Chapter 189: Broken Walls, The Wolves Have Found Us

Chapter 189: Chapter 189: Broken Walls, The Wolves Have Found Us

Yet the horses were tied to each other with ropes, making it impossible to flee quickly.

Yan Wanqing could only have the team split into squads of six, forming five squads in total.

The noises behind them grew gradually louder.

Li Chengyuan, looking between Yan Wanqing’s armpits, saw only pairs of eyes of various colors, which startled her so much that she hurriedly drew her head back in.

These ferocious beasts were all attracted by the smell of blood in the air.

Screams of agony soon came from behind them.

Yan Wanqing pursed her lips, casting aside the screams.

"Remember, these are all because of your deceased soldiers," Yan Wanqing gritted her teeth and said, "They should have died for their country on the battlefield, but instead died here in this desolate wilderness because of you!"

If it hadn’t been for Li Chengyuan causing so much trouble, they should have reached the village by now, where it was safe and no one would have lost their life.

Li Chengyuan wanted to argue, but a mouthful of sand stopped her, forcing her to swallow her anger and keep quiet.

Yan Wanqing thought she was reflecting on herself, making him feel that his words might have been too harsh.

However, having Li Chengyuan reflect a bit wasn’t a bad idea.

But Yan Wanqing overlooked one thing, not everyone has a heart of flesh.

Clearly, Li Chengyuan didn’t.

So, by the time Yan Wanqing led Li Chengyuan running madly, the other four teams had disappeared without a trace, leaving only their group of five.

The predators behind them had already been left far behind.

Yet Yan Wanqing and his party dared not let their guard down.

"Look, there’s a house over there," Li Chengyuan suddenly exclaimed.

The group followed her gaze and could vaguely make out the shape of a house.

"Let’s go check it out." If it was a house, they must be close to a village.

The group, filled with hope, but luck wasn’t on their side so soon; upon reaching it, they found it was but ruins.

"What are we going to do? Are we going to die here?" cried a younger soldier in the group.

He was young and easily overwhelmed, and now he suddenly spoke out, evidently having held it in for a long while as tears circled his eyes.

"Don’t talk nonsense; we can surely find a way out," said an older soldier, glancing at Yan Wanqing’s expression and patting the younger soldier on the shoulder.

The younger soldier sobbed, covering his mouth with the back of his hand softly whimpering.

"Stop crying, or I won’t be polite anymore," the elder one, getting anxious as he saw him still acting childishly, feared that Yan Wanqing would blame them at this moment.

The younger soldier was so frightened that he covered his mouth, daring not to make a sound.

Yan Wanqing waved her hand, saying unconcernedly.

"It’s okay, let’s go inside and have a look; there might be an unexpected discovery." The group dismounted.

It was a rather shabby little house.

The doors and windows were quite dilapidated.

But the house had a bed and a chair, it seemed to be intentionally left for passersby to rest.

Li Chengyuan went in and sat on the chair.

"At least it’s a shelter," she said, "Let’s rest here tonight."

Yan Wanqing used the Fire Starter to light the remaining candles in the house to get a better look at its interior.

Not to mention the draughty walls, the beams of the house were nearly falling apart.

If they encountered even a moderately large predator, the structure might not hold even for a short time.

"This place isn’t sturdy enough; if we encounter predators, we’ll have no choice but to await our end," Yan Wanqing disapprovingly said.

"How could there be so many predators!" Li Chengyuan retorted discontentedly, "In a hundred miles, this is the only house visible. It at least has a door, a bed, and walls. The temperature is dropping, and our clothes are thin. If the temperature falls completely, people will die anyway."

As she spoke, Li Chengyuan saw the others wavering and said again, "Later we can take turns keeping watch. If anything stirs, we can immediately mount our horses and leave, and it should be enough."

The young soldier, moved by Li Chengyuan’s words, timidly raised his hand, "Your subordinate thinks Princess Yaochi’s words make sense. With the currently severe sandstorm and our loss of direction, rather than blundering around in the desert, it’s better to stay put and respond to whatever comes."

Seeing someone support her, Li Chengyuan immediately looked at Yan Wanqing, "In any case, I’m not leaving. If you want to go, then go on your own. If you want to die, no one is stopping you."

This Yan Wanqing always seems to want to contradict her.

How annoying!

Yan Wanqing had chosen to travel with Li Chengyuan for her safety, and now she was clearly committed to sticking with this dilapidated house. Yan Wanqing had no other options.

"Then get the horses settled. If we encounter any special circumstances later, we will evacuate immediately," Yan Wanqing said.

The young soldier immediately nodded and hurried to attend to the horses.

He then took a blanket from the remaining bundles, but Li Chengyuan took them all and wrapped herself up.

The young soldier originally wanted to give one to Yan Wanqing but, seeing the situation, he frowned, appearing troubled.

Yan Wanqing, seeing this from a distance, simply waved her hand dismissively.

She didn’t want to hear Li Chengyuan’s voice at all right now.

If it was possible to keep this person from speaking, then better to keep silent.

She had her Inner Strength to keep her warm and didn’t care whether she had a blanket or not.

Yan Wanqing hugged her long sword, leaning against a column, pretending to sleep while the sound of the wind whistling through the broken window filled her ears.

The first watch was taken by the young soldier and the old veteran.

The middle watch was taken by the remaining soldier.

Finally, it would be Yan Wanqing and Li Chengyuan.

But Yan Wanqing had never counted on her; when it was their turn, she would keep watch by herself.

Once everything was arranged, the young soldier and the old veteran gathered scraps of wood from the house that could burn, lit a bonfire for warmth, and sat beside it to warm themselves.

The first half of the night passed relatively smoothly. The real challenge was the latter half.

The young soldier and the old veteran chatted idly, safely passing the first half of the night.

Inside the house, the bonfire burned while the exterior walls blocked most of the wind. Compared to the other teams whose whereabouts were unknown, the young soldier felt they were blessed by the heavens.

"I’m not sleepy yet. I can keep going," the young soldier urged the old veteran to go to sleep.

The old veteran was about to wake the middle watch soldier but was stopped by the young soldier: "I can handle it, don’t wake him. He was exhausted during the day."

Seeing the young soldier so sensible, the old veteran smiled, "Don’t be too tough. If you get sleepy, just wake him up."

The young soldier nodded, "I will."

Then the old veteran went to sleep.

The young soldier prodded the fire with a stick, making it brighter.

After an indeterminate amount of time, Yan Wanqing suddenly woke from a light sleep.

She opened her bleary eyes and noticed many pairs of eyes surrounding the house.

Wolves!

Many wolves!

The pack of wolves had found them!

Yan Wanqing quickly rose from the ground.

At that moment, the young soldier on guard duty had unknowingly slumped next to the bonfire with drool trailing down his cheek.

She frowned and knocked loudly on the column. "Everyone up!"

The old veteran was the first to rise. Once he saw the situation around him, he quickly woke the soldier beside him, then kicked the young soldier on the ground.

Startled awake, the young soldier rubbed his eyes, bewildered.

"What’s wrong?"

The old veteran glared at him, "What kind of watch are you keeping, you fell asleep!"

The young soldier subconsciously looked outside and locked eyes with a wolf. Any trace of sleepiness instantly disappeared.

"Wolves! The wolves are here!" shouted the young soldier, but the old veteran quickly covered his mouth. "Be quiet."

So many wolves!

The young soldier’s tears welled up.

He was still young, and he didn’t want to die—
