Hearing Mira’s response, Bruce’s eyes opened wide with shock, his hands trembling and shaking as he gathered the paper bundle and stashed it back in his bag. Then after a short pause, he muttered, 「Now that I think about it, it always fell apart once we got this far…」

There had been plenty of adventurers willing to hear Bruce’s request, but they would all start to hesitate and eventually turn him down once they began discussing the reward, and now, he hung his head in frustration, finally knowing the reason for that.

「Ah… I mean, usually it’s far easier to convince adventurers with monetary compensation. There’s always a right price for everything.」

She did her best to not insinuate that his research was useless, as he was still a member of the Tower of Summoning, but still brought up the most common form of rewards. Hearing that, Bruce began nodding to himself, saying, 「I see…so that’s how it works,」 and then took out something else from his bag.

「Then how much do people usually give for something like this?」

Now that he knew that most people worked for money, Bruce asked the next logical question, the amount. He had never been involved with requests like that before, so he did not know how much to offer for people to accept.

And this time, Mira was of little help.

「Oh… I wonder how much…」

It dawned on her that she had never really taken any requests from the Union before, so she did not know the going rates for adventurers. It was true that she was officially recognized as an A-rank adventurer, and had the nickname of the Spirit Queen, but in reality, she was completely disconnected from how adventurers worked.

「Do you think five million would be good enough?」

Bruce began rummaging through the smaller bag he had taken out while muttering that.

「Five…million..?」

Mira was stunned hearing that sum being mentioned so casually. She did not know how much requests usually paid out, but she could tell that was an extraordinary sum considering how simple the task was.

While she struggled to know what to say in return, Bruce misunderstood her silence.

「It’s not enough then? That’s half of what I have on me, so I thought it was a good starting point…」

Then he began to mumble, 「Maybe eight million would be better…」 casually increasing the sum even more, finally prompting Mira to step in.

「Forget about it for a moment. I’m a fellow summoner, so I’ll help you either way.」

She decided to switch topics that way, which delighted Bruce and he happily thanked her for accepting. But then, he went back to muttering about the reward, this time wondering, 「Should I pay in advance then, or wait until later…」 so Mira had to interject again.

「No, let’s hold out on that for now. We should look up the usual rates in the Union first, and then decide on the amount.」

Accepting a reward so far above the market prices was an enticing offer, but Mira restrained herself and chose to be more honorable, suggesting they go to the Union to learn from someone who knew more about that.

Bruce had mentioned five million was half of the money he was carrying, so it was easy to conclude he was a wealthy man, but that still did not justify taking advantage of him, especially considering what could happen in the future. Mira wanted to set a good precedent for the next time they met later on.

「I see… That does sound like a good idea.」

He decided to accept her suggestion, not disputing it as he still remembered all the other times he was rejected. Then, he suggested they return to the Union to figure that out once they were done eating, and he focused on his meal in a good mood after that.

As they agreed, they went to the Union after eating, walking alongside each other like good friends, a stark contrast from how they left around an hour before, with Bruce looking like he was kidnapping Mira. That caused some stir amongst the people who had been there the entire time.

But the two paid little attention to that, heading straight for the bulletin board with the requests.

「Hmm, 20,000 Rils for guarding a farm for a day…」

「And hunting the monsters roaming around the city nets you 3000 Rils for each one defeated…」

They started with the most basic requests, meant for novice adventurers. Those were mainly put up by a single person, and a few by groups of them, all with targets really close to the city.

「Oh, 300,000 Rils to identify a monster that recently started nesting in the forest. And they want it done as soon as possible.」

「10 kilos of Armorscale Lizard carapaces are sold for 200,000 Rils, interesting.」

As they moved up in difficulty, the reward amounts also increased. Those were still mainly posted by individual people, but this time they were mostly merchants or artisans, instead of farmers and regular people. There were also a handful of requests put up directly by the Union itself.

「Oh, now that’s a big step up. A million and a half to destroy a monster lair.」

「Two million to escort and assist a search team. It doesn’t specify what or where they are searching, but I guess that’s similar enough to what I want.」

They had reached the section with requests for Rank C adventurers, which was considered the starting point for being recognized as a high-level adventurer. The requests were more dangerous, but the rewards were all above a million as well. There also had to be requests exclusive for the higher ranks, A and B, but those were not displayed publicly on the bulletin board.

「Hey, you there, got a moment?」

Mira spotted a random Union employee nearby and cornered him to ask about that. As he explained, requests for rank B adventurers and above were all kept in a separate file, as some requests contained sensitive information that could only be divulged to high ranking adventurers.

All that secrecy made Mira curious about it, so she asked to see that file. Even if she was a complete novice when it came to requests, she was still famous as the Spirit Queen and was a rank A adventurer, so she had every right to look through them.

(Now this…this is the stuff dreams are made of…)

Ten million Rils to obtain a Full Moon Crystal Flower. Twenty Million Rils to sink a band of pirates terrorizing the nearby sea. Thirty Million to track down and defeat a magic beast. Fifty million to investigate a newly found dungeon, and so on. There was a lot of variety amongst those requests, but they all carried a high degree of difficulty.

But in exchange, all of the rewards were on a whole different level as well. Someone who could complete those requests could easily end up becoming a billionaire. And according to the Union’s employee, there were even more requests, only available for a small number of adventurers.

The requirements to access those requests included becoming sufficiently notorious—like Mira meeting the Spirit King—leading a large and successful guild, or simply being exceptionally talented.

「I see.」

Mira was finally learning about the types of lives led by adventurers, and just as she had thought before, it was the type of life she always dreamed about.

「Actually, there’s something else I’d like to consult with you about…」

Now that she had a rough idea of the standard prices, the next step was to figure out how much Bruce’s request would be worth. Since she had already gotten hold of a Union employee, she decided to ask him—wanting his opinion on how much someone would typically need to pay for a spellcaster capable of casting a high-level spell, with the condition that the caster would only need to use the spell without engaging in any combat.

「You mean…」

Hearing that, the employee glanced over to Bruce, whose request had become a bit infamous around there, as it had been rejected so many times already. As the employee connected the dots, he grew visibly surprised, realizing why Mira and Bruce had returned together to the Union.

「Learning to use high level spells takes a considerable amount of skill, effort, and time practicing. But there’s next to no danger, so I’d say half a million Rils would be a fair price.」

Because everyone knew of that request, they had already calculated that amount beforehand, so the employee was able to give a quick response.

「Hmm…I see, that does sound about right.」

Mira was satisfied with that response, so she thanked the employee and went back to regroup with Bruce, telling him, 「From what I’ve seen of the other prices, the reward for your request would be priced around half a million Rils,」 acting like it was her who had done all the work calculating that.
