Chapter 1030: Chapter 93 : What the Future Holds
I was worried about Sasha. She recovered her strength and wasn’t as upset by what the magic had done, but she was upset about something.
“What will we do if the past orb isn’t in the temple beneath the library?” she asked when I confronted her.
I put my hands on her shoulders, stroking her neck with my thumbs.
“How is it that you always find something to worry about?” I teased. “The Immortal in this realm is dead. Morianne is going to prison. We got the cane, which means this Sasha has her powers back.”
Sasha sighed and shrugged against my hands. “I can’t help it. I wanted to stay here and fix the problems in this reality. But we have and now we still don’t have a way back. According to Stone, we might never get back.”
I scoffed. “Don’t believe what he said. He doesn’t know anything about the orbs. Besides, with your power, I’m sure you can figure it out.”
She nodded, but she didn’t look any happier or lighter.
I released Sasha and she went to the chair by the window. She sat down and wrapped a blanket around herself, looking out at the capital.
“I’m glad we fixed this reality, but it isn’t home. I miss my mom, my friends, my life on campus... I can’t have any of that here, not like I did at home.”
I went up behind Sasha and kissed the top of her head. I put my hands on her shoulders and squeezed gently.
“I know what you mean. The Lucas here has a very different relationship with his family. I don’t have the same career here... just a shack in the woods.”
I thought about what it would mean to start a life over here in this reality if we really couldn’t get back to our own. It wasn’t that I believed Stone, but Xander’s excavation project hadn’t found the orb yet. I wasn’t ready to be concerned, but Sasha was, and I wanted to make her feel better.
“You know, we’ve been cooped up in this palace for a while. Why don’t we ask Xander and Lena if we can go away for a day or two? The threats are gone. We should be fine.”
Sasha looked up with a warm smile. “Really? Where would we go?”
“We can go anywhere we want. Is there a place that you’ve longed to see?”
She bit her lower lip. “I’m thinking I’d like to see the ocean. I’ve only ever seen it by ship. But wouldn’t it be nice to see it from the coast?”
“I’ll make the arrangements with Xander. You start packing what you think we’ll need.”
I leaned down and brushed a quick kiss on her lips.
“Thank you, Lucas. You always know how to cheer me up.”
I found Xander in his study.
“Sasha and I want to get away for a few days,” I started the conversation.
“I think that’s a good idea. The palace has been crazy the past few days. I’m sure she could use a break.”
I nodded. “With everything that’s happened, she needs to clear her head. We’re thinking of going to the coast.”
Xander grinned. “Oh, I know of the perfect place. There’s a little secluded bungalow right on the beach. I’ll give you the details.”
“I really appreciate that, Xander.”
“In your absence, I will keep working on finding the past orb. We’re almost inside the temple now. It shouldn’t be much longer.
“After some fresh air, Sasha and I will be happy to help with the search.”
“You’re not planning on going alone, are you?” Lena asked, appearing from the doorway.
“Uh... yeah, that was kind of the idea.”
“I think it would be wise for the two of you to take a contingent of Royal Guards, just in case.”
I gave her a look. “Lena, the threats in this reality are gone.”
“Only the threats we know of. They may never be gone. I’m insisting that you take security. They will be discreet.”
“Very well.” I nodded respectfully to her.
“I understand that the two of you need a little time to clear your heads. However, I must remind you that it is imperative that the two of you return to your timeline and allow everyone return to the timelines of their origin,” Lena reiterated.
“Of course. Once the past orb is made available to us, we will correct that final mistake.”

We arrived at the bungalow Xander had told us about. It sat right on the beach, the waves coming close to the front door, frothing and bubbling.
Sasha’s smile lit up as bright as the sun overhead and she ran up the path to the bungalow. “This is absolutely gorgeous!”
I laughed and hurried after her. She ran right into the bedroom and threw her suitcase onto the bed.
I took Sasha’s hand and brought her onto the beach. On either side of us, there were large rocks, closing us into a private alcove. It was the perfect place to reconnect, get some fresh air, and relax.
I took my shoes off. Sasha did the same. We walked into the waves and the cool, ocean water splashed around our ankles. Sunlight glittered off the water and birds dipped and swooped in the open air.
“I feel all that tension melting away already,” Sasha told me.
I scooped her into my arms and lifted her, spinning her around.
She laughed.
“You feel relaxed already? We haven’t even gotten started.”
Sasha giggled and tightened her arms around my neck. “Did you have something particular planned?”
