Scarlet Descent -
Ch. 82 - The Demon Trading Market
At the same time, Wei Wei was patiently waiting in the courtyard for the impact of his artwork. He was somewhat excited to see how the hunters would react to it. For the general public in Scrap Iron City, this was just a terrifying massacre, but for those peripheral hunters lurking in the shadows, selecting their prey, they would certainly understand what kind of case this was and what it represented...
How much deterrent effect it would have, Wei Wei wasn't sure, but he was excitedly waiting for some change to appear. This was his work for advancing to the third stage of the Scarlet Sequence. It was also through this that he opened a new door, acquiring the ability to "touch souls." So, would these people, upon seeing the "work," also unknowingly trigger their third-stage abilities? He had a hunch that this was inevitable. However, from the time the newspapers were distributed throughout the city, he waited patiently but didn't see any reaction. Was it not enough, or was something missing? He had thought about going out to the streets to see if there would be any other reactions, but Captain Ouyang, although supportive of releasing the artwork, seemed to be on high alert now. Even Ye Feifei could go out to patrol, but he had to stay at the base. What was he being cautious about? Could it be that he would go out and kill another group of people? Which was unlikely! He needed to stay calm and not rush...He sensed his own anxiety and internally advised himself. During training camp, the instructor often scolded him for being too impatient, and several times, he had killed people before they could be interrogated, resulting in lost points. Now in Scrap Iron City, how could he not notice his own problems? Moreover, he was different now; he had acquired an artistic sense. He needed to be elegant.Just as he was bored and thinking about this, he saw Captain Ouyang come out of the office, dressed in a sharp three-piece suit and a stunning silver windbreaker, wearing gold-framed glasses. He beckoned Wei Wei from afar: "Little Wei, come with me.""Where are we going?" Wei Wei asked."To work," Captain Ouyang replied.Wei Wei felt as if his worldview had been shattered. "Little Wei, you're very enthusiastic about your work, but as your captain, I must criticize you.""We're nominally law enforcement, but we're actually investigators. Our main task is to investigate.""That's right, Captain. What are we investigating?""Of course, we need to figure out why these people went to such great lengths. What was their purpose?"As they left the base, Wei Wei initially planned to drive his own car, but Captain Ouyang had already mounted his motorcycle and signaled for Wei Wei to get on. Seeing the captain's mysterious and unyielding expression, Wei Wei obediently sat down, holding his legs. He wondered if Uncle Gun would be angry, as this was usually his seat.Captain Ouyang put on his wind goggles and sped through the streets, heading towards the southern part of Scrap Iron City. Along the way, he explained to Wei Wei: "Little Lin and Uncle Gun have collected evidence from the small monastery's altar and the scene. We've made some educated guesses about the case. Now, all we need is to compare and confirm its nature, so we can submit a report that the higher-ups can't refuse.""Captain, you're really farsighted," Wei Wei said, genuinely impressed. He hadn't thought that deeply; he just wanted to find the opponents and kill more of them, or at least have a good chat with them."What's the plan for the final confirmation, Captain?" Wei Wei asked."There's only one thing that can give us the answer," Captain Ouyang replied with a smile."What is it?" Wei Wei inquired."The Origin Book!"Wei Wei was taken aback: "We have that here?"Captain Ouyang explained: "The difference between inside and outside the Spiritual Barrier is significant. Inside, it's impossible to have such large-scale sacrifices, and there are fewer areas beyond our jurisdiction. But here, we have things that are considered forbidden inside.""Like what?" Wei Wei asked."For instance, the Origin Books, which are viewed as taboo inside. They're available here, outside the city, at the demon trading market."Captain Ouyang revealed a cold smile: "You can buy one for thirty yuan. If you're interested, you can even buy it in bulk."Wei Wei was amazed and unexpectedly discovered: "In some strange places, Captain seems to have a competitive spirit."Every demon was once a god. Their powers, rituals, and how to please them after inheriting their powers were all recorded by followers and Transcendents, forming a kind of "bible" for each system. In the Life System, it was called the "Origin Book." Wei Wei also knew that the Knowledge Demon System had the "Book of True Knowledge," the War Demon System had the "Hymn of Holy War," the Order Demon System had the "Sacred Canon of Principles," and the Death Demon System had the "Book of the Dead."These "bibles" might contain descriptions of sacrifices that could help them understand the purpose behind the rituals. However, Wei Wei knew that all such texts were forbidden within the Spiritual Barrier. Not only would wild Transcendents be tempted by the power described in them, violating rules, but even Transcendent law enforcement officers might be lured into corruption. So, even though he knew about the Origin Book, he hadn't thought of using it to solve his doubts until Captain Ouyang mentioned it. And now, he was surprised to learn that it could be bought in bulk...As they sped along, the buildings around them gradually thinned out. Although Scrap Iron City was nominally part of the Spiritual Barrier, the distinction between it and the outside Wastelands was clear. However, the actual separation was just a barbed wire fence, which was often damaged by smugglers and those sneaking in or out. Captain Ouyang led Wei Wei through a large hole in the fence, familiar with the route.Wei Wei was amazed: "Captain, do we have to leave the city through these smugglers' hidden paths?""No need," Captain Ouyang replied. "We can just inform the patrol team.""Why are we taking this route then?""It's more convenient. If we go to report, we'd have to take a detour and fill out paperwork."Wei Wei, adopting a humble learning attitude, closed his mouth and followed Captain Ouyang. They reached a place about ten miles outside Scrap Iron City, where a row of lively lights appeared amidst the endless, dark grass. These lights were hidden in the ruins of abandoned towns, which had been deserted as people moved into cities after the establishment of the Spiritual Barrier. The town before them was like a ghost town, with crumbling buildings and broken windows, but one street stood out as bustling. This was the demon trading market."Is this really an illegal trading ground formed by wild Transcendents, demon followers, and smugglers?" Wei Wei wondered. "A place where everyone with demonic powers does illegal business without fear of being reported?"Wei Wei was getting excited."Pay the parking fee," Captain Ouyang said, snapping Wei Wei back to reality. As Wei Wei looked around, he saw Captain Ouyang had already stopped the motorcycle among a clutter of cars. A small figure sat on a stool in the shadows, nodding towards them."Do we really need to pay for parking here?" Wei Wei asked, surprised."Of course," Captain Ouyang replied. "This place isn't as safe as the city. If you don't find someone to watch your vehicle, it might be gone when you return. And if the whole car is stolen, you can just chase after it and get it back. But if they steal parts like the wheels, it's a hassle to replace them."Wei Wei suddenly felt that Captain Ouyang was very experienced. He obediently went to pay the fifty yuan parking fee to the figure in the shadows without questioning it.Captain Ouyang, who had been watching with some guilt, felt a surge of appreciation for Wei Wei when he saw him pay without hesitation."Cough, this is just an advance," Captain Ouyang said as Wei Wei returned. "You can get reimbursed from Lucky later.""Fifty yuan is nothing; no need to reimburse," Wei Wei replied with a smile.Captain Ouyang's pupils contracted slightly as he looked at Wei Wei, his eyes filled with admiration. We are doing a mass release of 3 chapters everyday this week!
