Chapter 60: Chapter SIXTY

- KILLIAN -

"Liam, I sent you a file with some codes. It’s a lead on the whereabouts of the murderer. Do your research." I say, standing in front of the table in my office while redoing my tie. I shouldn’t have this conversation here, school is not a safe place to talk about something this delicate but here I am with no care in the world, leaving my phone on loud speaker on my desk while on a call with my brother.

"Noted. I’ll get back to you in the morning." Liam says.

A grin masquerades my lips. Good. I just finished knoting my tie and I stick it underneath the inner layer suit then button my tuxedo. "That will be all for now."

"Enjoy your dinner." Liam utters. Even without looking at him physically, I can see the sly grin forming across his face and hear the mock in his words. I abhor interactions and I hate school celebrations. Apparently, I have to participate with a smile or at least show interest.

"You won’t be laughing for long." I scoff. He bursts out laughing.

"You sure? Because I probably will send a media team just to sneak photos of you in that party. I need to see that frown, it will be peak blackmail content."

That irks me. It’s a kids party. Thinking about it a second time makes me cringe. It’s almost as if my job tonight is to babysit a bunch of teenagers.

I turn and walk to my desk, grabbing my phone. "I look majestic. Your media team should worry about keeping their heads intact while taking my photos. School ground doesn’t mean no murder."

"Relax брат. Life shouldn’t always be taken seriously." Liam sighs. He sounds cheery and comfortable. Too comfortable.

[ Translation: брат means brother ]

"Remind me why I’m here and you’re handling things over there, again?"

"Because I wouldn’t have anybody killed."

My jaw tightens. "Я не уничтожаю семью."

[ Translation: I don’t annihilate family.]

"В последний раз, я слышал это заявление, мужчины упала с балкона." Liam responds.

[ Translation: The last time I heard that statement, a man’s head fell down the balcony. ]

I take a deep breath then exhale. That was a one time thing and he deserved it. No one needed to know what that man did or they would’ve gone after his family. His innocent family. "Consider it a tamper of mercy. Delivering justice without severe consequences."

"Anything to make you sleep well at night."

God! Sometimes I wonder how he’s still alive. "Okay, bye."

"Love you, Killian."

I make a face. "I’ll pretend I didn’t hear that." I hear smooches and hang up before Liam does something else that makes me cringe even further. I dip my phone in the inner pocket of my tuxedo. I guess it’s time to head to the party.

My hand crawls lower and I pull my drawer out and I stick a finger underneath. The wooden plate barricading what’s hidden beneath the normal professor looking drawer shifts to a side. There lays my flash drive. I squeeze my hand around it and dip it in the breast pocket of my inner suit. It’s time to head to the hall.

There’s someone I really need to see. Someone I briefed with my presence before coming to this office. She’s wearing my gift. A content grin forms on my face. It fits her very well.

I make my way out of my office and lock the door. Now I’m heading back to the hall where the dinner is being held. For what it’s worth, as much as I dislike gatherings, getting to watch her will be the highlight of my night.

I push the door open and make my way to the assembly of professors. It’ll be like I never left in the first place. I don’t indulge in prolonged conversations with my ’colleagues’ so I highly doubt any of them will notice my absence nor presence.

"Killian, you’re back." Lorelei’s voice dulled my prior excitement. Then there’s her.

I grit my teeth.

"Hello Lorelei." I didn’t bother to sound excited in the least to see her. My tone was professional.

She walks to me with a glass of- I look at her hand. I don’t know what it is but she’s holding a champagne flute.

"You look," She studies me from head to toe with her eyes. "Breathtaking." Lorelei giggles.

I know.

"Thank you." I say to her. From the smile on her face, I can tell she expects a compliment too. "You look quite stunning." I did not lie. Lorelei is beautiful. She’s just not my type, in the sense that I’m not interested in her and never will be. Maybe if I actually felt something like a mustard seed of affection toward her, I wouldn’t find her presence so infuriating.

What is it with blondes and getting on my nerves?

"Why, thank you." She says to me. I can hear the pride in her tongue.

