Chapter 66: Fake Death

Chapter 66: Fake Death

Cain felt terror take over his entire body as he watched the footage from the drones he had spread throughout the rift.

How was it possible that everyone had been defeated? Not only that, but all the agents he had sent had been killed. And by mere students, no less.

He knew Sophia would be dangerous, but he had no way of knowing how powerful Sylvia was and...

"It’s all his fault!" Cain shouted angrily, trying to suppress his fear with the rage he felt toward Davi. If it weren’t for him, the fungi would have killed all the low rank students, Linda would have been able to kill Alexia and Alden, and then Sophia’s group would have been cornered.

But all his plans had been destroyed by the presence of that damn boy. And now, what could he do? When his mistress returned, she would be furious...

"What happened?"

Cain heard a cold voice, and when he turned his gaze, he saw the last person he wanted to see at that moment.

His mistress, a powerful woman named Sherazade.

She was truly beautiful. Her skin had a golden-brown hue, with an almost irresistible sensual glow. Her features were striking, with high, defined cheekbones, a delicately sharp nose, and full, naturally rosy lips, as if inviting long, passionate kisses.

That said, her gaze was terrifying, like that of a predator. With an exotic yellowish tone, it was as beautiful as it was dangerous. And under that cruel gaze, Cain trembled.

"Well, I..." He simply couldn’t find the words to say.

"You know I hate wasting time, don’t you?" she remarked with a sadistic smile, as she twirled her fingers around her long black hair.

However, seeing that the man was too terrified to respond, she sighed deeply. Then, she tossed her hair back.

Her long black strands cascaded like a waterfall, swaying with a soft breeze. They fell to her waist, moving with an almost magical lightness with every step she took.

Normally, the woman adorned her hair, which she was very proud of, with small golden ornaments and jewels. And that day, she wore a beautiful butterfly-shaped hairpin.

However, it was more than just a simple hairpin. After all, the object had a sharp tip, sharp enough to pierce the skin.

She finally crouched down to the man’s level, who by now was sitting on the floor, trying to calm himself.

"First, look at me," she said, then extended her long fingers and gently cupped the man’s face, forcing him to look at her.

"How many do we lose," her full lips curled in a cruel smirk.

The man trembled once again, fearing the punishment that would befall him after what he was about to say. But he knew that lying would be worse, besides he had already made all the preparations he could.

"Unfortunately, we failed."

"How did we fail?"

"All the agents died," with no other options, he began to recount the entire story of what had happened.

But contrary to what he expected, his master was not angry. In fact, she could barely contain her smile, and her gaze wandered into the infinite, seemingly consumed by some transcendental pleasure.

"How interesting," she finally murmured. Then, moving so fast that Cain couldn’t even understand what had happened, she removed the hairpin from her hair and drove it into the neck of the man before her. She then whispered with a smile.

"It seems I’ll have several formidable opponents today," her voice sounded warm, filled with happiness. "I think I’ll let my hair down today..." she concluded as she observed the corpse before her.

It was only then that she noticed something. That damned man had deceived her! After all, that wasn’t his real body, but a clone or something similar.

But Sherazade wasn’t bothered and decided she would hunt down that fool later to punish him for what he had done.

"Now, what should I wear? Today is a special occasion, so..."

She danced unconsciously around the place, her mind wandering through the possibilities. As someone who loved hunting powerful prey, she liked to prepare appropriately for such moments.

And after much thought, she made her decision...

She decided to wear an Arabic dancer’s outfit. With a kind of black bra, adorned with beautiful golden embroidery.

The attire left her shoulders and elegant neck exposed, along with a generous cleavage that naturally drew the gaze of any man.

Her unprotected belly and all that exposed skin would make her more vulnerable in battle, but she looked so sexy. Besides, the risk of death was what made combat interesting.

For the lower part of the outfit, she chose a short, translucent dress that showcased her shapely and sexy legs, allowing them to be admired during the fight. After all, an assassin should always be sexy.

