Chapter 50: Chapter FIFTY

- KILLIAN -

I got in my car and groaned. Gasping for air while laying my back on the seat. I’m in pain. My body is suffering from everything I did today and I can’t begin to talk about the heart ache.

I met her today and at least that calmed me down a bit. The encounter wasn’t really what I expected but it was something. She didn’t really give me an invitation but she spoke to me. That means something because I didn’t expect her to.

A half grin formed on my face. I can’t believe I’m smiling right now when my body is in this state.

I’ll enjoy the chase. I need to win her back. Have to. And I need to do so with no bloodshed. That means I won’t be passing a bullet through the head of some tall blond in the process as tempting as it may be.

I raise my shirt up and groaned. Sighting the blood stained plaster around my body and some uncovered bruises and swells messed with my mind. I can barely move my body without feeling a sting.

Fuck. I should’ve come with a driver. I shouldn’t have come alone but I couldn’t put her at risk by coming with someone.

I can’t trust anyone around me with her especially now. Not even my men. Some of them. At least, till the ruse dies down. Till I’m sure S nor Marino or another psycho is not on my tail.

I raise my hip up slightly and dip my hand in my back pocket to take out my phone. I can’t see Hazel’s room from this part of the hospital so I don’t know if she’s asleep or still with Kaiden.

A sigh escaped my lips. I’m going to text her. I need her to know I’m not here to mess things up again. I actually do care. Despite what I said. I did that to protect her.

I sent Hazel a text when a knock on my window caught my attention. For a second there, my heart skipped a beat and I thought I was dreaming till I heard his voice.

"Back seat, now. You must be delusional to think you can drive." Liam said swinging a knife between his fingers.

He followed me. That little rat.

Why on earth is he playing with a knife in public like it’s a normal thing to do? I wound down. "You’re lucky I don’t go around throwing bullets at the first interruption." I said to him. He stuck his hand inside through the window and opened the door.

"You’re lucky I followed you." Liam leaned lower and supports my arm on his shoulder, raising me up. "Although, seeing your sick ass on a hospital bed would be a sight. Maybe it’ll teach you a lesson."

I chuckled. Liam stretched his hand to the side and pulled the back seat open. He supported me in gently.

"Think you can resume teaching like this?" He asks. I adjust in and leaned my head backwards on the seat.

"I doubt. Requested a sick leave already." I said, sighing with relief.

Liam leaned on the car door. "How long?"

"A week. I need to be there to support the team for this dumb football game." I groan.

He scoffs. A half grin is on his face. "Good luck with having your hands full. You’ll be out of that school soon." He slams the door shut and walks to the front. He gets into the driver’s seat.

The engine started.

At first, getting my work done and leaving was the aim but now, I don’t think I want to leave when I’ve accomplished my duties. Although I can always visit, I’ll miss getting to see her during certain periods or passing by her in the hallway. I close my eyes for a second before letting my eyelids slide open. I took my phone out and stared at the screen, looking at Hazel’s chat. She has seen my message.

There’s no reply yet but I can live with that. I face the top of the car and close my eyes.

"Buckle your seat belt, brother. I would hate to have you wounded more than you already are with my wreckless driving."

"You’re enjoying this, aren’t you?"

"Yup. Very much." Liam laughed, exchanging glances with me through the front mirror.

Fair enough. If I was in his shoes, I’d be having fun too. Liam drove out of the hospital and hit the road. "Where are we headed?" I ask with my eyes closed.

"Someplace you won’t be able to hold a gun or fight." He responded. "Someplace you won’t have a reason to."

I scoff. "Is this some kind of holiday?"

"Maybe."

The end of my lips curled. "Then better make it worth it. Surprise me brother."

"I aim to." Even with my eyes closed, I could tell he drove faster. I really need something to get my mind off the body pain. Maybe I’ll take a break with Liam’s holiday and visit her again. I’ll give her a few days to clear her head. But nothing more.

I can’t stand to be away from her. Not when there’s another male figure in the way.

"So," Liam starts, I didn’t open my eyes nor move to face the front seat. "This girl," He continues. I already know what’s on his mind. The question was long overdue. I’m stunned he waited till now. "Tell me about her. Is she hot?"

"If you even dare glance at her with interest, Liam, I’ll gouge your eyes out."

Liam chuckled. "What do I get for dirty thoughts?"

That made my eyes shoot open. "Don’t even-"

Liam’s laughter echoed. He’s trolling me on purpose. He hasn’t even seen her. I roll my eyes.

"If someone’s got you acting this way, she really must be something." He said. I stared at him through the mirror. A sigh slipped out of my mouth. She is something. I’m just the asshole who didn’t realise it sooner.

Or did I?

"Yeah." I groan, closing my eyes. "She is."

"Don’t give me little information about this girl. Especially since I found out last."

"You’re part of the point five percent of people I know that’s aware. Give me some credit." I cackled.

"Sweet talk me when I drive you, Killian. An accident may happen and you might happen to fall off on the road."

I lean forward and put my hand on his shoulder. "With the way you care about me, it’ll be you falling out of the car." A sly grin formed on my face. Liam locked eyes with me in the mirror and shoved my hand off.

It was quiet between us and I leaned backwards. Something bothers me. "You’re not concerned about the fiancée?" I ask carefully. Knowing Liam, I expected him to judge me. He knows about Kate. They’ve met a couple of times.

"Even if I am, there’s no stopping you. Despite what anyone says, you follow what’s on your mind." True. Smart answer. "Just don’t...." He took a pause to exhale. "Don’t drag anyone down a path they won’t recover from. The way we live is not something normal people are accustomed to."

I swallow. I plan to keep it that way. Even though I want to get to know Hazel and build a connection deeper than whatever we have right now, I want to keep this other side of me private. The ruthless part of me. The murderer who has made bad choices. And the leader of a very strong mob family. It’s not my best attribute but being the first son, it’s my responsibility to keep the family running.

Family first. That’s how we mafiosos do it and there’s no escaping that.
