Chapter 1055: Chapter 118 : The Ultimate Sacrifice
*Sasha*
I closed my eyes and focused all my power on connecting with the Sasha that had my body. My consciousness ran up against a black wall.
“Urgh!” I threw my arms up in the air. “What am I doing wrong?”
“You need better control of your powers,” the ominous, mysterious Night God told me.
“I’ve been practicing for who knows how long. Why can’t I get it right!?” I slammed my fists into the ground.
I had no idea how much time had passed in my reality. From what I could gather, time in Realm of White Queens didn’t run quite the same way as everywhere else. At least, that’s what the Night God had told me.
Every day, he taught me more about my powers, but even with all that knowledge, I still couldn’t connect to the alternate Sasha.
I looped my arms around myself and sighed.
How was Lucas doing? How was my baby? I missed them both so much.
“Your power is very great, the power of a Goddess. You can’t let your emotions get in the way.”
“I’m in control of my emotions!” I jumped to my feet and threw my arms out to the sides. Sighing, I sat back down again.
“There is another explanation for why you can’t connect with her. I’ve seen you grow in your powers. You should be capable of connecting.”
“So, what’s the other reason?”
“There’s a possibility that she does not want to make a connection. If she’s blocking you, then it is unlikely that you’ll find a way in.”
I frowned and looked around the strange Realm of the White Queens. Was I going to be stuck here because the other Sasha didn’t want me to come back?
“Why would she do that? She’s been taking care of my body and my baby. She said she wants her own body back.”
“I cannot answer that question. However, with your power, it should be easy to connect, unless there’s something else stopping you.”
“I’ve got one more thing I can try. If she really is blocking me, then her guard will be down while she sleeps. Can you tell me when it is nighttime in my reality?”
“Yes, of course.”
I couldn’t get over how gorgeous the Realm of the White Queens was. It was like an untouched paradise full of untold power.
When I wasn’t practicing to control my own powers, I spent time in the ethereal gardens. Flowers, that resembled lilies, grew all over. They were white and glowed silvery, just like the moon.
I ran my fingers along the delicate petals. In my time here, I hadn’t gone beyond the gardens or the main city. The realm was too unfamiliar, but full of goodness.
There was a part of me that felt like I belonged there, like I shouldn’t leave. The Night God had told me I had goddess powers now. Maybe I belonged in a world of gods and goddesses.
My heart clenched and I grabbed my chest. In my head, my wolf gave a forlorn howl. She missed her mate just as much as I did.
There was no way I could stay here.
The Night God appeared before me and I gasped. He did that a lot. I should have been used to it by then, but he always did it when I was lost in thought.
“It is nighttime in your reality,” he informed me. He held up a large, round pocket watch with dozens of little ticking hands.
I tilted my head to the side. How in the world did he keep all those times straight?
“Alright. I’m going to make a dream bridge. As long as I’m awake and she’s asleep, I’ll be stronger than her.”
There was a place in the garden, a pond surrounded by the glowing moon lilies. In the pond, white and black fish swam around each other, mimicking yin and yang.
I sat by the edge of the pond in the soft grass. This place was ripe with White Queen power, and I always felt so at peace there.
I closed my eyes and focused on weaving the dream bridge. In my mind, I saw tendrils of green and blue swirling around each other until the bridge became solid. My mind crossed the bridge and connected me directly to the alternate Sasha.
It worked....
I found myself in the alternate Sasha’s mind. She was dreaming, sitting in one of my college classes, taking an exam. I never had test anxiety, but apparently, this Sasha did.
I peeked over her shoulder and saw the exam had Lucas’s name on it and I frowned. I reached out and touched her shoulder.
Gasping, the other Sasha whipped around. She immediately glared at me.
“How did you get in here?”
“I’ve spent a long time mastering my new powers. They are stronger than yours, so I took advantage of your guard being down while you slept.”
“That’s... such a violation!” She stood up and squared off with me.
My eyes automatically wandered to her swollen belly and an overwhelming feeling of emptiness overtook me. I staggered back.
The other Sasha smirked and put her hands on her belly.
“Why have you been blocking me? You’re in my body with my baby. We promised we’d switch back.”
She shrugged casually. “I’ve spent some time in your reality, and it is a lot better than mine. My Lucas wants nothing to do with me, but yours... he is the perfect mate.”
