Rise of the Horde -
Chapter 377 - 377
"We drove them away?" a sentry exclaimed in surprise after seeing the towering figures retreating. Almost all of them or many among them were fearful of the ogres reaching the walls.
Commander Barika surveyed the retreating figures, his expression guarded. He had seen enough battles to know that a victory could be fleeting, and that even retreating enemy forces could pose a threat.
"Keep watch," he ordered, his voice ringing out across the battlements. "They may be planning something else."
The sentries nodded, and turned their attention back to the battlefield outside. Barika, however, couldn't take his eyes off the retreating ogres. Something about the movements of the enemy army seemed off, almost as if they were just toying with them.
As the sun began to dip below the horizon, Barika made his way down to the courtyard to survey the damage. The battle didn't reach the walls, but the rain of rocks from the enemy did a lot of destruction, leaving many of the soldiers injured or dead. The ground was slick with blood, and the scent of death hung heavy in the air.
Despite the toll it had taken, the Ereians couldn't help but feel a sense of pride in their victory. They managed to halt the enemy attack before it even reach the walls.
Barika approached one of his officers, who was busy tending to the wounded soldiers. The man looked up at him with a weariness that betrayed the weight of the day's events.
"How many casualties?" Barika asked.
The man hesitated before answering. "Over two hundred, sir. We were lucky to have survived the attack."
Barika nodded, his eyes scanning the courtyard for any sign of movement from the enemy forces. He couldn't shake off the feeling that something was off.
"Keep a close watch," he said to the officer. "I don't trust those ogres and orcs. They may have retreated, but I have a feeling they're planning something else."
The man saluted, and Barika made his way back up to the battlements. Hours passed but there was yet to be any movement from the enemy camp and Barika dozed off leaning against the side of a tower.
"The enemy army is making a move!" one of the sentries yelled to alert his fellow Ereians.
Barika quickly got up to his feet and made his way to the front. As he took his position, his eyes scanned the landscape, searching for any sign of movement. The sky was slowly turning from orange to red as the sun continued to set, casting a beautiful hue over the battlefield. But Barika had no time at hand to admire the view.
Suddenly, he saw something moving in the distance, a dark figure barely visible among the sands. He squinted his eyes, and trained it on the figure. Through his eyes, he could barely make a figure of an orc, and he wasn't alone.
"Get the archers ready," Barika barked out orders to his men. "The enemy is coming."
The Ereian soldiers rushed to prepare themselves for the incoming attack. They manned their positions, bows at the ready, watching as the orcs advanced on them.
The enemy was moving slowly, methodically, almost as if they were taunting the Ereians. Barika knew that this was a trap, but he couldn't predict what the enemy had in store for them. There mages were already exposed and they can no longer make use of them to surprise the enemy army.
As the enemy army approached the walls, Barika could see that the ogres were carrying something with them. It was a massive battering ram, and it was clear that the enemy's plan was to break through the walls and attack the Ereians from within.
Fear began to fester among the hearts of the defenders. The previous assault of the ogres was scary enough, how much more was an all-out attack from the enemy army.
"Halt!" Sakh'arran shouted, a blast of a horn followed after his command. The orcish horde with all its might halted in their advance, just a few meters away from the enemy's range.
On the walls, Barika and the soldiers were once again puzzled by the movement of the enemy army. They mobilized what looks like their full might, but refused to attack just yet.
"What are they up to now?" Barika grumbled. The actions and decisions by the enemy army was too much for a muscle-brained person like him to process.
"Looks like they are waiting for darkness to set in before beginning their attack," an officer who was standing beside Barika voiced out his opinion. Unlike their commander, he was a bit knowledgeable about battle strategies. "They would have a huge advantage during the dark since we would not be able to see their movements."
The officer knew that the sight of the orcs wouldn't be affected by the darkness of the night. They wouldn't have any problem making their move with no torches.
Barika nodded, his expression grim. He knew that they had to come up with a plan, and fast. He turned to the officer, a glimmer of hope in his eyes.
"What do you suggest we do?" he asked.
The officer hesitated for a moment, before finally speaking up.
"We could use fire arrows," he suggested. "They would light up the battlefield, and make it hard for the enemy to move around unnoticed. And if I remember correctly, one of the mages who is with us is adept at using fire spells. His spells would surely lit up the darkness effectively."
Barika thought about it for a moment, weighing the pros and cons. It was risky, but it might just work.
"Get the archers ready," he ordered. "We're going to light up the night." then he headed towards where the mages were at to ask for their aid.
The Ereians quickly began to prepare their arrows, dipping them in oil to create makeshift torches. The darkness began to creep in, but they didn't falter. They stood their ground, waiting for the order.
"Let loose!"
The order that they were waiting for arrived. Arrows trailing with flames covered the sky, then harmlessly hit the ground. The battlefield outside the walls was littered with tiny torches and provided a bit of light.
