Chapter 18: Trying To Seduce Me?

Iris’s POV

I shook my head, blocking Lyra’s voice as I headed into the bathroom to take a quick shower. The cool water cascaded over my skin, washing away my exhaustion.

Once I was done, I got dressed into another clean maid’s uniform. I wouldn’t give Kael or anyone else another chance to call me filthy or that I stink, like Zane had earlier. I knew I didn’t stink but his words still hurt me.

Standing in front of my cracked mirror, I gathered my damp hair into a neat bun, securing it with a few pins. My eyes caught on a tube of lip gloss resting on the table. I couldn’t recall how it got there and who kept it there but since it was in my room, I figured it was mine. I twisted the cap open and applied a thin layer to my dry lips, careful not to overdo it. Then I looked at my reflection, admiring myself.

Just then, Lyra’s voice broke through again, playful this time. "You look pretty. Admiring yourself, huh?"

I couldn’t deny it, I did look better. It was as if the shower had given my skin a soft glow, and the lip gloss added a touch of life to my otherwise weary appearance. My eyes seemed brighter and cuter and my lashes still damp from the shower. As I admired myself, the moment shattered at the sound of faint footsteps echoing through the corridor outside my room as if someone was passing by and then a guard’s voice drifted through the open window, commanding as he gave orders to someone nearby which made me come back to my senses, remembering that I had to go to Kael’s room to take his dirty clothes.

Grabbing the empty laundry basket from the corner, I headed for the door. I had work to do, and dawdling wouldn’t help. My destination was Kael’s room, and the thought of facing him sent a ripple of unease through me. Kael, the third shard of the Darius name, was a puzzle I could never quite solve. Unlike Zane, who wore his cruelty like a badge, or Cade, whose arrogance and hot temper filled every room, Kael was cloaked in unreadable stillness. He didn’t taunt me like others, he simply watched wherever his brothers were being cruel to me and never tries to stop them.

There was something haunted behind his gaze and I couldn’t fathom. Among the three, Kael was the most unpredictable. One moment, he might offer a shred of kindness; the next, he could shatter your hope with a single, cutting glance or words.

Reaching his door, I hesitated. It was widely open as my fingers hovered over, unsure whether to knock or go back and return later.

The memory of walking in on him with Liora flashed through my mind, and my stomach churned. I wasn’t ready for that scene. I took a half-step back, reconsidering, when a voice suddenly sliced through the silence from behind me.

"I never knew we were sharing a room." He said sarcastically.

I turned around as Kael stood there, his lips curled into a faint short smile. He leaned casually against the wall, one ankle crossed over the other, his posture deceptively relaxed. He is wearing a royal blue shirt as if hugged perfectly, the top button undone to reveal a glimpse of his collarbone. Over it, he wore a sleeveless black jacket. He likes wearing black sleeveless jacket but unlike Zane, who often wore his jackets bare-chested to flaunt his arrogance alluring chest, Kael always paired his with a shirt which made him more responsible. His brown hair was tousled one side of his face and his eyes, those piercing, storm-brown eyes locked onto mine with an intensity that made my pulse stutter as he chewed his gum nonchalantly, blowing the bubble and making it burst and causing a mess on his lips. I watched as he would use his hands to peal it off from his lips and return the bubble gum back into his mouth and then resume chewing.

Then he broke the silence again.

"Didn’t mean to startle you, Iris," he said, his voice jovial. He pushed off the wall, closing the distance between us in a single, fluid step. "Or maybe I did." He chuckled, standing f in front of me with his both hands across his chest.

I swallowed, clutching the laundry basket tighter. "I’m here to collect your dirty clothes," I said, not tearing my gaze off his. "That’s all." I added.

Kael tilted his head, studying me with that unnerving gaze. His smile widened, but it didn’t reach his eyes. "Is that so? Because you’re standing there like..." He paused, his eyes flicking to my lips, then back to my face. "Maybe you’re trying to impress someone. That lip gloss is new, isn’t it? Trying to seduce me, Iris?" He shot the bubble gum again and leaned back on the wall.

Invincible heat flooded my cheeks, and I glared at him, trying not to snap at him. "It’s just lip gloss, Kael. Don’t flatter yourself. I need to get your laundry and leave." I replied nonchalantly as I tried to talk a step into the room but his words made me halt.

"Wait." He called.

He smiled. "I’m flattered. You look beautiful. Almost makes me forget you’re here to scrub my socks." He stepped closer, his voice dropping to a teasing murmur. "Almost." He added.

I took a step back, snapping at him. "Can you just let me do my job?" I snapped. His proximity was disarming.

Kael raised his hands in mock surrender, but his eyes gleamed with amusement. "Fine, fine." He gestured toward the room. "Go on, then. My laundry’s not going to collect itself."

I brushed past him, my shoulder grazing his jacket as I stepped into the room. The space was sparse but orderly. A single bed with dark sheets, a wooden desk cluttered with books and maps, and a small pile of clothes in the corner. I moved quickly, gathering the shirts and trousers, keeping my eyes down to avoid his gaze. But I could feel him watching me.

"So," he said, his voice casual as he leaned against the doorframe, arms crossed. "Heard you gave Zane a piece of your mind earlier. Bold move, Iris. Stupid, but bold."

I stiffened, my hands pausing over a crumpled shirt. "I don’t need your commentary, Kael."

"Oh, but I’m so good at it," he said, his tone infuriatingly light. "You’ve got fire in you, I’ll give you that. But poking the bear? That’s a dangerous game. Especially when the bear’s got claws."

I shoved the clothes into the basket without giving him a response.

I walked and stood in front of him heads on. "Your words has no effect on me. And I am not afraid."

Kael’s smile faded slightly. "You should be," he said. Then, as if catching himself, he smiled again. "I see it’s going to be fun. Who am I to ruin your fun? Keep playing hero, Iris. Just don’t cry when it bites you."

I glared at him. "Thanks for the advice,"

He chuckled, shaking his head.

I grabbed the last of the clothes and turned to leave but as I reached the door, I saw Zane standing there, beside Kael.
