Chapter 52: Chapter FIFTY TWO

- KILLIAN -

It’s the d-day. The game is finally here and seats are getting occupied by home students and the school professors, guests and the opposing team. Certain board members have their own seats in the stadium and everyone seems to be getting cozy.

I feel better. I’ve been on medication and haven’t done anything stressful for the past week so despite certain minor aches, I’m confident that I’m improving very nicely.

"Got popcorn." Liam says, walking to me. I stared at him with a brow raised. Did I forget to add that I invited him? Not by choice, obviously. Liam wanted to come.

"Need I remind you I’m the coach. I won’t be sitting with you nor will I have time to snack."

"Who said I got them for you?" Liam smirks and puts some popcorn in his mouth. I scoff, looking away.

I ran my eyes around the stadium, hoping to find someone. Certainly one week is enough time. Hazel didn’t text me back but that doesn’t mean I’m backing off.

"Looking for someone?" Liam’s voice slid in my ears, followed by the munching of popcorn.

"Nothing that concerns you." I said, ignoring him.

"Great. In that case, I’ll just pop in that seat over there to view the game." He nudges my shoulder as he walks in front of me, pointing his head in a direction. My body froze as I followed his gaze and my throat clenched. Hazel just walked in there and was preparing to sit down. By her left is Kaiden.

They look so happy and seem to hit it up nicely that I’m jealous. It’s so fucking infuriating knowing she’s out there with another man while ghosting me. Hazel points forward, giggling, and Kaiden looks in that direction. He whispers something to her and she laughs in response. Liam has never seen Hazel before face to face but it’s hard to imagine he just happened to find her coincidentally. I exhaled, trying to avoid thinking about the possibilities of what he did. My eyes drifted to Hazel’s other side. The seat by her right is empty.

"If you’ll excuse me-" He said, moving forward. I clutch my arm around his, holding him back. He leaned closer to me. "Don’t worry brother. I’m here for a purpose. Nothing will happen between them." He winks at me and walks away.

I am not happy with this. It’s not my best moment having my brother and a stranger sandwich the lady I want to be with in a seating arrangement but there’s nothing I can do. Not before the game anyway.

"Coach Killian!" Someone yelled from the front. It’s Liz.

I close my eyes and sigh. I need my head in the game more than anything else.

"Hello Liz. You alright?" I ask, walking to her.

"Never been better!" She smacks my shoulder. On a normal day, I wouldn’t allow that. I’d rather not be touched. I took a step backwards. The girls are prepping for the game and believe me when I say I am impressed with how well Liz trained them.

I went through the game plan and it was impressive.

There was an uproar as the other team made their way into the field. I roll my eyes. The audience of the opposing team sure are overly hyper tonight. My team waltzed out shortly after. The cheering of the crowd doubled but something seemed to be wrong. I felt my body tense a little while watching their stance.

Have they been practicing too much or so late? This doesn’t seem good. A group of cheerleaders made their way out, choreographing to a song they sang with a beat playing.

The girls walked to us.

"Coach Killian!"

"Professor!!"

"Oh goodness, you’re back!"

"We thought you’d miss the game!"

"I did some strength practice."

"Are we going to lose?"

Their voices chorused in my ears all at once causing me to grin. To be honest, I didn’t think I bonded with them long enough to get such grand welcoming but I don’t think they enjoyed their time with Liz. It must be the reason they’re glad to see me.

"Thank you girls. I wouldn’t miss the game for anything in the world." I maintain a half grin. Skipping the game was definitely a thought I contemplated but I wouldn’t have. "And no, we aren’t losing." I answered the last question. I don’t know who asked it nor why.

I sighed and brought my head lower to face them. "I missed practice and I didn’t get to see you ladies train. But you did practice. From the stats, you did good. Who are these people that think they will come to our school and take our trophy?!"

I cringed for a second with the pep talk. Never had I imagined I’d be doing this to motivate a bunch of girls. Girls I barely care about. I stare at the field to see the referee call the players forward.

"Okay ladies, remember your formation and stick to the plan." I said to them. They acknowledged my words with nods and body gestures and darted to the field.

I sat down and kept my eyes on every player on the field. I wonder how this game will go. I can only hope our team wins. Kate is on the field. She’s standing next to the keeper. Great. She’s very good at scoring long distance plus her defense is top tier.

