Chapter 73: A Cry For Help

Chapter 73: A Cry For Help

Once I made it out to the pasture, Christian came over and helped me up on the horse after the stablehand saddled him.

The whole time, Lark was calm and allowed us to get him ready for riding.

"Must be a good day today. I’ve never seen Lark so calm before!" the stablehand exclaimed.

"Lark just has good taste. If I were him, I’d also be willing to have such a beautiful woman ride me," said Christian, smiling up at me.

His undisguised flirting caused me to blush. While he had called me beautiful on multiple occasions, they were always in private.

Hearing it now, in front of others, somehow made it even more special.

The stablehand nodded, agreeing with Christian’s comment while staying polite.

"Okay, let’s see if Lark will listen to you while you walk him around," he said, motioning for me to begin.

I held on to the reins and gently squeezed Lark’s sides with my calves. He responded immediately and began to walk forward.

We made three full laps before the stablehand clapped. "Okay, you’ve really proved it! Our temperamental Lark has finally found someone he likes enough to listen to. I can’t wait to tell the others about this!"

I patted Lark on his side, excited that we passed the test. Christian came over riding a beautiful, solid-black horse.

"Ready?" he asked.

"Ready!" I answered.

We steered the horses out onto the trail, heading down into the forest. The trail was wide enough for us to ride side by side, so I stuck close to Christian.

Lark was very cooperative, and we peacefully made our way into the forest. The already beautiful scenery turned even more beautiful as trees and exotic flowers came into view.

I looked around with great interest as we rode forward. Christian pointed out a few native birds with colorful feathers. Each one was unique and beautiful.

After about half an hour of riding, we suddenly heard a loud scream coming from the forest up ahead.

"Let’s see what’s going on, maybe someone got injured," I suggested, looking over at Christian.

He nodded and pulled on the reins of his horse, causing it to break out into a run. I was slightly nervous, but did the same to Lark.

Thankfully, Lark understood and followed behind Christian, keeping up at a good pace. It only took us a few minutes before we made our way to another forest clearing where a beautiful young woman was standing alone.

"Please help! Someone, help!" she yelled as loud as she could.

Christian came over and hopped off his horse. "What’s going on?"

The girl looked at Christian and momentarily froze, "Christian?"

I had Lark take a few steps forward, trying to understand what was going on.

"Cherie? What are you doing here? What’s going on?" asked Christian with concern.

She clung to his arm, "It’s my father! He walked into the forest over there, but it looked like a snake bit him. He told me to run, but when I got back here, my horse was gone. All I could do was yell for help."

Christian’s face was full of worry. "Which way did he go? I’ll look for him."

Cherie pointed into the forest in front of her, and Christian didn’t waste any time. "Leslie, stay here, I’ll be right back," he called out.

He hopped on his horse and leaped into the thicket before I even had a chance to reply. The whole situation made me nervous, but I followed his instructions and waited with Lark.

The other woman, Cherie, completely ignored me, nervously looking into the forest. I wanted to walk over and say a few comforting words, but I was afraid that she might take it the wrong way.

We didn’t have to wait too long because less than ten minutes later, Christian came back with an older man sitting behind him.

"Dad! You’re okay! I was so nervous!" Cherie yelled, causing Lark to take a few steps back.

"Yes, thankfully, Christian found me just in time. That snake was about to bite me again," the older man replied, looking at Christian with gratitude.

"Let’s get you guys out of here and to a hospital. I don’t believe that snake was poisonous, but he was bitten once. It’s better to be safe."

Cherie nodded, "But my horse..."

She looked at Christian pitifully, clearly hoping that he would offer her a ride on his horse.

"Oh, you can ride with me, if Lark doesn’t mind," I quickly offered.

Christian flashed me a grateful smile and nodded at Cherie to follow my suggestion. She walked over quickly, causing Lark to become weary. I could tell that the horse was feeling threatened by the way she ran in front of him.

I tried my best to keep him calm by gently petting him, but when Cherie approached to try to get on, Lark immediately hopped to the side, refusing to let her touch him.

"I’m sorry, but we were told that Lark is a temperamental horse. I don’t think he will let you ride him," I apologized.

Instead of backing away, she tried again. "Nonsense, all horses love me."

This time, Lark responded even more aggressively, lifting his front legs in protest. I held onto the reins as best as I could, nearly falling off.

Christian jumped off his horse and ran over, pulling Lark back down.

"Leslie, are you okay?!" he asked, looking up at me.

"Yes, thank you. I’m okay. Unfortunately, it seems like Lark won’t let her on," I said softly.

Christian looked at the horse in the eyes for a few moments. "Cherie, get on my horse," he said quickly.

I was the only one to notice the small smile appear on her face as she walked over to the black horse.

He carefully helped her up on his horse, "You both ride this horse, I’ll ride with Leslie."

The older man nodded, "Thank you, Christian". His voice was faint, and he looked very pale. Christian quickly walked over to my side and carefully hopped on Lark, weaving his arms around me as he held the reins.

"Come, let’s hurry back!" he said and took off.
