Chapter 125: Pair project.
"There’s no need to be so tense," Davi said calmly, observing the woman before him.
Lina wore a robe that hid all of her body. And she carried a magical shaft. All in all, she really had the look of a mage.
That being said, what most caught the boy’s attention was how her hands were trembling. If she was too scared during the exploration, it could end up being a big problem.
People overcome by fear are not capable of making rational decisions.
"You’re with the man who survived two weeks inside the rift, collecting 15 Dryad roots on the third floor will be a piece of cake," Davi said, reassuring her once more.
Lina merely nodded. It was a shame that her eyes were hidden by her hair, but she at least seemed to smile slightly after hearing that. And she also stopped trembling so much.
And with that, Davi took the first step into those damp corridors. As a group project, the teacher gave each group some items they should collect.
Davi and Lina were unlucky, getting one of the most difficult tasks, but it was still something simple. If they had to face an actual Dryad, they would be at risk. However, they only needed to collect the roots.
Luckily, the boss of the 2nd floor was a Dryad, and its roots grew up to the third floor, creating an excellent collection point. All the novice explorers went to that place.
Therefore, their biggest challenge would be hoping that there were enough roots left.
"By the way, what’s your class?" Wanting to break the silence, the boy asked.
What followed was a long silence, which made the atmosphere even more uncomfortable.
"Sorry," Davi scratched the back of his neck uncomfortably, "you don’t have to tell me if you don’t want to. I understand that many people prefer to keep that kind of information secret."
"Thank you," she replied with just one word.
And, at that moment, almost as if saving Davi from the uncomfortable atmosphere, a group of goblins appeared.
"Can you handle them?" the boy asked, preferring to avoid using <Love the King> so early, he still would need to go training with morrigan later.
Lina nodded, then she closed her eyes, and mana began to accumulate in her staff. Then, she froze the entire corridor.
"I’m sorry," when she finally opened her eyes and noticed the chaos she had caused, the girl apologized in her usual low tone.
Davi, shivering from the cold, caressed the top of the girl’s head and comforted her, saying that everything was alright. The last thing he needed at that moment was for her to feel guilty; that would only delay them further.
Besides, the power she displayed was very good. But the lack of control was a problem. Furthermore, she seemed to spend too much mana on her attacks.
Perhaps the problem was that she got too nervous inside the rift?
Davi undoubtedly noticed how she closed her eyes before attacking. And the nervousness seemed to make her unable to control herself properly.
"Let’s move on," He said.
There was no point in spending so much time thinking about it.
They continued through the now-frozen corridor, and Davi broke the ice statues that the goblins had become. The monsters were probably already dead, but making sure didn’t hurt.
Moving forward, they finally managed to escape the cold, and the boy could breathe a sigh of relief. It wasn’t long before they were attacked again, this time by giant bats. But Davi decided to deal with them personally.
The bats had very low magical defense and weren’t very fast. That’s why he managed to defeat them using only the new mana pistol he had acquired.
Lina admired Davi’s agile movements. In particular, she admired how he didn’t seem to show the slightest fear even when facing monsters.
He had a courageous smile and a gaze focused solely on victory. Undeniably, he was confident, the complete opposite of her...
"Are you alright? Were you hit by any of the attacks?" Noticing that the girl wasn’t following him, Davi turned around and asked with a gentle smile.
Then he approached, wanting to examine Lina’s condition.
Embarrassed and afraid to take off her robe and reveal her body, she quickly took a step back. Then she explained in a high-pitched tone.
"I, I’m fine..." she stretched out her arms, placing them between the boy and herself in a silent plea for him to step away.
Davi naturally took a step back and smiled gently, asking her once more if she was alright.
"Yes, I’m fine," she confirmed this time in her usual low and timid tone. "Thank you," she thanked him once again.
Observing Davi’s retreating back once more, she blushed furiously. Her heart was beating excessively fast, and she couldn’t stop thinking about his words and his smile.
Besides being confident and powerful, Davi was also a very kind man. Lina wondered if her presence wasn’t just a problem. Someone like him could probably complete the project faster alone than accompanied by her.
Either way, she still followed him, and upon reaching the desired location, they got lucky and managed to collect three roots.
Even so, they had only completed 1/5 of the task. But there was nothing they could do about it, the next closest collection point for Dirade roots was on the 42nd floor, and it was too risky for just the two of them to go there alone.
So they would have to keep visiting that place over the next few days. Fortunately, they still had a week left to complete the project, so it was doable.
Moreover, Lina was secretly happy that their mission wouldn’t end so soon. Even though she had barely spoken during the whole expedition, she truly enjoyed having Davi nearby.
Her chest felt warm, and she couldn’t stop smiling just thinking about spending more time adventuring with that man.
"All done, I just collected the last one," he said after pulling out the final root.
Not only had he extracted the roots perfectly, but he had also already cleaned them. His work was as good as a professional gatherer’s.
Lina admired the boy once again, wondering if there was anything he wasn’t good at. He always seemed so reliable, able to do anything with ease. And always with that warm, confident smile.
"There’s really nothing left. I have to head to the lab now, but we can come back tomorrow to check again. Is that okay for you?"
"Yes," she replied shyly. "Just call me whenever it’s best for you..."
She wanted to say more, but her shyness held her back.
Still, she was happy to know they would go out together again the next day. And since the only thing she did was go to Enki, Lina had plenty of free time to join him in exploring whenever he wanted.
On the way back, they didn’t encounter any major challenges. So the two said their goodbyes and went their separate ways.
Watching Davi walk away, Lina felt a slight tightness in her chest, as if a void had taken hold of her. The world didn’t seem as warm when he wasn’t around.
But she just sighed and shook her head, trying to push those silly feelings away.
She had heard the rumors. She knew that boy was always surrounded by stunning, talented girls. How could she possibly compare?
She looked at her own reflection in the glass of a nearby shop. Her messy hair hid her beautiful face, and her overly baggy clothes completely concealed the feminine curves she had.
So, for a moment, she admired a woman walking down the street. The girl was wearing only a top and a short dress, exposing her body as much as possible.
"I wonder if he would look at me if I wore something like that?" The thought popped into the girl’s mind.
She imagined herself posing in the mirror wearing those clothes. And soon her face turned as red as a tomato.
Her legs lost strength, and she almost fainted, such was the shame she felt just thinking about the idea.
Once again, she shook her head violently, pushing the foolish ideas away from her chest. She knew that would never be possible.
Finally, she sighed and decided to return to her house.
In the following days, she was able to meet with Davi a few more times as they searched for the roots.
As expected, the rift was not a big challenge. But each day Lina felt more comfortable around him, to the point that she had even started to talk more.
In a way, the two had become at least a little close.
They even had a conversation outside the rift, during a break between classes.
Furthermore, they completed the project, and even after that, Davi continued to greet Lina and talk to her every now and then, which filled her with happiness.
