounded by the priests in seconds. Some started ripping their robes off to shift.
“Dammit! Sasha, take Rhys. Get him out of here.”
I shook my head. “I’m not leaving you, Lucas. You need my power.”
“Keeping the prince safe is all that matters.”
A shiver ran through me as howls erupted around us. The priests looked frightened. They had no idea what was going on.
Rogues flooded in around us and started taking out the priests. I stood there stupidly, wondering what the hell was happening.
I saw a familiar face in the crowd. Rogue Lucas led the charge of his own pack of wolves.
He paused when he saw Sasha, and he smirked. “You’re Sasha, right?”
Sasha’s disguise must have worn off.
“Yeah. What are you doing here?”
“Saving your ass. Let’s get the prince to safety.”
I nodded and we followed the other Lucas. He led us out of the fight, assuring us that his pack could handle the priests.
We headed back to the city and found Xander and Lena. Their disguises had worn off too.
“Oh, my son!” Lena grabbed Rhys from my arms and hugged the boy close. “Are you okay? Tell me you’re okay?”
“I’m okay, Mommy.”
I put my arm around Sasha’s shoulder and pulled her against me. I could see the pain and confusion in her eyes as we watched Xander and Lena reunite with their son. It was easy to tell what she was thinking. She wanted her own child.
“It’s time to get back to our own reality,” I murmured. “Xander and Lena will clean up this mess and restore the balance to this reality.”
“I need to put my goddess powers back in the staff for safety. Xander and Lena can keep it safe here.”
Xander and Lena got the palace cleared out and brought Sasha the staff. She put her powers back into it.
“Lena, can you free the Stone from your reality? The Stone that caused all these problems is from our reality, and he’s there now, without the orbs,” Sasha said.
“We’ll see to it,” Lena assured her. She still had her arms around her son.
The other Lucas stood around awkwardly. He hadn’t talked to anyone, but he hadn’t left either.
“What are you going to do now?” I asked, approaching him.
He startled, like he wasn’t expecting to be spoken to.
“What do you mean?”
“You helped us out back there when you didn’t need to. I assume there’s a reason,” I said.
He sighed and shook his head. “I made a mistake when I rejected Sasha, my mate. I’ve been wrestling with the decision for weeks... I couldn’t sit by anymore and do nothing. That’s not who I am... or it’s not who I want to be.”
“I understand. Will you tell your Sasha that?”
He glanced at my Sasha. I pulled her closer, protectively.
The other Lucas sighed and nodded. “I don’t care if she’s pregnant. It doesn’t matter to me. I want to be with her and I want to make things right. I want us to be a family.”
Sasha bit her lower lip nervously. “You know that the baby isn’t hers, right?”
The other Lucas furrowed his brow. “I don’t understand.”
“Your Sasha and I... we switched bodies. I’m the one who’s pregnant. Once we switch bodies again, you’ll get your Sasha back and she won’t be pregnant. The two of you can start a family when you’re ready.”
The other Lucas grinned widely and nodded. “I’m a little nervous to see her again after I was such an ass.”
“Don’t worry, she wants to see you, too,” I assured him.
He grinned again and nodded. “Thank you, both of you. If it weren’t for your presence here, I might never have come to my senses.”
He reached a hand out and I shook it. I was glad to see he had finally got his shit together.
“Alright, Sasha, ready to go home and get your body back?”
She nodded. “I’m ready to have my baby.”
