Chapter 1027: Chapter 90 : A Dark Prophecy

*Lucas*

I watched the way Morianne gripped her walking stick. She held it tightly, keeping it close to her body, but she never leaned on it. Even when she was walking, the stick had tapped along beside her but she wasn’t using it like a cane. It was just a prop.

Sasha was onto something.

If I could snatch her walking stick away, maybe Sasha could get her powers back. Maybe, if I challenged her and brought everyone else’s attention to the walking stick, she’d be forced to admit it. The guards could get her to turn it over.

“No matter,” Xander said. “You’re going to be detained and held in a prison cell until you change your mind.”

Morianne opened her mouth to protest.

The throne room doors burst open.

Xander jumped to his feet. “What is the meaning of this!?”

A tremble shot through Sasha, and I glared at The Immortal as he strode into the throne room like he was the king himself.

Behind him, I recognized the robes and crests of several members of the Lycaon Church. Based on their crests, they were all high-ranking officials.

This wasn’t good.

I grabbed Sasha’s hand and pulled her closer to me. If The Immortal was here, there was only one thing he was after, and I wasn’t going to let that happen.

“What is he doing here?” she muttered.

“Nothing good. Don’t worry, I won’t let him do anything to you.”

“Explain your intrusion immediately!” Xander demanded in a harsh, kingly voice.

“My apologies, Your Majesty, but we barely got here in time. I am here to stop you from returning the destroyer’s powers to her... before it is too late.”

“The destroyer?” Sasha asked.

“Who are you?” Xander asked, narrowing his eyes.

“Does it matter? He’s been trying to kill Sasha in every timeline. Just arrest him already!” I pointed at him and glared.

“This is The Immortal you told us about?” Lena asked. She moved closer to her husband, a united force to protect Sasha and me.

“I am here to request that you turn Sasha over to my custody.”

“That’s never going to happen,” Lena insisted.

“On what grounds?” Xander asked.

I hugged Sasha closer to me. These creeps would have to get through a lot of us in order to get to Sasha.

I knew The Immortal was powerful, but Lena had the Moon Goddess herself on her side. The Immortal couldn’t possibly be more powerful than that, could he?

“The two of you have no idea what you’ve gotten into. You don’t know how dangerous she is or what will happen if she returns to her own timeline.”

“Well, if you’re so certain she’s a threat that only you can handle, explain the situation to us,” Xander said. He held his arms out to the sides.

The Immortal sighed. He motioned to one of the church officials. “Tell them.”

The church official stepped forward and opened a large, leather-bound tome. The pages were yellow with age, and I could smell the mildew from across the room.

How long had that book rotted in some ancient temple or underground crypt?

“We have here an extensive prophecy, laid out by Dark King Lycaon himself,” the official explained.

I caught Xander and Lena exchanging a look. Fortunately, they didn’t look convinced.

“Long ago, Lycaon predicted that a dream dancer would bring the Dark Realm to ruin. She would appear and unravel the threads of time, destroying us all.”

As he spoke, the drama filled his voice and he raised his hand into the air.

Lena scoffed. “Put that soggy old book away. The prophecies of Lycaon aren’t recognized here. Do you really think Sasha is the first dream dancer to be born since he ‘prophesied’ that? How do you know it is Sasha the one that he spoke of?”

“It doesn’t matter,” The Immortal insisted. “She’s a dream dancer. I will destroy every dream dancer ever born if it means keeping this prophecy from coming true.”

Sasha shuddered in my grasp.

“Bringing this prophecy to us changes nothing. Dark King Lycaon was treacherous. His words are not to be trusted,” Lena announced, putting her hands on her hips.

“Blasphemy!” one of the church officials cried.

“Dark King Lycaon was an enemy of the Moon Goddess. If the Church is ready to renounce her, then please, keep sticking to your prophecies.”

A hush settled over the church officials.

I caught the satisfied smirk on Lena’s lips. Despite the fanaticism the Church of Lycaon had toward the Dark King, they couldn’t renounce the Moon Goddess entirely. It was true blasphemy, and the Church would lose all credibility and power.

“As I thought. Since Lycaon was an enemy of the Moon Goddess, his prophecies cannot be trusted. How do you know that it is not a fake prophecy intended to bring about the very ruin he claims to be trying to avoid?”

“Why would the Dark King lead us down a direction that would destroy the Dark Realm?” The Immortal asked.

“Why would he ever betray the Moon Goddess in the first place? No one can truly know the mind of a treacherous king.”

“You speak of what you do not know!” The Immortal argued.

Some of the church officials didn’t look too sure anymore.

