Scarlet Descent -
Ch. 84 - Peaceful Times
“Origin Book …”
Though the Demon Trading Market had many tempting items and vendors, Wei Wei reluctantly parted with his desires to focus on his mission. He searched for shops related to the Life Demon System , knowing only such places would carry the Origin Book. Soon, he found a stall selling Life Serums in a weathered storefront within an abandoned town. A few pale blue serums lay displayed upfront.Wei Wei picked one up, inspected it, then set it back. They were genuine, but low-quality Life Serums.Life Serums were made by refining Life Demon blood, providing a surge of vitality. They were lifesavers for the critically injured or reckless adventurers, making them highly sought-after in the wilderness. Even within the Spiritual Barrier, corporate elites paid exorbitant prices for them, forming the largest gray-market industry. But these serums weren’t foolproof.Unless the user belonged to the Life Demon System, there were risks. Even purified serums carried side effects, users often heard the Life Demon’s whispers. The more frequently used, the louder the whispers, increasing the chance of losing control and becoming corrupted. While Life Serums could save lives, immortality was impossible. Many corporate elders who tried prolonging their lives with serums ended up as grotesque monsters. It was said the Foundation’s elite Xingtian Squad specialized in “cleaning up” these corrupted elders. As the Instructor once remarked: “Great job! March into their mansions, kill their patriarch… and they still pay us while thanking us!”Unsurprisingly, corporations funded labs to eliminate these side effects, dreaming of risk-free immortality.Even high-grade corporate serums had unavoidable flaws. The ones sold here were worse, diluted tenfold and mixed with junk. Some vendors even skipped refining entirely, injecting raw Life Demon blood into glucose solutions. Using these was a gamble between survival and suicide. But since the serums were genuine, Wei Wei lingered. After a moment, a voice from the shop’s shadows abruptly asked:“What do you want?”Wei Wei smiled at the shadowy figure. “Got the Origin Book?”“The Origin Book? Who’d have that?” The voice scoffed before adding, “But we’ve got copies. Want one?”Wei Wei’s eyes narrowed. Each demonic system had its “Bible”, the Origin Book itself was a sacred relic of the Life Demon System. Did this vendor think he was joking?Suppressing a sigh, Wei Wei said, “Yes.”“Price?”“Five thousand per copy.”“Twenty,” Wei Wei countered.Silence.“Selling or not?” Wei Wei pressed.“…Sold.”A printed Origin Book was thrust out. Wei Wei accepted it begrudgingly, handing over two ten-yuan bills. Ridiculously expensive, he thought. Twenty yuan could buy intel and a meal at Yuan Shu’s place. Before leaving, his gaze fell on a string of thumb-sized glass bottles hanging by the door. Each contained wispy black shadows darting inside.“What’s this?”“Ghosts. Postmortem spiritual variants. My shop’s specialty,” the vendor whispered. “Ten thousand each. No refunds if they vanish or backfire.”Most souls dissipated after death, leaving only rotting corpses. But under certain conditions, like in demon-saturated areas, under supernatural protection, or when infected by Knowledge Demons , ghosts could linger. These Knowledge Demon-infected ghosts roamed the Sea of Knowledge, prized resources for rituals and weapons.Wei Wei’s interest piqued. After advancing his Scarlet power to “touch minds,” he needed test subjects. These bottled ghosts were perfect.“Ten yuan?” he offered.A gun cocked in the shadows. “Looking for trouble?”Wei Wei paused. “What’s the real price?”“Ten thousand. More for special orders.”“Why is it so expensive?”The vendor sneered. “Artificially cultivating ghosts is laborious. We screen live subjects, torture them to build malevolence, then kill them. Quality guaranteed. Ten thousand’s a steal.”Artificial breeding? Wei Wei marveled. Even remote Scrap Iron City had industrialized ghost production.Smiling gently, he asked: “Do you have any made from children?”The vendor chuckled darkly. “Custom orders only. Expensive.”“No problem.”Wei Wei strode into the unlit shop. A stifled cry echoed before silence fell. Minutes later, blood seeped from the shadows.Wiping his hands with a towel, Wei Wei tossed it back, pocketed the vendor’s cash, and dropped twenty yuan on the corpse. He unhooked the ghost bottles and left, satisfied.Mission accomplished. Bonus secured.Outside, the bustling market carried on, oblivious. The days remained peaceful. These two week we are doing a mass release of 3 chapters everyday!
