Chapter 1045: Chapter 108 : On Our Own

Sasha was unusually quiet as we drove back to the mansion. I reached across the seat and took her hand in mine.

“What’s on your mind, my love?”

Sasha sighed. “I know you don’t want to confront the Lycaon Church, but right now, they’re our only lead to Morianne and our baby.”

“It’s not that I don’t want to. I just don’t trust them.” I glanced toward Sasha. She looked so down and upset. I wanted to do something to make her feel better.

“Of course, you don’t trust them. I don’t either. But we’re running out of options.” Her voice hitched ever so slightly.

“Sasha, we haven’t run out of options. I don’t want to run headlong into anything with the church because we think it is our only choice.”

Sasha scoffed. “Do you even want to get our child back!?”

I slammed the brakes on, the car screeching to a halt. Sasha gasped and stared at me, wide-eyed. I narrowed my eyes slightly at her.

“How can you even ask me that? Everything I have done has been about protecting you and our child.”

“Except for doing whatever it takes to get our baby back!”

“Is that really what you think?” I arched an eyebrow.

“How can I not? All you’re doing is coming up with reasons why we can’t follow leads and why we can’t do this or that.” She grunted and crossed her arms, turning away from me.

“I’m being cautious, Sasha. We’ve encountered the Lycaon Church in that other reality, and they weren’t exactly helpful or easy to deal with.”

“We don’t have time to be cautious! I don’t want our son to be born in some other reality with some other woman.”

“I don’t want that either.” I reached out to take her hand again but she pulled away. I knew she was mad at me.

This feeling had been growing in her for a while. I hadn’t confronted her about it because I didn’t want to push her. Now that it was all coming out, I understood her position more. Sasha was acting out emotionally. In order to get our bodies back and save our child, we needed to think rationally.

“Look, in the other reality, the Lycaon Church was willing to commit treason for Morianne. They had a lot of support and weren’t afraid of the consequences. We don’t know what the church is capable of in this reality.”

“And sitting around being cautious is exactly the way to find out?” Sasha scoffed and turned her head out the window.

I couldn’t see her face but I had a feeling she was scowling.

“I understand what you’re saying, Sasha. I know you’re afraid for our child. I want him back as much as you do. The other Sasha warned you she was afraid of what switching bodies again would do to our baby. We need to think this through.”

She took a deep breath and slowly turned to face me.

“I can’t stand this, Lucas. I feel so empty and alone.” She looped her arms around her stomach.

I tentatively took her hand again. This time, she didn’t pull away. I brought her hand to my lips and kissed her knuckles.

“I’m not giving up and I’m not discounting the church as a lead. I’m trying to think about things rationally through this.”

“It’s not like I don’t understand why you are cautious when it comes to the church. But they could be different in this reality. They haven’t tried anything treasonous and as far as we know, they are hiding Morianne, not plotting to overthrow the kingdom.”

“That’s true.” I nodded slowly and squeezed her hand. “But in this reality, they already destroyed the White Queen Temple. They could be capable of a lot more.”

“Is it worth the risk, just waiting for them to make a move?”

A frown tugged at my lips and I shrugged. “What makes you think the church would hand Morianne over or admit that they’re hiding her? I doubt saying ‘please’ would get them to cooperate.”

“Okay, I get it, we need a plan before we charge in. Can we at least talk to Lena and Xander about it?”

I smiled lightly and nodded, kissing her knuckles again.

“Sure, we can call them when we get home.” I moved my foot from the brake to the gas and started driving again.

Sasha was silent for the rest of the ride, but I could tell that her mood had improved. It was a small victory. No matter how upset Sasha got, I would be her rock and hold her steady until we could figure everything out.

When we got home, the mansion was empty. Brady and Pheobe were probably out on a date or wedding planning. I thought about how nice it would be if Sasha and I could go on dates and enjoy each other’s company, plan our future together.

Soon, very soon, we’d get that luxury for ourselves–I’d make sure of it.

I grabbed my phone and called Xander. It was late, but I had a feeling the king didn’t sleep a lot.

“Any luck finding Morianne yet?” I asked after we exchanged greetings.

Xander sighed. I imagined him bowing his head. “Nothing yet. A lot of the leads we are coming across... it seems like she’s purposefully misleading us.”

“I suspected as much, especially after talking to this witch in town, Rochel.”