She completed her outfit with some accessories, which also had practical uses. She wore a beautiful silver necklace with a dragon gem at its center.

She also adorned her wrists with bracelets made of a durable metal alloy. One of them had embossed designs that told the story of an offering to a certain god.

She didn’t know the meaning, but she fell in love with the adornments after finding them in the rift. Finally, she applied a perfume with a strong scent.

Meanwhile, Sophia’s group had finished defeating the shadows that had been sent to deal with them a while ago.

After that, they had a small problem: Sylvia had disappeared. And while some were worried that she might have died in there, the blonde girl was doing her best to suppress her laughter.

After all, she knew exactly why the girl hadn’t returned: that idiot had probably gotten lost again, she had a terrible sense of direction after all.

"Can you feel her mana?" the girl asked Carlos.

"I can sense the trace she left behind, but..." he hesitated, trying to find the right words to describe it. "I think it’s like she’s gone to the lower floor."

Could this temple somehow be connected to the lower floor? And if that was the case, that could be an excellent path to reach their destination.

"Can you check if there are many monsters in there?" she asked.

"I already did, my lady!" He smiled with great pride. For Carlos, it was always a pleasure to serve his lady properly. "I didn’t sense any beasts in there."

"Got it, good job, then let’s take a different path."

"Wait, can this turn out to be more dangerous?" another student asked.

The blonde girl could understand what he was thinking. In fact, there was a great risk in entering something like that without any idea of what it was. She had even said not to go in there earlier.

That said, she needed to find Sylvia, who had gotten lost. Besides, Sophia’s instincts were telling her that at this point, this was the best decision.

"Maybe," she admitted. "But it’s not like anyone is going to die with me here. Why don’t we give it a shot? Also, since there are fewer monsters, this path seems safer for now."

Those words were enough to convince most of the students to follow her. And those who weren’t convinced by her words were basically forced by the majority.

In that situation, no one wanted to be alone at any point. Especially not if they had to be far away from Sophia.

On the other hand, Alexia’s group was having surprisingly little trouble surviving on that floor. Even when they carefully explored the central forest, they ended up encountering almost no monsters.

The reason for this was the massacre Linda had carried out to feed her zombie fungus. And after Davi defeated the queen, the entire colony was destroyed. All the corpses stopped moving.

Because of this, the few monsters that survived were hiding. Or they were simply too few in number to pose any real challenge to Alden and Alexia together. In a way, even from afar, Davi had ensured everyone’s safety there. Or at least up to that point.

However, just as they were preparing to descend into the large crater to investigate what lay below, Sherazade appeared.

Her mere presence was enough to make most of the students faint, unable to even attempt resistance.

Even Alexia and Alden struggled to breathe under her gaze. In an instant, she lunged forward with a strong murderous intent.

But Alden moved quickly, trying to stop her. She drove her blade into the boy’s arms, and he resisted as best he could. Then he created a circular barrier and urged everyone to flee.

"There’s no need for all this desperation. I have no interest in killing the weak," she said with a graceful smile, easily breaking free from the boy’s prison by destroying his barrier. Then, she caused a mark to appear on the bodies of all the students except Marc, Alden, and Alexia.

"Wow, so weak..." she remarked, surprised that so many had been marked. She cursed her luck. She had probably attacked the weakest group. "Alright, all of you who are marked have 30 seconds to disappear from my sight. If you dawdle, I’ll kill you without hesitation."

As she said this, she immediately cut off Hao’s arm because he had the look of someone who intended to resist.

"Don’t even try to stay here. You’ll just get in the way." After this display of brutality, the students finally fled.

Then, the woman turned to the three who remained. But seeing that Marc was far below the other two, she kicked him away.

"Since people fight better when motivated, I’ll give you a heads-up. That mark is poison. So if you don’t kill me today, all of them will die," she said, though even Sherazarde herself didn’t know how many hours each person would last. The poison was stronger in lower-level individuals and stopped working beyond a certain level.

"Now, come and face me," she said, unable to contain her excitement.
