Chapter 32: Battle against the deplorable: Begins

After the meeting, the Church and Dragon Knights set out.

The plan was simple: the Dragon Knights would spread across Dolon City and report any large gatherings. Since dragons attacking within a city could be catastrophic, they were to serve as scouts only.

Meanwhile, the Darkan army and Church Knights split into squads, covering different sectors of the city. Upon receiving any report, the closest squad would mobilize.

Their current objective was to minimize the kidnappings and relocate civilians to a temporary settlement prepared by the branch family.

...

As expected, after adjusting to his new strength, the older Deplorable set out to gather forces.

As a well-connected figure in the underground, it wasn’t difficult to reach other organizations. Demonstrating the effects of the blood orb alone was enough to pique their interest. Once spies reported back to their factions, more groups became intrigued.

By the end of the second day, the number of unaffiliated underground individuals and allied organizations had grown significantly. He shared his vision—destroying the branch family and the Church, then moving against the main family. He promised to distribute temporary orbs now and permanent one when their victory was complete.

Ordinarily, such a dream would be dismissed. But with the power of the orb, it felt... possible.

The next step: kidnapping civilians to produce more temporary blood orbs.

And so, they spread out.

...

Dolon was the second-largest city in Darkan territory, second only to Darkos, the capital of the Darkan lands. So with its vast population and sprawling terrain, it was ideal for the Deplorable Blood Alliance to strike, hide, and avoid the watchful eyes of dragons.

But not everyone got lucky.

"[Squad Leader 49, there’s suspicious activity about 1,000 meters from your position.]"

"Understood." Tasha turned to her squad. "Move out."

Her team consisted of her original Darkan comrades, Baines, two priests from the Church, and one new face.

"Yes, cousin," a teenage boy with the same red hair replied with a knowing grin.

"Shut up, Ronick." Tasha rolled her eyes. Ronick, the only son of Roderick Darkan, rarely missed a chance to tease her.

They moved on horses for long distances at a good pace.

’Warhorses are certainly better.’ Baines noticed as he rode. The warhorse seemed like a drugged and more active version of a horse; not just that, they packed more power.

Their bodies were strong enough to ram into outliers without breaking down.

In his thoughts, Ronick glanced back at Baines riding silently at the rear.

’So that’s him,’ he thought. It was impossible not to have heard of Baines—better known as Jin—and his exploits. Ronick had joined the squad mainly to see what the hype was about. He expected someone commanding or wanting to be among and loud. Instead, Baines hadn’t uttered a word since the beginning of their journey, and he seemed content to stay in the background.

"Is he always like that?" Ronick asked Tasha quietly.

"Yeah," she sighed. "Sometimes I think he only cares about the achievements."

"Hmm..." Ronick returned to his thoughts as they neared the reported site.

...

"H-Help..."

"No, please..."

"..."

Cries of fear echoed from inside the building.

"Shut up, or I’ll cut you," snarled a scarred man, his eyes gleaming with murderous intent.

The civilians fell silent, covering their mouths to stifle any sound as fear drowned their bodies.

"Chief, we’ve rounded them up. What next?" another man asked the large figure standing at the entrance.

"Hmm..." The chief paused, recalling his boss’s recent actions.

Their group had made a deal with the Deplorable mage. In exchange for a temporary blood orb, they had to provide the ’materials’

Meaning blood from civilians.

He always trusted his boss’s judgment due to its near accuracy, but he felt uneasy about this job.

"The boss said to gather around 200... we have 300. That should be enough." He nodded.

The plan had worked perfectly.

What he had done was actually easy. They staged a fight in the middle of the village, and as planned, the villagers curiously came to watch. That was the plan the deplorable mage had devised to kidnap the civilians.

"Good. I hope no one saw us, right?" he asked.

"Ye—well, I saw a dragon fly by," one subordinate admitted.

"A dragon?" he repeated, then shrugged. "We’re in their territory after all, don’t be surprised unless they spot us."

The men nodded.

"Remember the plan. If we’re attacked before reaching the boss, use the civilians as shields. Move."

Following his order, they moved together with their kidnapped.

...

Three hundred bound civilians were dragged along by seventy armed men, led by the Chief, on their way to their predestined location.

The area was silent as they had already kidnapped most people in the village, and the survivors wouldn’t dare make a sound.

Until they reached half their destination, they encountered no resistance.

And, while the men counted it as luck, the Chief didn’t.

’The place is too silent.’ He muttered, scanning his surroundings.

Once in a while, he told his men to check the surroundings and even scanned with his aura, but he caught nothing.

Pushing aside the unease, he continued his journey, and after hours of journey, he reached the destination his boss had told him about.

’Phew. Guess I was just being paranoid,’ he exhaled as familiar allies welcomed him.

Unbeknownst to him, however—

About 25 figures stood silently in the distance behind them, their mouths packed with a strange plant.