I averted my gaze from her to the bleachers. Hazel is there. She’s definitely cheering. My jaw clenched.

It’s just 90 minutes.

I’ll get to talk to her in ninety minutes. My foot taps the ground impatiently and my fists clench. A dreadfully long ninety minutes.

- HAZEL -

Kaidens arms wrap around my shoulder and he pulls me in for a kiss. I didn’t kiss him because my focus was on the game, but he did. His lips pressed on my cheek.

It’s three minutes to the end of the game and so far, it’s a tie, 1 - 1. Both teams are playing rigidly right now and I had no idea I’d be so invested in soccer like I do now. Especially because my grades depend on this. And my bestie is out there, doing her best.

"WOOOOO GO KATE! GO TEAM! SLAY THIS MATCH!!" I scream with one hand stretched up in the air, waving the flag representing my team while my other hand is curved around my mouth, like a microphone. I’m a million times sure no player on the field is paying attention to anything other than what’s happening on the field but I am showing my support anyway. Along with everyone else sat here.

"You’re really into this, huh?" Kaiden whispers on my skin. That tickles.

"Of course I am. I couldn’t play, but I can cheer." I say to him. My attention is drawn to the field. If my grades didn’t depend on this match, I swear I would give Kaiden more attention but I can’t. Not right now that my mind is torn between this game and something else.

The only thing keeping me sane is the fact that it’s a tie. That is something I’m overly glad about. I look at the time on my watch. But anything can happen in two minutes. I really hope that if something does happen and a team scores, it’ll be ours.

"Right." Kaiden says. I can feel his eyes all over me.

I turn to face him, feeling terrible. "I’m sorry you have to witness this ’ignoring’ side of me."

"Hey, it’s fine. I’m here because I want to be. Also because I want to be with you. I love your concentration. It’s quite sexy to watch."

This makes a half grin form on my face. "And you’re sure you’re not just being patient because of your sister?"

"She’s a terrible player. Let this be between us." He chuckled.

I stared at him for a second. "You know what? No. Nuh-uh. I’m gonna keep this for blackmail."

"Oh really? Be my guest." Kaiden says, playing along with my tease. I giggled.

I’m so glad he’s here. I leaned in to kiss him. He’s given me a lot of support for the past week. I’m so glad I’m getting this cast off sooner. Then we can enjoy our double date. "Thank you for being here." I kissed him again. Kaiden returns the kiss, holding my neck with a firm, yet gentle grip as his tongue dived into my mouth.

He pulled his head back a little and whispered to my face. "Anytime Hazel. I’d do anything for you."

This made me smile. My lips parted to speak but a loud roar cut me short. Everyone rose up and was cheering. I look around in awe, wondering what the cheer was about.

I can’t see the field because of the crowd standing in front of me so I listened to the sports commentator carefully but he was barely audible too. "Know what happened?" I giggle, asking Kaiden. He stood up then sat back down to look at me.

"You won." He said.

My gaze widened. A gasp slipped out of my lips. "Wait really?" I ask. I need to be sure before I get too excited.

"See for yourself." Kaiden says, holding his hand out to me. I dip my fingers in his and before I knew what was happening, Kaiden pulls me up in this tight space and carries me over his shoulder. I screamed, laughing as my thighs land on his shoulder, nearly clapping his head. Kaiden’s arms are tight around my thigh and my waist, supporting my body firmly on his.

We did it. I can’t believe we did it. I ran my eyes around the stadium as Kate and everyone else came together for a group hug while jumping. Now they walked towards the coach. A smile forms on my face.

I guess this means my nothing affects my grades.

Kate screams my name and waves at me. I can barely hear her through the noise but I read her lip movement. I blew a kiss, swinging my hand in the air without hopping like she is. I am on someone. Unless I want us both to collapse on the ground, I’ll pass on letting the excitement get to my head.

My gaze drifted to the rest of the team and ....Killian.

I swallow. My eyes met his for a split second but I could feel the rage from here. I swallow and avert my gaze.

"Do you want me to come down?" I ask at the top of my voice, looking down at Kaiden.

"Do whatever you want, princ

ess. I won’t drop you."

I giggled. This man will soon feel my weight on his shoulders. I wonder if his tongue will change then.
