Chapter 1048: Chapter 111 : What Are You Doing Here
*Lucas*
What was Sasha trying to hide?
Ever since she snuck back into the bedroom in the middle of the night, I knew she was trying to hide something from me. I didn’t call her out on it because there was a look of desperation in her eyes.
Instead, I had Ian follow her. I know, not the best boyfriend move, but I wanted to make sure she was safe.
“She’s been visiting the Lycaon Church, regularly,” I told Brady over lunch at a nearby café.
“So?”
“So, she thinks that the church is hiding Morianne and that Morianne is our best bet at getting our bodies and our child back.”
Brady frowned. I couldn’t see his eyes behind his sunglasses, but I knew they were disapproving.
“Lucas, you haven’t been tailing her, have you?”
“What if I have? She’s been lying to me.”
“And your solution is to follow her around like some creep?”
I scoffed and shook my head. “I’m not the one who’s following her.”
“Okay, so you got someone else to follow her. That’s a whole new level of weird.”
“You’re missing the point, Brady. She’s purposefully putting herself in harm’s way. She’s being reckless.”
Brady reached for his drink and slurped some down. He didn’t appear at all surprised by Sasha’s actions, or upset by them.
“I’m sure she’s just doing what she thinks is necessary. Didn’t you tell me Xander is dragging his heels?”
“That’s not the point.” I leaned back in my chair and crossed my arms, sighing out my frustration.
Brady pursed his lips. “Okay, what is the point?”
“I don’t think she’s doing anything wrong, other than lying to me. But I understand why she thinks she has to. I haven’t been that supportive of her desire to act.”
“Then why are you telling me about all this if you don’t think she’s doing anything wrong?”
“She’s still putting herself in danger. I can’t accept that.”
Brady rubbed his temple. “Lucas, you’re acting a little crazy. You don’t want to stop Sasha from putting herself in danger but you can’t accept that she is either? Can you make up your mind?”
I groaned and rolled my eyes. How could I explain this better?
“She’s onto something, I know she is. As long as she’s getting the information that we need, then being part of the church is probably the best thing for her. I’m not going to let anything happen to her, though, as long as I can get there in time to keep her out of harm’s way.”
“And in the meantime, you’ll keep stalking her?” Brady asked.
I scoffed. “I’m not stalking her. I’m protecting her.”
“I doubt she’ll see the distinction.”
“It doesn’t matter. Would you let Phoebe sneak around and put herself in harm’s way without knowing that you could be there to protect her if something went wrong?”
“No. But Phoebe isn’t sneaking around. She’d tell me what was going on.”
“Are you sure?” I arched an eyebrow at him.
Brady sighed and bowed his head. “Okay, I don’t pretend to know what goes on in the mind of a woman. But is it really worth the risk? Could any information Sasha gets be worth the danger she’s in?”
No, it wasn’t. The words stuck in my throat when I tried to say them, and I looked away from Brady.
He huffed and shook his head at me. “Lucas, you need to snap Sasha out of this. You need to confront her before she does whatever she is intending to do.”
“Nothing bad has happened. She’s just trying to get information.” I defended Sasha’s actions, and my own in a roundabout away.
“It doesn’t matter if nothing bad is happening right now. The church was founded in the Dark Lord’s name. What good could possibly be going on in there? What good could they offer?”
“I don’t disagree. Sasha needs hope right now. If she can get hope from the church–”
“I think you’re playing with fire here, Lucas. You should go home and talk to Sasha. Offer her help if you want to, but don’t gamble with her life.”
I sighed and rubbed the back of my neck. “Sasha doesn’t want me involved. Otherwise, she would have come to me. She feels like she has to do this on her own. She feels like she has to get our baby back.”
“You really don’t think she wants your help?”
“I think that if I try to interfere, it will only push her further away. She’s been distant, and if I try to stop her or hold her back, we both know she won’t like that.”
“I don’t think she’s going to find the hope she’s looking for,” Brady argued. “If the church is hiding Morianne, they aren’t going to provide much more than false hope and misleading information.”
“You’re right.”
I wrapped up with Brady and headed back to the mansion. As soon as I got home, I saw Sasha leaving in a cab. She was away more and more. Whenever I confronted her about it, she always told me it was school-related.
It was a little late for her to be going to class or her work-study project.

