Chapter 228
Chapter 228: Chapter 228
– KILLIAN -
I let out a sigh, playing with my zippo in a dark room in the penthouse of a hotel. I’m expecting an important guest tonight, one I’ve wanted to meet for a very long, long time. The end of one side of my lips curl. I’m not smiling. Far from that, underneath this eerie smirk of mine is grit teeth.
I unclench my jaw, slowly letting my grip loosen on my zippo as I take a deep breath. My eyes come shut and I try to clear my head as I exhale slowly, repeating the process.
The sound of feet echoes in the room, the shoe soles of the bearer calmly hits the floor tiles with ease. This does not interrupt my breathing nor the attempt to cool off, no, in fact, for some weird reason, it actually aids me relax further.
The penthouse is dark. Not even the curtains are spread apart to let in some moonlight and I prefer it this way. Although certain parts of the penthouse are illuminated well enough to give highlights on the path to walk on and the latter but not more than that.
I don’t want to see the face of the killer in plain light as it’d only heighten my desire to do unspeakable harm to her and I don’t want her to see my face either.
I’d rather it be a mystery till I’m ready to slit her throat. Oh what fun would that day be.
“She’s here. Your guest has arrived, boss.” Liam’s gentle tone looms in the air directly into my ears. I don’t turn to face him, letting his words sink in. My eyes finally come open and I resume playing with my zippo, originally my father’s.
I take a deep breath in trying to ease my thoughts. Careful now, Killian, or you might be the one getting hurt, I remind myself solemnly in my mind as my fingers begin to get sore due to the hard rubs against my zippo because of my eagerness. Patience has always been key for me all my life, I’m not about to ruin it now.
“Do you want me to make myself scarce?” Liam asks. He’s being calm tonight. Part of me knows that’s his way of keeping himself tame.
I turn to face my brother. From this part of the penthouse, I can barely make outline of his figure but I can feel his presence without hearing him speak.
“Not too scarce. But rest assured that I’ll behave, brother.” I say under my breath. I hear the sound of retracting footsteps resound in the room.
“It’s quite ill mannered to keep your guest waiting,” there is a short pause after this statement. I can tell the hidden sarcasm. “Whoever it may be.” Liam adds, his voice drawing away slowly. I know he’s not in the room anymore. I’m suddenly faced with silence that seems like it’d last a lifetime if I don’t make a move. My hand tightens around the zippo, putting the metallic click to an end.
I’ll take this as my cue. Let’s pay this visitor her long awaited visit.
As I arrive at the dining room, the feminine figure of a slender woman’s back becomes more apparent to my sight. The minute illumination caused by the dimmed lights gives me a good glimpse of her back view. She’s dressed as old money.
My jaw clenches at the sight. Her petite figure bears a black corporate jumpsuit and holding her nicely packed hair which forms a bun just at the back of her neck is a hat. Her skin looks ravishing like only the best skin products have laid on that porcelain skin. Her nails are burgundy red. . . . The more steps forward I take, the more her features are apparent to me. . . . I draw the seat opposite hers out then make myself comfortable. We’re at the start and the end of the long dining table. This is the only distance that’d keep me from snapping that neck of hers.
My eyes rest on her face. The hat casts a shadow on the upper part of her face that wasn’t bound by it, revealing the lower half of her face to me. Her lips are the same colour as her nails, glossy burgundy.
She doesn’t look a day past twenty but she’s much older. I hate that her welfare is based off the blood of those she had killed. My parents included. I wonder if it was just a baseless slaughter or if she was paid to do it, regardless of the reason, I will break her and I will find out.
I clear my throat. “I must assume you have no idea why you were summoned here via invitation. And I am certain you have no idea who I am.”
“I received a mail the old fashioned way requesting for my physical presence which was marked ‘treat as urgent’.” Her voice is deep. The sultry feminine deep and husky. My eyes rests on her hand as she picks the bottle of fine wine and pour herself a glass. She drinks, poised and lady like.
She is nothing like a lady. Or not a decent one at best. I wonder if she treated all her victims the same way. I wonder if she dined to their demise.
“You surely have good taste with wine.” She husks, her voice dragging out. The lady rests her elbows on the desk, clapping both her hands to a side of her face then she rests her chin on it. “Now, would you do me the honours of telling me why I was urged to be here on short notice? Time is not on my hands and as a successful gentleman yourself, I’m quite certain you understand the importance of time.”
I scoff, a smirk on my face at the audacity. She hasn’t shown a hint of fear since. For a lady to show up alone when invited to a private meeting at a penthouse, she must not be afraid of anything.
I lean forward toward the table. I’d change that.
My eyes draw to my hands and I slowly take off my gloves, staring ever so calmly. “Long ago, in your prime, there was a woman and man.” I start, my voice suave and relaxed. I’m not one for story telling, but this will be my best story told yet. “They were powerful, dangerous people,” I look up to face her, she’s looking at me with focus but half her face is still not in view. I chuckle grimly. “Don’t get me wrong, they were the sweetest kind of danger you’d ever meet.” I shrug slightly, my eyes are now on my bare hand while the other gloved hand taps the table softly. “They had a family,” I take a short pause, my aim is to let the tale sink in. I need her to assimilate the danger she’d soon be in. “two boys.” I add, gesturing my fingers outwardly. “And when these boys were still so very young, the man and woman died. Now some would call it an ordinary death, but they were too young and healthy to die ordinarily. And too powerful too.” I take the second glove off my hand. “It was murder. Cold blooded murder.” My eyes, which were laid her way averts to my palm. I’m not playing with father’s zippo anymore and I can feel the thirst in my veins. “So these boys grew, a messed up yet catered for life and forged their way to an already existing, laid out powerful path. They allied with fellow families and dug out every single thing needed to know about this murderer. They found out she had eloped. Had children and a loving, living husband.” Even from here, I notice her posture change. I can feel the tension building up and some sense of awareness as my words prolong. Good. Just what I want. Very good. “They found out where she lives. Where every member of her family lives.” A wry chuckle leaves my mouth. I don’t know where she lives, Liam failed to inform me, but I do know it won’t be long till he does crack and let me know. And boy, would I be the luckiest man alive.
I take a deep breath, taking my time with the story telling. I want her to dig deep into hidden memories and ponder. If there was a chance she forgot this crime she committed, now would be the time for it to resurface. Despite how vague my explanation is to her.
“You may wonder why I’m telling you all this.” I continue. A crooked smile forms on my face as I stare at her with a newfound excitement and craving for murder. “You see, this lady received an invitation not too long ago and is sat in a familiar place in an unfamiliar setting.” I stand. The sound of the legs of my seat scraping the floor as I stood reverberates in the room.
I dip both my hands in my pocket, one entangling my zippo. “And little does she know that the one she’s conversing with is the one who’d delight in ruining her life, little by little.” I cock my head to the side. “So I’m giving her this tip.” My eyes darkens. My emotions are not hidden from my facial expression anymore. “Run.”
