Chapter 11: They’ll All Pay. Every Single One!
Chapter 11: They’ll All Pay. Every Single One!
Iris’s POV
"Maris! How could you let this happen?" he shouted, his words sharp with rage. "My plate, my personal plate! The sacred plates of our pack!" He repeated. "Do you realize what this means? This was a generational treasure, handed down for centuries! And you let it be destroyed? Do you understand the consequences of your carelessness? It can never be replaced, and you were trusted to protect it!"
Amelia stopped dead in her tracks. Her eyes filled with fear. And she knew this moment could haunt everyone for generations. The consequences of my actions.
I stood slowly, moving to the door to peek through. There, stood Darius. His face was a mask of rage, his eyes blazing as he towered over Maris, who cowered before him at her knees.
"I’m sorry, Alpha," Maris whimpered.
"Sorry?" Darius roared, cutting her off. "You’re the chief maid! That plate was your responsibility, and you failed. Again. If you can’t follow my rules, Maris, then leave my pack. Go back to whatever hole you crawled out of after your husband threw you out!"
My lips twitched, a bitter smile forming at his harsh words towards her but then again, his pack? No, it was my father’s pack, the Blackbane pack, before Darius claimed it through blood and betrayal.
In the other hand, Maris and Darius had never been in good terms considering the fact Maris brought shame into the Darius family the moment her husband threw her out. Despite her being his older sister, that meant nothing to him. Darius would hurl insults, calling her useless, a burden, a bitter old hag who’d driven her husband away with her attitude and lacks a way to keep a man and they whatever the situation may be, a woman shouldn’t leave her husband. That was what Darius believed. But then, Maris would snap back, her voice shrill, but she always crumbled under his wrath. He’d threatened to banish her countless times, reminding her that her place in the pack was by his mercy alone.
Today was no different. Maris’s pleas grew desperate. "Please, Darius, I’ll make it right. I swear it!"
"You’ll make it right?" he sneered, stepping closer until she shrank back. "You can’t replace what’s broken, Maris. You’re lucky I don’t strip you of everything right now."
I turned away from the door, my heart filled with satisfaction. Maris deserved this, but Darius’s cruelty was a reminder of what he was capable of and I don’t regret it. He wasn’t just heartless, he was a monster. Years ago, he’d slaughtered my father’s betas to secure his rule, right in the presence of every pack member as he accused them of having hands in my parents death. He’d banished entire families for being against his rule, leaving them to die without food, water or shelter. Once, when a young omega stole a loaf of bread to feed his starving sister, Darius had him whipped until his back was designed with marks from the severe lashing of whip, then forced the pack to watch as a warning. Maris’s humiliation was nothing compared to that.
Well, I didn’t regret what I’d done. Maris had made my life a living hell since I became a maid. I could still remember how she’d locked me in the cellar as my punishment for three days after she had stolen Darius’ money and accused me of it, with no food and water. Darius was in support. Countless times, she’d spat in my face, called me worthless, a stain on the pack and a murderer. Her cruelty was etched into my bones, and I’d never forgive her. Not now, not ever.
Suddenly, there were approaching footsteps and soon, Scarlett, the assistant chief maid entered. Her eyes raked over me and Amelia as she broke the silence. "The Alpha wants to see all the maids in the throne chamber. Now."
Her tone was as cruel as always, dripping with the same manner Maris wielded so freely. We approached, brushing past her without a word, Amelia trailing behind me. We joined the other maids, a group of twenty, as we shuffled toward the throne chamber.
I and Amelia joined the line, standing in a straight line, heads bowed in respect, as Darius approached. He paced before us, his hands clasped behind his back, his presence suffocating. From the corner of my eye, I could feel his gaze sweeping over us coldly as usual.
Then finally, he spoke. His thick, husky and emotionless voice broke the silence.
"From today," he began, "Maris is no longer the chief maid. She’s been suspended as punishment for her failure."
A gasp rippled through the maids but our heads remained bowed. Maris, standing to the side, fell to her knees, her hands outstretched, clasped together in pleas. "Please, Alpha, forgive me!" she cried. "I’ll do better, I swear!"
I kept my head down. Maris couldn’t admit I’d broken the plates, it was her duty, and if Darius knew the truth, she’d face worse for neglecting it. Her pleas echoed, desperate, but Darius’s expression didn’t soften. He ignored her, turning to Scarlett.
"Scarlett, you’ll replace Maris for the time being," he said. "Understood?"
"Yes, Alpha," she replied with a slight bow.
Maris’s sobs filled the silence as Darius dismissed us with a wave. I filed out with the others, my mind buzzing but suddenly, my eyes fell on Zane who stood at the corner of the room. His cold gaze was on me but I didn’t act afraid. He was like his father after all so I was already prepared for whatever comes my way.
I pushed the thought aside.
Darius’s cruelty was unmatched, but Maris had earned this. Every lash of her tongue, every bruise she’d left on me, had built up to this moment. And I wasn’t done.
Lyra’s voice whispered in my head. "They’ll all pay, Iris. Every single one."
As I returned to my room, the broken mirror caught my reflection again. My eyes burned with rage. Maris was just the beginning.
Everyone who’d hurt me would go down. I’d make sure of it.