*Sasha*
After a week of church events and church services, I finally got word that the head of the church was going to be there. I had to be at the church to meet him. He was the one who would have answers to my questions.
I went to the bathroom to brush my hair. Whenever I went to the church, I dressed modestly and made sure to look as innocent as possible. I liked to think that they’d be less suspicious if I looked like I belonged in a church.
“Hey, are you getting ready to go out?” Lucas popped his head into the bathroom.
“Oh, I have a test coming up. I was going to hit the library and do some studying.” I glanced at him through the mirror.
My stomach twisted. I really didn’t like lying to Lucas. He’d made it clear that he didn’t want to get involved with the Lycaon Church, though, and I wasn’t going to let him stop me.
“Do you want some company?” He smiled warmly at my reflection.
I bit my lower lip and looked down. “What would you do in the library, other than distract me? You’ll be bored out of your mind.” I giggled, to take the harshness out of my words.
“I’m sure I could find a way to entertain myself.”
I caught Lucas’s smirk as he wiggled his eyebrows. Giggling, I saw the heat rise in my cheeks through my reflection, the flush spreading down my neck and over my breasts.
“As much fun as that sounds, I think I should focus on studying. This is important.”
Lucas’s smile faded but he nodded. He left me alone in the bathroom.
I frowned at my own reflection. Lying to Lucas was the last thing I wanted to do. And that hurt look he’d given me–I had a feeling he knew I was lying.
I couldn’t let that get to me. Right now, I needed to get to Morianne and tonight, I was closer than ever.
I said goodbye to Lucas. He didn’t seem to be in a bad mood and he kissed me goodbye. He even said Ian could drive me to campus. I wasn’t going to refuse, because that would be more suspicious.
Ian dropped me at the library. I told him I’d call him when I was ready to be picked up. Just to keep up appearances, I went into the library and called a cab from there. I asked the cab to meet me around the backside of the library.
It was another silent drive to the Lycaon Church. I pulled the cloak they’d given me out of my backpack and put it on before getting to the church. I pulled the hood over my face like the other priestesses and monks walking around. As I entered the church, they nodded to me.
I didn’t recognize anyone and I hoped they didn’t recognize me, either.
The head of the church, a bald man in the same-colored cloak as the rest of us, stood at the pulpit. Everyone else took positions in the pews and I did the same. The only difference with the leader was that his cloak didn’t cover his face.
“Welcome, welcome all my children. Tonight is a very special night, not just because it is a momentous event for our church, but because we have a special guest here to guide us.”
The church doors opened and along with everyone else, I turned around.
I gasped and held my breath.
Morianne, wearing a cloak like the rest of us, just without her hood up, strode into the church. She walked down the aisle, head held high. Immediately, my eyes went to the staff in her hands. It was a very similar staff to the one in the other reality, the one that had stolen my powers.
I kept holding my breath, hoping she wouldn’t see through my disguise. If she did, I was done for....
There was something about her, as she joined the head monk. I squinted my eyes and studied her closer. She was Morianne, but she seemed... different.
I’d only had a brief run-in with the Morianne of my own reality, but the woman at the pulpit was definitely not the same priestess I had encountered here before.
Suddenly, I knew who she was. I clamped my hands over my mouth and nose, muffling my gasp.
That Morianne was the one from the other reality. She must have been able to switch to this reality.
It was the only explanation that made sense. She was supposed to be rotting in intensive care and instead, she was here with a new staff, ready to cause mayhem.
While Morianne and the head monk chatted, everyone else stood up and started mingling. There was a small pause in the ceremony to get everything set up.
I rose to my feet, and completely possessed, I started walking toward Morianne. She had a lot to answer for–stealing powers, sending Donovan and Stone after me, invading another reality. I couldn’t let her get away with any of this. All this time, she’d been right under our noses, and I wasn’t going to let her slip away again.
I fixed my eyes on the back of her head and walked through the crowd, straight toward her.
Just as I reached the pulpit steps, firm fingers grasped my wrist.
What the–
I looked down as the hand tugged me back.
‘Sasha, don’t.’
The mind link tugged at the back of my neck. I looked into the shadowed hood of the cloak. The person holding my wrist moved into the light and I saw Lucas hidden in the cloak.
What was he doing here?!