If only she knew what I was thinking, she wouldn’t be smiling.

I avert my gaze from her to scan the room.

Where is Hazel? I can’t find her.

"If you’d excuse me, Lorelei," I say politely, ensuring she adjusted before stepping in front of her. "I have somewhere to be." I flash a grin.

Her face flushes. "Take your time." For a woman, she sure has her cute perks. Too bad she’s wasting it on the wrong person.

I sigh. My eyes wander around the hall again. There’s the blonde man I hate. I scoff. Who even let him in? He’s not a second year, neither is he a worker for this university.

He’s probably a sponsor. One of them at least but that doesn’t matter.

If he’s here, Hazel should be here too. Then why can’t I find her? This is so infuriating. She was here the last time before I left.

I take a deep breath and exhale gently. I shouldn’t get agitated yet. There’s no where she would’ve gone that she won’t be found in this confined room. That is if she’s still within these walls. I hope so. Looking for her outside this hall is way more problematic because then, she could be anywhere.

"Darling!" A hand lands on my shoulder. My first instinct was to tackle the person to the ground but I halted the urge. "It’s nice seeing you here. I wondered where you had gone." Kate says, ticking her fingers up my back.

She doesn’t care that we’re outside. "That’s a bit unprofessional, don’t you think?" I question with a blank expression on my face.

Kate laughs. Her laugh is husky and low. "Oh with how carried away everyone is, I doubt anyone would notice the two of us."

She’ll be so surprised.

A satin silver shawl wraps around my shoulder and pulls me backwards to her body. "I’m not letting you out of my sight, honey." Kate giggles. Her movements are wavering and unstable like one I’m very well accustomed with.

She’s drunk.

I can’t have her seen like this in this place. Especially not in the prying eyes of professors. I care about my job because of what I need it to accomplish but I know I can’t be fired despite any allegations, I don’t know about her though. The upper hand I have doesn’t mean I shouldn’t be careful with public student interactions.

I take the shawl off my body and pull her aside to a much quieter corner.

"You’re drunk." I raise a brow.

Kate tip toes and leans her head up to meet mine. I can feel her lips linger around my chin. "Very." She laughs into my skin then tilts her head backwards.

Her body collapses in my arms. If I let her go, I fear she’ll fall.

"And also very high." Kate belches.

My jaw tightens. It is now I perceive her breath. She reeks of marijuana.

My blood boils. Who the fuck is distributing marijuana?! I own a drug cartel yet I find this highly inappropriate. Speak of the irony.

Now I know I need to find Hazel before she has one. That girl is not quite brainy when it comes to making certain decisions concerning herself.

Plus, if sane Hazel is wild, I wonder how easy it would be to overpower her and force her to do something when she’s vulnerable.

"I’m calling someone to take you home." I say to Kate firmly, trapping her fists with one hand. I use the other to get my phone out of my suit pocket.

"Oh, no, no, I want to stay with you." Kate struggles to escape my grip to no avail. I’m not listening to her. Does she have any idea what will happen if anyone finds her this way?

Shit. Thinking about this situation makes me want to get to Hazel quickly before anyone else does.

Kate pushes herself to me, pressing her body on mine. I feel her raise her leg up between my thighs. That leaves me rigid.

I hold my phone to my ears once the driver picked. "I need a ride to take me to-" I call my address then call the school address after. "Right now."

"Killian!" Kate gasps. She hits my chest with both fists, forcing me to face her. Her lips are in front of mine. "Kiss me." Kate whispers. She leans further before I could answer.

My eyes widen. That’s when I look up and notice the presence of someone I didn’t know was here. Hazel runs away before I could even move.

Was she watching?

For how long? I don’t want her to have the wrong idea.

A scoff slides in my ears. "Again Killian." Kate sighs. "You’re such a fucking cunt." She whispers softly, disappointed. I stopped her lips from touching mine with two fingers when she leaned up to kiss me.

"A ride will be here soon. Go ho

me. I’ll meet with you shortly." I say to her and let go.

I saw the path Hazel ran to, I just hope she didn’t run far. I’m going after her.
