Chapter 54: Trouble approaching.

"How is it possible that they’re still alive?" Cain muttered, biting his own finger in an attempt to calm himself.

His plan had everything to be perfect, yet everything was going wrong, and they still hadn’t managed to eliminate a single student.

What frustrated him the most was how the lower-ranked students had survived, even after he teleported them away from the main group. That should have been impossible, or at least, it was supposed to be.

But his problems were far from over. Not only had he completely failed in his mission to weaken, or perhaps even kill, Sophia, but he had also made little progress in his search for the sacred ark.

And fate seemed to insist on mocking him, even when he received news that should have been positive. One of the shadows had discovered one of the lost temples, but in an ironic twist of coincidence, Sophia’s group had found the place first.

Because of that, he judged that his only option was to engage in direct confrontation. He couldn’t allow any witnesses to survive.

His master was expected to return soon, and when she was around, everything would become so much easier.

The problem was that Cain wanted to have resolved all the issues before she came back. That way, she would be impressed with his results, and he would earn her trust.

But on the contrary, he would likely have to report a significant number of failures to her, and naturally, that enraged him.

He bit his fingers even harder as he thought about a solution. Someone as risk-averse as him had difficulty making definitive decisions in moments like this.

However, it was at that moment that Linda, the monster creator from the group, approached him, handing over a report that would change everything.

Sophia wasn’t at full strength; in fact, three of the strongest students who should have been with her had left to face the floor guardian.

That was the perfect opportunity!

He could send all his forces to attack Sophia, and if everything went right, he might even manage to kill her.

Still, to avoid problems, he needed to get rid of the low-rank student group. Even more so, considering that the remaining three might join them.

Normally, he wouldn’t worry about weak students, but if they had survived so long in that place, it meant they had something special.

"I’ll remove all the limitations," Cain began, speaking to the girl. "I want you to actively send your undead army to hunt the low-rank students. At the same time, use the leftover corpses to delay the trio."

"Leave it to me," Linda said, a sadistic smile forming on her face. She couldn’t contain her excitement, knowing that her creatures would finally have the chance to develop.

Then shadows surrounded the girl, and Cain sent her to the necessary location. Afterward, he called his other two agents and sent them to where Sophia was. Those three should be enough.

As for Cain himself, he wouldn’t join the fight because he needed to be ready when his mistress returned.

A little before all of this, Alexia, Alden, and Sylvia were rushing toward the core of the floor. They tried to avoid fighting monsters as much as possible, but any creature that stood in their way was swiftly cut down, either by Alexia’s strikes or, more often, by Sylvia’s devastating attacks.

Because of this, it didn’t take long for the trio to reach their destination. As they stepped into the vast chamber where the floor’s core was, a heavy, oppressive aura filled the air.

The ground trembled slightly beneath their feet, and the sound of something massive shifting echoed through the cavern.

Then, from the darkness at the far end of the chamber, it emerged.

The floor guardian was an enormous beast, standing nearly twenty feet tall. Its body was covered in thick, jagged stone-like armor, its massive claws scraping against the ground as it moved. Glowing red eyes pierced through the dim light. The moment its gaze fell upon them, the guardian let out a deafening roar

Alden reacted immediately, standing between the creature’s strike and the two girls behind him. And reinforcing his body as best he could, he managed to hold on to the monster’s claws.

Then, without hesitation, Sylvia was the first to strike. She dashed forward with inhuman speed, and her blade danced in the air, as she slashed the monster up and down. But no blood was spilled, as the creature’s hide was too thick.

The creature retaliated immediately, swinging one of its massive claws at her. Sylvia barely managed to dodge, flipping backward just in time.

Without missing a beat, she summoned multiple chains from thin air, their metallic links glowing faintly with energy. They shot forward, wrapping around the monster’s limbs as she carefully read its movements, anticipating its next attack.

Alden acted soon after, approaching the creature and hugging its legs as he tried to hold it in place. This, combined with Sylvia’s chains, was enough to slow the creature’s movements.

Alexia used this opportunity to spin in the air, using <moon slash> to finally open a small wound on the creature’s chest. The beast responded by roaring even louder and breaking free from its bonds as it prepared to attack its enemies.

Realizing that this fight wouldn’t be easy, Sylvia suddenly called out to them.

"Alexia, Alden!" she shouted, narrowly dodging another attack. "You two should go ahead! Find the core and move to the next floor, I can take care of this thing on my own!"

Alexia’s eyes widened in shock. "Are you crazy?! We’re not leaving you alone against this thing!"

Sylvia smirked, tightening her grip on her sword, then she danced in the air, and slashed towards her enemy, cutting its eyes.

"Don’t worry, I’m not planning to die here. I can take this by myself!"

Then Sylvia summoned even more chains, pulling her enemies toward her. She then created spears and launched them at her opponent, enraging the beast.

As the creature charged forward, trying to strike the silver-haired girl, she skillfully retreated, luring it away from the core and creating the perfect chance for the other two to escape.

With that, Sylvia was finally alone. Her eyes glowed with a bluish hue as the air around her began to ripple violently.

Her sister had ordered her never to reveal this power to anyone, so she could only fight freely when there was no one around.

She moved like a dancer, weaving through the enemy’s attacks with ease. No matter how strong the monster was, it couldn’t keep up with her speed.

Then, at last, she leaped onto the creature’s head. At that moment, all the energy surrounding her condensed into a single point.

Instead of forming an ordinary weapon, this time, she created something resembling a spear. However, the object had no defined shape and seemed to be made of pure energy, glowing faintly with a bluish hue.

As soon as it was complete, the incredibly dense spear was pulled downward by gravity and pierced through the creature with terrifying ease.

The technique itself was simple, Sylvia could create objects, so all she had to do was make something with immense density and let gravity do the work.

However, landing this attack accurately wasn’t easy. So after landing on the ground, Sylvia once again evaded the creature’s strikes and leaped onto its head. But this time, she created hundreds of spears like before, which rained down upon the beast, obliterating it.

Afterward, she intended to regroup with Alexia, but then she sensed a powerful presence approaching Sophia’s location.

Believing that the other two would likely be fine on their own, she decided to turn back and check on the blonde.

David didn’t have much difficulty escaping the zombie beasts, after all the dense forest gave him several options for places to hide. And, most importantly, those dead animals could only sense it through mana. Therefore, if he was far enough away, he could simply suppress mana to hide.

Thanks to this, he can observe the pack from a distance, confirming his fears. That didn’t seem to be the result of a necromancer, but rather a zombie fungus. A monster that took over and controlled the bodies of the dead.

But that was strange, this monster was once found in the Midgard Rift, but there was no report of this species existing in the Enki Rift.

Furthermore, such a powerful monster would probably be on even deeper floors... So why was that monster there? Was it the result of unparalleled bad luck? Probably not, so who brought that disgrace to the rift?

As far as David knew, it was impossible to tame that fungus. Which made it even stranger that someone had taken him to that place.

But all these worries disappeared when he noticed something much more problematic: the monsters were leaving that vast forest and heading towards the narrow caves.

Why are they going there? David wondered, seeing yet another unnatural attitude from those beings, who would normally prefer to stay in the forest, where there were an abundance of beings to kill and infect.

The boy’s heart fluttered considering the possibility that they were heading to hunt his classmates.

So he ran, taking an alternative route to get to the camp.
