Chapter 103: The arrest of Amanda
Chapter 103: The arrest of Amanda
Three days. That was how long it took for everything to come crashing down. He was finished, and they have uncovered everything.
Wein quickly confessed everything he knew, even though it wasn’t much. And with a little investigation,
it was possible to link the attempted murder to Amanda. There was evidence of her ordering it. Furthermore, they even found the fake bank account she had used for the operation.
And, as much as there was still much that needed to be investigated, her end was obvious. For the attempted abuse of power, she had already lost her position and only had to wait for the news, which would probably be even worse.
Amanda’s stiletto heels echoed impatiently against the cold floor of the small room. Unable to stay seated, she began pacing back and forth, trying to calm her racing heart. Her breathing was uneven, each breath short and suffocating.
Her beautiful blonde hair, usually flawless, now looked disheveled, with fine strands sticking to her sweat-dampened forehead. Her once cold and arrogant blue eyes were now brimming with tears, tears she still refused to let fall.
Her hands trembled, and she couldn’t even hold the pen in her fingers with the same steadiness as before. Her pale fingers twisted nervously, as if trying to trap the anxiety itself.
She couldn’t understand. She couldn’t accept it... How? How had everything changed in an instant? Why did her life have to be destroyed like this?
Amanda came to a sudden stop, spinning on her heel, the burgundy silk dress swirling briefly around her slender legs.
She closed her eyes for a moment, trying to calm her nerves. Then, she stared at herself in the small mirror in her sitting room.
Her distorted reflection stared back at her, wide blue eyes, red lips pressed into a tight line.
Her fingers found the pearl necklace she always wore, a costly gift from her father. She clenched the cool beads tightly, as if trying to draw some form of comfort, or an answer, from them.
But the only sounds she could hear were her own ragged breathing and the merciless ticking of the clock on the wall, marking the approach of the inevitable confrontation.
"Since when did I become this pathetic, cowardly woman..." she whispered to herself, trying to force a confident smile onto her face. "I need to be dignified to face her," she muttered, desperately fixing her hair.
Normally, she would have had dozens of servants to take care of that sort of thing, but they had all abandoned her. Just thinking about it made fury swell in her chest, and because of that, she bit her lip until the metallic taste of blood filled her mouth.
But more than anything, the name that stirred the most anger within her was that of the visitor she was expecting: Sophia, her damn niece.
Outside the door, footsteps approached. Amanda’s heart pounded.
The soft click of the lock echoed in the silence of the room.
It was her.
Amanda instinctively crossed her arms, taking on a defensive posture. Anxiously, she gripped her own arm, her red-painted nails digging into her skin.
Still, she tried to puff out her chest with pride, but her body reacted almost subconsciously, stepping backward.
With the sudden movement, she bumped into the small table in the room, knocking over the flower vase that sat atop it.
And there was nowhere else to back up. The room was small, suffocating, with walls that seemed to be closing in... almost like a prison.
"What do you want?" Amanda asked in an aggressive tone, but it sounded more like the bark of a small dog.
No matter how much she barked, there was nothing intimidating about her posture or her situation.
And as Sophia took in the state of her aunt, she smirked mockingly. Then, with firm steps, she advanced toward her.
Seeing this, all Amanda felt was fear.
The woman had always been aggressive, always the one pressuring others, yet there she was, cornered like an animal, waiting for the inevitable moment when she would have to face her.
Her niece’s slightest action already intimidated her.
"You should be more careful, my dear aunt," Sophia said as she picked up the case she had dropped.
Then she stood up, staring at her aunt long in the eyes without saying a word.
Before, the woman could see anyone as inferior. Now, just by observing Sophia’s confident eyes, she felt smaller, intimidated.
"Aren’t you going to sit down?" Sophia finally broke the silence with a soft tone.
Then she sat down slowly in a chair. Following that, with a simple look, she ordered her aunt to do the same.
And, in an almost instinctive reaction, she sat down.
Seeing how desperate and weak her aunt looked, Sophia couldn’t help but smile even more.
She was like a lion that had lost its mane and turned into a small, frightened cat. She no longer had the strength to resist.
It was amusing to think that this woman who was always arrogant and believed herself to be above everything, now bowed respectfully.
"You should just confess your crimes," Sophia said calmly.
She knew that before her was a frightened kitten. And she would certainly pressure that kitten to do what was most convenient for her.
After all, cutting off the hydra’s head was easy, but killing it was almost impossible. In this case, the hydra would be the corruption that permeated all areas of the Belfort family.
No, even deeper, it was the corruption that had taken over Enki entirely. It was precisely this corruption that led Amanda to have all that power.
However, she was just the head of it all. And her aggressive and careless actions made it easy to eliminate her after things had gone wrong.
That being said, there were still hundreds of ministers, police officers, teachers, and many other corrupt officials. All together, they formed a large destructive mass that would slowly corrode everything.
But Amanda undoubtedly had evidence about the illegal actions of many of these people. She would certainly be able to bring many of them down with her.
Of course, it would never be possible to eliminate all corrupt people. But if they eliminated most of the leadership, the problems would decrease greatly.
At the very least, they needed to clean up the high ranks, and the rest would adjust on their own.
"What do you mean by that? I... I didn’t do anything wrong," Amanda said without any conviction.
Seeing this, Sophia slowly crossed her legs while keeping her gaze fixed on Amanda, her lips curved in a calculated smile. She crossed her legs with deliberate slowness, each movement a demonstration of control.
"Nothing wrong?" She laughed, a soft and sharp sound. "You can’t even express your lies with conviction."
Amanda swallowed hard, her fingers trembling slightly in her lap.
"I... I don’t know what you’re talking about." She still tried to deny it, but it was useless.
Sophia leaned forward, her elbows resting on her knees, her gaze piercing.
"Let’s be practical. You hand over names, evidence, everything you know about the corruption in the Belfort family and in Enki... In exchange, I think our relationship can become more friendly from now on."
The blonde preferred not to offer a very specific promise. After all, her aunt was in such a bad position that any help would be welcome.
"Or, if you prefer, you can rot in jail with no one by your side," she said calmly while continuing to stare at her aunt.
"You think you can threaten me?" Her voice faltered, betraying her lack of conviction.
"I can," Sophia said coldly. "And you can’t do anything about it. But..." She smiled, this time with a glint that was almost affectionate in her eyes. "This isn’t a threat, Aunt. It’s an opportunity."
She paused, letting the words sink in.
"Besides... think carefully. If you cooperate, I might be able to ensure you keep a few privileges. A more comfortable cell. Visitation rights. Maybe even a reduced sentence, if your testimony proves useful enough."
Amanda clenched her hands, her nails digging into her own skin.
"And if I refuse?"
Sophia raised an eyebrow, and the smile on her face gradually faded, just as her gaze turned more threatening.
"I can say with certainty, there’s only one choice you won’t live to regret."
Then Sophia leaned in closer, her voice dropping to a chilling whisper.
"Do you really want to die like an abandoned rat?"
Amanda trembled, her face turning pale. Meanwhile, Sophia leaned back in the armchair. Her tone softened once again, almost sweet.
"But it doesn’t have to be like that. Just make the right choice, and everything will get better. Don’t you think you’ve already made enough mistakes in this life because of your pride?"
A heavy silence fell over the room. Amanda took a deep breath, her shoulders slumping as she considered her next move.
"And... if I talk?"
Sophia didn’t hesitate. She placed a recorder on the table and smiled.
"I think we can skip the what-ifs now, Aunt. Tell me everything you know."
Her voice was like an irrefutable command, and with no strength left to resist, Amanda began to speak.
