Secretly Mine
Chapter 58: Retelling

Chapter 58: Retelling

The next morning, Morgan and I were summoned to Father’s study before breakfast.

"How was your evening, ladies?" he asked in an oddly kind tone.

Morgan didn’t seem to notice it and quickly retold everything in a very grand and wonderful way.

"Father! It was magical. The lights and music were something I’ve never seen done before. Christian suggested that I fill in for the two missing models at the show, and let me tell you, I stole the show!"

I held back the urge to scoff at her self-centeredness, but hearing the night retold from her perspective gave me a good insight into how oblivious she really was.

"Christian suggested that you two fill in? That’s interesting," my father said, looking at us with interest. "Tell me more."

Morgan giggled, "He knew that I would outside that slut, Eve. The show was technically her debut show in the modeling industry. Must have been a really big slap to the face when I captured everyone’s attention."

I stood to the side and listened to her continue to recount how, after the show, everyone was talking about "that Moresi girl".

My lips curved up into a small smile. Thanks to Liam, I knew that the crowd was talking about me, but I wasn’t going to mention that small detail.

Father listened to her long and over-embezzled story with an uncanny amount of interest, even nodding at the parts where Morgan mentioned how smitten Christian was with her.

"Did both of you walk on stage?" he asked, glancing over at me.

"Hardly. Leslie only walked once. I’m guessing the designer took pity on her and let her walk once," Morgan scoffed proudly.

I nodded my head, confirming the fact that I only walked once.

"Very well. Thank you for telling me about your night. Hopefully, Christian will visit us again soon. I need to get him to sign the deal faster."

My father’s words went over Morgan’s head. Her imagination ran wild at the mention of Christian, so she didn’t pick up on the fact that she was being used as a bartered item in exchange for a signed contract.

"Morgan, go ahead and talk to your mother about your evening. I need to say a few things to Leslie," he ordered.

Morgan stood up from her chair and skipped out of the study, leaving me alone with my father.

"Tell me what happened last night," he said, looking at me with a serious expression.

I froze slightly, unsure of what he meant by the question.

"Didn’t Morgan--"

"I don’t care about the hearts and rainbows. I want to know what happened. Why did Christian suggest that you two fill in?" he asked, cutting me off.

The intensity of his stare was slightly frightening. I felt like I was under a spotlight at a police interrogation where all of the leads were pointing towards me.

"Due to being dragged into the runway show, I didn’t get a chance to gather information, but I did learn that there was a bet made," I replied, worried if I should be sharing this information.

"A bet?" he asked, leaning back in his chair.

I bowed my head. "I’m unsure of the nature of the bet, but I’m certain that we won."

He looked at me with a slight smile, "Well, that’s good news at least. I’ll try to ask around, I believe a few of my contacts were there last night."

The way he smiled made it seem like he was testing me, telling me that if what I said was wrong, he would know.

"Is there any other information that you want to share?"

I looked at him, remembering Christian’s promise in the dressing room. "Only that Christian reinforced his business trip next week. It’s somewhere overseas."

"Yes, that’s right. You mentioned he was meeting with the Amato Family. What could he possibly want with them?"

It only took him a few minutes of thinking before he turned angry. "Damn them! Of course, the Amato family has that legendary beauty. I really need to find a way to marry him off to Morgan before more families come out of the woodworks."

He looked at me sharply, "If I send you with him, will you be able to tell me everything that went on during the meeting? And most importantly, will you be able to keep that girl out of his bed?"

My heart raced. Just as Christian had predicted, my father was willing to send me on an overseas trip to simply continue spying on Christian. This would be my first time leaving the country without someone from my family constantly hovering over me.

Keep a girl out of Christian’s bed? Absolutely.

Trying to keep my true emotions from showing, I nodded calmly, "Yes, Father, I will do my best."

He looked for a long time before finally nodding his head, "Very well. The more information you bring back, the better. If you do a good job, I will reward you."

Reward me?

This time, I couldn’t hold back and looked at him with surprise. He never once ’rewarded’ me with anything. Not my excellent grades or when I placed first in my piano recital.

He’s so desperate for information that it’s worthy of a reward.

"Thank you, Father. I’ll make you proud."

At one point in my life, those words would have been said with pure honesty. I’ve always dreamt of making my father proud, even just once.

Unfortunately, those days were behind me. After how he treated me with Karl, I no longer care about supporting his ambitions.

He finally showed a small smile, "Yes, Leslie. You’re doing the family a great service."

The smile creeped me out. It was as if I were unknowingly about to harm someone.

After our talk, he dismissed me, and I went back to my room, skipping breakfast. I wasn’t sure if it was because she was aware of the feasts that Christian treated me to at lunch, or if she simply felt desperate to make us look perfect.

Thankfully, I had a small stash of snacks in my drawer that I filled with extra snacks from Christian’s company.

I sat on my bed eating a protein bar. The entire time, I couldn’t believe that my father actually let me go out of the country with Christian.

Maybe I should somehow sneak some of the lingerie that Christian bought me earlier into my luggage.