“What did she have to say?”

I quickly relayed everything Rochel told us about the dangers of not having our bodies in our reality and twice Sasha’s magic in one reality. I told him about Morianne and the Lycaon church.

“Hmm... that’s... not unexpected.”

I frowned, even though he couldn’t see me. “You knew she might be hiding out with the church?”

“She’s a priestess among them. They are well connected and devious. I considered it as a possibility. I didn’t want to pursue the church, though, because it will make it that much more difficult to pin her down.”

“I don’t understand. The church doesn’t have more power than the king and queen.”

“Perhaps not, but right now, we don’t have any evidence against Morianne. Therefore, we have no grounds to order the church to turn her over.”

“She’s done so much to hurt Sasha. Isn’t that enough?”

Xander sighed again and I could practically hear him thinking through the phone.

“All we have is your word and Sasha’s word that she got Donovan and Stone to kidnap Sasha.”

“That’s not enough!?” I growled. I had really thought Xander would be helpful. I never thought he’d block me.

“When it comes to dealing with the church, it isn’t. We have plenty to work with against Donovan and we have a case against Stone, should we catch him. Even if they admit to Morianne being the one to hire them... the church could see it as their desperate attempt to shift blame onto someone else.”

I shook my head. Xander was making sense, but it didn’t matter to me. He cared more about the feelings of the church than helping Sasha and me rescue our child.

“I know it isn’t what you want to hear, Lucas, but picking a fight with the church, making demands without proof–there’s a large portion of the kingdom that wouldn’t like that.”

I clenched my fingers around the phone and growled. My wolf bristled, about ready to leap out and chomp down on the phone.

“How can you say that!? My child, Sasha’s child, is stranded in some other reality. Why are you weighing half the kingdom’s feelings over that!?” My voice rose in volume until I was practically screaming.

Sasha came toward me and touched my arm. I pulled away from her, not wanting to be soothed.

“Lucas...” Xander spoke softly, cutting into my rampage.

“I’m not thinking about who in the kingdom will be happy or unhappy. I’m thinking of the fate of my family and the fate of the entire reality. Doesn’t that outweigh the kingdom?”

Xander cleared his throat. “I’m not saying we won’t go after the church and figure this out. I’m just saying we need to be cautious. The church won’t take kindly to threats about our reality being at risk.”

“It isn’t a threat. It is the truth!”

“I know that. You know that. But these people and their followers are incredibly superstitious. Do you think that Lena and I will be able to help save this reality and help you with your bodies and get your child back if we’re also fighting a civil war against half the kingdom and the church?”

Xander spoke steadily but firmly. His words sank in and I sighed, relaxing my grip on the phone. My wolf settled down.

He made a good point. It wasn’t one I wanted to hear, but it was true. The church had a long history of warping the truth to their needs and purposes. It was no secret that they coveted power, even though they masked it with spirituality. Morianne fit right in with them, pretending that her own pursuits for power were altruistic in nature.

The church had destroyed the White Queen Temple to feed their own agenda, not caring what truth and knowledge was lost. They feared it would undermine their authority, their prophecies, and their beliefs.

“Xander, it’s not like I don’t understand your position. Time is of the essence here, and it is unwise to wait for the right opportunity to present itself. It might never come.”

“Lucas, I’m not insensitive to your plight and I do feel the weight of what is hanging over us. I am married to a White Queen and we have spoken of these matters often. The world at large wouldn’t understand, and there has to be a balance to our actions. Otherwise, something more catastrophic will happen and none of us will be able to help.”

“I....”

“Would you rather be in a position to help or be locked in a cell, helplessly watching this reality crumble?”

“Fine, we’ll do it your way!”

I tossed the phone across the room. It slammed against the wall, denting the plaster.

Xander was supposed to help. Instead, he was playing the diplomat. As rational as it was, it wasn’t good enough for me. I needed to do something. To keep my promise to Sasha and our child, I had to act.

My nostrils flared and I turned sharply. Sasha stood behind me, eyes glassy. Her lower lip quivered.

My frustration melted and I reached for her. I pulled her against me and pinned her to my chest. She sighed and wrapped her arms around me, nuzzling her face in my chest.

I didn’t want her to see how frustrated and helpless I felt.

“Don’t worry, this isn’t over yet. We’ll do this on our own if we have to.” I stroked my fingers through her hair.