“He’s not your mate!”
“So? He could get used to me. Besides, I’m going to have his baby and we’re going to raise the boy together. He’ll grow to love me.”
“I can’t believe this.” My lungs seized and I shook my head. “Why? Why would you try to take all this from me?”
“This isn’t really about you.” She spoke in an annoyingly casual voice like commandeering the life, body, child, and mate of someone else was nothing serious. “I’ve gotten rather comfortable in your life. I finished your classes, landed a job, spent time with your friends. I had that once, but I lost everything when I woke up pregnant in your body. Everything was messed up. ”
“Then go back home and fix it!”
“Why should I fix it when it’s your fault everything got messed up?”
“How is it my fault?”
I shook my head. My stomach felt like it was going to drop out of my feet. How had this happened? She was supposed to be helping me. I saved her from getting sacrificed, I helped her get in touch with her mate, even if he didn’t want her.
“You can’t steal my life! That’s so wrong.”
The other Sasha laughed and smirked. “And how are you going to stop me? You said it yourself. You had to wait until I was sleeping to make a connection. Even with all your new power, it isn’t enough.”
“You’re a real piece of work. It’s too bad Lucas will never fall for that. He’s probably already onto you.” I glared at her, driving my point home.
She shrugged again. “On the contrary. Lucas and I have been spending a lot of quality time together. He even stopped me from leaving recently. I think he’s starting to see me for the first time and that’s just the beginning.”
Her words paralyzed me to the spot. “No....” My voice was a tiny whisper. I wouldn’t believe it.
I couldn’t.
“He’ll never fully accept you. Any kindness he shows you is because you’re carrying his son. But our bond is too strong. You’ll never replace me.”
The other Sasha frowned. After a long, tense moment, she sighed. I could see in her eyes that she suspected what I just told her.
“If... I agree to swap our bodies back, I want what you have in my reality.”
“What does that mean?” I creased my brow.
“I want you to connect me with my Lucas, convince him to be mates. I want a life with him and a family with him.”
“I can help you with that. I promise. You’ll have a good life in your own reality after we switch our bodies back. Please, don’t keep me from my mate like you’ve been kept from yours. Help me get my mate and my baby back.”
There was a moment of compassion on her face.
“Okay, we can talk about it....”
Suddenly, the other Sasha and my college classroom melted around me. The dream bridge crumbled away and I was thrust back into my own body.
“Dammit!” I slapped the water’s surface, splashing everywhere. The nearby fish swam away, startled.
I looked around for the Night God. He was never that far off.
“That did not go as planned.”
“No, it didn’t! She must have woken up and blocked me again.” I bowed my head. This was hopeless. “Please, tell me if there is another way to connect with her or get my body back.”
He was quiet for a very long time. Finally, I looked up at him. The expression on his face said it all. He wasn’t going to help me get my body back.
“This other Sasha is clearly irrational and untrustworthy. She betrayed you and is attempting to steal that which is not hers.”
“Yeah. That’s why I’m trying to get my body back, with or without her help.”
“You misunderstand... should you take your body back, the goddess power will be in the hands of an unstable, unworthy Dream Dancer. I cannot allow that.”
“Wh-what are you saying?” For the second time in a few hours, my heart sank and I felt like the rug was ripped out from under me.
“Do you really think it is wise to hand over that much power to this other Sasha?”
I shook my head. He had a point. What was I supposed to do? Did he want me to give up my entire life and just let her have my mate and my baby?
“If you were willing to make the sacrifice, you could return to your reality with the body you have.”
I looked down at the body. I’d gotten used to it over time, but it still didn’t feel like mine. If I left the Realm of the White Queen with this body, would I not get my own body back? Was it impossible for us to switch if we were in the same realm?
“You will retain all your goddess powers when you leave here, but the other Sasha will remain in your body and carry your baby.”
I looped my arms around myself and nodded somberly. That was a big decision. I left the Night God to think about what was best in this situation.
Just because the other Sasha carried my son and gave birth to him didn’t make her his mother. I could return to my reality, be with Lucas, and raise our son. I already knew the mate bond between us was still strong in this body.
Sighing, I nodded. It’s what I had to do. I’d have to give up getting my own body back.
I found the Night God. “I want you to help me return to my reality.”