I set her down. “We’re here for you, Sasha. We can do whatever you want to do.”
She smiled and looked down a little shyly. I hooked my finger under her chin and tipped her eyes up.
“Sasha, please don’t worry. We’ll be home soon, rebuilding our lives.”
She nodded. “I know what I want to do.”
I arched an eyebrow at her. Sasha bit her lower lip and pulled her shirt off. Laughing, she ran down the beach, ripping her clothes off.
I stood, staring stupidly after her as she got progressively more naked.
She shifted and ran back toward me. Sasha’s wolf nuzzled her shoulder against me, her silky, soft fur pleasant and warm.
I looked deeply into her big, deep eyes.
‘Run with me, Lucas.’
Her voice was so happy and excited in my head. How could I say no to that?
Chuckling, I pulled my own clothes off and shifted. Sasha’s wolf nuzzled her head under my skin.
A shiver of delight ran through me, feeling fur on fur.
I howled and took off down the beach. Sasha ran after me. I led her into the nearby forest. All the delicious scents of the forest overwhelmed me. I felt like it had been too long since I’d been out in nature.
Sasha kept pace with me, her delicate paws hardly making a sound through the underbrush.
We trotted through the trees, golden sunrays beaming down on us. For the first time since getting my memories back in this timeline, I felt like I could breathe.
‘Oh, this is wonderful,’ Sasha told me. ‘I can stretch and breathe. I haven’t felt this alive in a long time.’
I closed my eyes, enjoying the soft sound of her voice through the mind-link. It was the first time I could enjoy that, too.
‘We’ve been through so much recently. It is nice to see you smiling and relaxing.’
She rolled her eyes and kept trotting deeper into the woods.
‘Sasha, freeze.’
I heard leaves rustling ahead. It was an animal, something large but not predatory.
‘There’s a deer ahead. Care to go for a hunt?’
‘Yes, please!’
We raced into the trees after the deer. I’d never hunted with a female at my side. We wove through the trees, herding the deer back and forth toward each other, tiring it out.
Finally, the deer stumbled. I launched forward and pounced on it.
Sasha came in from the side bit down on the poor animal’s throat.
It squealed and struggled but quickly weakened and bled out.
I grabbed the deer in my jaws and threw it over my back.
‘What are you doing?’
‘This deer will make a great meal. There’s a kitchen back at the bungalow.’
We padded back to the bungalow and I left the deer on the porch while we showered and changed.
Sasha sat in a wicker chair while I skinned and cut up the deer, her hands cupped around a mug of fresh coffee.
“What do you miss most about our timeline?” I asked, making conversation.
“I miss school. I love my dorm and my friends. I feel like since I started that work study, I haven’t seen them in forever.”
“I’ll make sure you get plenty of time with them when we get back.” I winked at her.
When the deer meat was prepared, we headed into the kitchen. I roasted venison in the oven while Sasha chopped up vegetables.
“Are you ready to get back to your life?” she asked.
“Yes. After being here and seeing how this Lucas’s life went, I want to return. I want to get back to work and focus on my career goals again.”
“That’s right, with the Northern Library project on hold, you’ll need to find work again. You’re a slacker right now.”
I shot a sideways look at Sasha. She laughed and stuck her tongue out at me.
“I’d still like to be head of the Royal Engineers. Now that I know the kind of man Stone really is, I know I can outperform him. Besides, I’m sure Xander and Lena will help me out.”
Sasha shook her head. “You wouldn’t want them to help you.”
“I wouldn’t?” I arched an eyebrow at her.
“No, Lucas, you wouldn’t. I know you too well. You want to work for what you get in life. If Xander and Lena in our reality gave you preferential treatment, you’d never be satisfied.”
I smirked and nodded. She was right. She knew me too well.
“Are there any more current projects in the capital in our timeline?”
“None that I recall. The Northern Library was the closest project I could get at the time.”
With the food cooking, Sasha and I moved to the couch and sat together waiting for the timer to go off.
Sasha sighed and looked at her lap. “So, I’ll go back to school and you’ll go to some other part of the realm to work?”
I covered Sasha’s hands with my own. “We don’t know that.”
“You could get sent as far away as Eliza and Jared, and I’d rarely get to see you.”
I smirked. “Sasha, we’ve been following each other through timelines. Do you really think that we can’t make a relationship work across the realm from each other?”
Sasha smiled lightly and nodded.
“No matter what the future holds, we will figure it out,” I assured her.
