Probably my favorite novel. Took me quite a few days to get out of it after i caught up and still think about it even after having read like 5 other 1500+ novels while stacking chapters on it. Very highly recommend reading this. power system is fresh, characters are well written, Peak action scenes, and overall story is fluent. Definitely deserves rank 1 spot.
New, second edit: this site periodically scrubs this novel of any slightly negative reviews.
the ratings here, at least for this novel, are not trustworthy.
my review was removed again, for the same reason, a day ago. Inappropriate? Nonsense. I guess I'll leave this review at 4 stars so it doesn't get taken down again.
First edit:Three days ago, I left a review of this novel. Just my personal opinion. I happen to get a notification that my review was taken down by some kind of admin for inappropriate content. That's really strange. It's almost as if the admin is taking down even slightly negative reviews on their favorite novel. How unfair.
My review is half a star to reflect my feelings to the lame site admin.
here is my my actual review for those interested-
Stars: 3
Hmm, I think this novel could be good but i found it hard to get through the first dozen chapters. The power system seems great so far, and I generally like novels of this genre. i guess this novel just couldn't click with me. What a shame.
If someone likes anime then this is a perfect entry into reading webnovels. This novel is almost perfect except for one thing. The amount of filler it has. To be honest the filler is also quite good that some times you don't even notice its filler but the latest arcs almost have 200 chapters or pure filler but to be honest I don't mind wasting my time I like seeing them do fun stuff but if thats not for you then that might be a deal breaker.
I thoroughly enjoyed reading Shadow Slave for 2000+ chapters now—the world-building is rich, the characters are compelling, and the system is well-defined. However, if you've read deeply, you’ll start to notice some glaring narrative inconsistencies.
1. The Role of Government :The story sidelines governments, which feels unrealistic. Given the sheer scale of the Nightmare Spell emerging during a global dark wars, powerful nations would have been the first to explore it, amass data, and dominate the early nightmare expeditions. It's hard to believe they wouldn't produce any Sovereigns. Either governments collapsed completely and feudal clan-like structures rose, or they evolved into coalitions. A single, centralized government feels implausible under those global conditions.
2. Neglect of Technology : Humanity is known for advancing weapons and destructive technologies, especially during world wars. The lack of meaningful technological development or integration into fighting nightmares contradicts this trait. It makes no sense that researchers made no headway despite the existential threat.
3. Underuse of Utility-Based Awakened : Even if humanity failed to develop effective weapons, it would logically invest in utility-based Awakened—especially Saints—to build infrastructure, create artifacts, enhance agriculture, and support logistics. The near-total absence of such individuals, especially within the government, feels like a major oversight.
4. Flawed Premise of Sovereign Suppression : The idea that existing Sovereigns will automatically hunt down anyone attempting the Fourth Nightmare is flawed. The Dream Realm is vast and largely untraceable. How would Sovereigns know when or where someone is attempting ascension? Saints could easily hide in the waking world, conduct secret expeditions to lost continents or even bind to citadels in death zones to increase their power, or ascend within dangerous zones like the Nightmare Desert or Stormsea—areas even Sovereigns avoid. Take the House of Night, for instance. If their Saints ascend in secret, who could stop them? With top-tier diviners and Stormsea as their domain, they could hide their existence and protect their citadels with ease.
This logic extends to other Death Zones as well—if someone ascends in those vast, deadly regions, it’s neither easy nor sensible for Sovereigns to hunt them down.
I love it! Sunny and Neph I hope they get married and have kids at the end of the novel. The story is so unique specially the real of Sunny. It's like Sukuna
You will NOT regret reading ts. Very unique exposition/introduction, the story never gets boring, every single character is great, the power system is amazing, the MC is goated ASF, very interesting lore, female characters are great too. The MC is VERY likable and make smart decisions and learns from his mistakes. INSANE world building and well thought out characters. 10/10 Ts so peak bro😭🫡
I want to give this a perfect score but don't know what to say.
Daddy Nephis in Bunny Suit?
Mommy Sunny in Maid Outfit?
Daughter Mordret in Swimsuit? ok this is making me cringe hard
The fact that this has kept someone like me, who has a terrible attention span, engaged for almost 2 months at this point says A LOT about how great this novel is. I've read a lot of manga and watched a ton of anime as well but none of them are of the same caliber as Shadow Slave. G3 the goat
I fuking love this. Even though this is my first webnovel I never regretted starting it tbh. Ss is the reason I got into the world of webnovels. And i started reading it cause of a yt shorts lol
This novel is really great
I as actually going to give 4 stars , i read till the end of third nm and will probably stack till the end . 1 star reduced because first 300 chs, I dropped it nearly ten times, seriously disappointed with forgotten shore that everyone was hyping up, but hey, it was straight up peak after 300, I enjoyed all arcs after that, so it is difficult to decide the rating.
.
Now actual review
.The best part of the ss is its fantastic world building and lore drops.
The second highlight was the mc sunless; I really enjoy development, I do not like pedophile harem mcs like rudeus, so sunny was perfect for me.
.
The power system is amazing and detailed, and nightmares are really hell difficulty. I would have enjoyed it more if they focus more on sovereigns and other houses when Sunny becomes master, but I guess the genre is survival and action.
.Side characters are also good, though not as good as the MC (which is obvious), but they still have their own goals and motives. Nephis and Cassie are baddies.
.
even if it was a bit dissapointing I really enjoyed some parts so 5 stars from me .