“Are you standing there, willing to declare war on the monarchy? Are you willing to stand against the current Dark King, descendant of Lycaon, and the Moon Goddess?” Lena pointed to herself as she spoke. “If you are, then you will all be considered traitors to your country, to the realm, and to your faith!”

“Maybe we should... find another approach,” one of the officials suggested.

The Immortal snarled. “No! We came for the girl and we aren’t leaving without her. I will not let Lycaon’s prophecy come to pass.”

Sasha’s arms tightened around me. I could feel her panic and worry as tensions rose. It was obvious that this little meeting was headed in the direction of a battle. I couldn’t see any way out of this without a fight breaking out.

Even though they had The Immortal, I was still betting that with Xander, Lena, and all the Royal Guards, we’d have the upper hand.

How desperate was this immortal being?

“I’m growing impatient with these prophecies and nonsense. Guards, come in here and detain these church officials and this priestess. They are traitors to the Crown,” Xander called.

He glanced over his shoulder at me. I nodded and stepped away from Sasha.

“Don’t get involved in this, Sasha. Without your powers, you’re too vulnerable.”

She nodded and backed behind the throne.

“You fools! Don’t you see? She is a danger to everything we’ve built here.” The Immortal pointed to Sasha as guards closed in around them.

“You’re not winning this fight,” Xander insisted.

“Oh, you haven’t even seen what I’m capable of!” The Immortal roared, and he launched himself at the guards.

Immediately, the church officials pulled out weapons and began to fight.

Xander snarled and threw off his shirt. In the blink of an eye, he shifted and went straight toward The Immortal.

I noticed Morianne moving to the edge of the fight like she was going to use it as a distraction to get away.

“Not if I can help it!” I pulled my shirt off.

“Sasha, stay behind me!” Lena ran up to Sasha and pulled her behind her.

She stood ready to protect Sasha from anyone who got too close.

I caught Lena’s eye for a moment and nodded. I trusted her to protect Sasha against these lunatics.

It wasn’t the church officials or The Immortal I was worried about. It was Morianne. She was the one who had the key to Sasha’s powers.

“Go, Lucas, I’ll keep Sasha safe. Don’t let The Immortal or Morianne escape!” Lena called to me.

I nodded and shifted. I lunged right into the fight, breaking through a wall of church officials.

They cried out and toppled to the ground like dominoes.

Did The Immortal really think he had an army with these churchgoers?

I swiped one across the face with a paw. He screamed and covered his face, writhing around on the floor.

I grabbed the arm of another official, clamping my jaws closed on his muscles. He shrieked and tried to pull away. I shook his arm until he dropped his knife. Blood dripped from his arm onto the stone floor.

I released him and he fell on his ass, cradling his arm and whimpering.

It was an easy fight, but I doubted The Immortal would let it stay easy. He had powers of his own, too.

Some of the church officials ran toward the throne room door.

I jumped over the fight and went to the throne room door. No one was getting out of here.

I stood guard at the door while the Royal Army and Xander rounded up the church officials.

Suddenly, The Immortal roared and burst out of the fight. He swiped his arm through the air and wiped out several Royal Guards.

Zander growled and launched at The Immortal. With a flick of the wrist, Xander was tossed to the side like a ragdoll.

“Xander!” Lena’s cry came over the fighting.

I snarled and pawed at the ground, ready to attack The Immortal from behind.

Xander jumped to his feet and shook it off. I breathed a quick sigh of relief as he recovered and got back into the fight.

‘Lucas.’

Sasha’s voice in my head was unexpected. I snapped my eyes in her direction. She was still safe behind Lena. No one had gotten to her yet.

I’d marked her several nights ago, but she hadn’t mind-linked me before. I didn’t have time to revel in the closeness I felt having her connected to me like that.

‘Lucas, The Immortal is too strong. The soldiers and Xander are no match for him,’ Sasha told me.

‘I know, I’m watching the battle, too.’

‘I can stop The Immortal,’ she said.

‘How?’

A sweeping wave of energy cut through the throne room. It knocked all the Royal Guards, The Immortal, and Xander against the far wall.

I snarled, seeing the gemstone in Morianne’s walking stick glow. It was impossible to tell who Morianne was there to support, if anyone. She seemed to be working on her own.

‘Get me that stick, Lucas! I can get my power back and stop The Immortal,’ Sasha insisted in my mind.

Right... I could get the staff back from Morianne. She was focused on the battle, and no one was watching me.

I looked into the hallway and nodded at the guards. They rushed to the throne room door and closed it. I knew they’d barricade it and prevent our enemies from getting out.

Licking my lips, I stalked toward Morianne as she sent another sweeping wave through the battle.

This would be too easy.
