Chapter 51: Ending The Recluse

The chill in the room deepened as Alaric’s voice, edged with ruthless determination, broke the heavy silence. "Continue investigating. If he was sent from the capital, then we have to eliminate him." His words, as cold and sharp as a winter’s gust, seemed to siphon the warmth from the very air.

Agilus, standing opposite him, inclined his head slowly, "When are we setting off?" he inquired.

"When I regained my strength. Perhaps tomorrow." a dark shadow passed over his eyes. They were already delayed by a few days. If those bandits successfully delivered that ’letter’ to the rebels, and the rebels succeeded in handing it to the enemies, then many Northem soldiers would perish.

At the house across the narrow alley, Reya had finished cooking, and a delectable spread was set on the table.

Omega, who had a good night’s sleep, was eyeing the table ravishingly. She swallowed her saliva a few times.

Last night, she shared the room with her brother, who slept on separate beds. Kane had the narrow beds from their old house moved to the new house.

Alpha and Sandoz shared the bed while Lara and Reya slept on a mat they spread on the floor in the living room.

Lara noticed the little girl peering from the kitchen door, her gaze pasted on the table.

"Omega, can you call your brother and Sandoz? Let us have breakfast together."

Omega nodded and hurried to the small backyard. Her brother and Sandoz were fetching water from the well at the far end of the alley. She was waiting for them to call for breakfast.

Lara entered the other room, where the two masters were still catching up. The space was sparse—a single narrow bed lay in the corner, layered with a thin, worn mat that had absorbed the weight of countless memories. The two older men exchanged thoughts in hushed tones that resonated with years of hardship and wisdom.

"Master, breakfast is ready. Does Grandpa Samuel want to come eat with us in the kitchen?" The old man’s nod was slow but determined. He felt a measure of improvement and believed that a little movement—and a generous helping of sunlight—might further soothe his frail constitution.

While helping the old man to his feet, Lara thought of something.

"Master, what is your plan? Do we stay here or go back to Mount Roca?"

"Let us stay here until my Master is well enough and the children are nursed back to health. They are too thin." Jethru’s voice softened when he talked about the children. He thought he would never have a descendant, but who knew he would have two? And one of them looks a lot like Naomi.

Lara hummed.

When they were settled at the table, with the old men occupying the opposite ends of the head of the table, Samuel’s eyes reddened. It was a long time since they had properly eaten and sat at a table.

"Grandpa, I mean Great Grandpa, there is a lot of food. I will not go hungry today," Omega chirped happily. She was seated between Alpha and Sandoz on an extended bamboo bench opposite Lara and Reya.

A lump formed on Jethru’s throat. He vowed that he would not let the little ones go hungry again.

That night, he wanted to ask his master if he wanted to stay in their dwelling in Mount Roca, but after considering the children, he decided against it. The children had already suffered too much; he could not bear for them to continue to suffer, living with him in the mountains.

He planned to purchase a piece of land and build a house. In the past 25 years, he had accumulated a lot of silver from selling pelt and herbs, and it was time to spend it.

It was time for him to leave the mountains, take revenge, and reclaim his master’s school and properties for his grandchildren’s sake.

The Cardils, they have to pay! They not only ruined his life, but they also made his loved ones suffer. They stole his chance to spend a happy life with Naomi and his son, whom he never got a chance to see.

Lara observed her master as his dark brown eyes became stormy and black. Did Omega’s words trigger him? She knew those look too well. Her master was furious.

After breakfast, Jethru, using a sharp knife, cut his waist-length white hair to fall just above his shoulders. He shaved his mustache and beard, and when he was done, Lara was surprised to see the clean look of his master.

He looked younger, and his handsome features were even more pronounced. The resemblance between him and Alpha became even more apparent, especially in their eyes and thick eyebrows.

"Unbelievable! Grandpa, you looked so handsome. I did not recognize you for a moment." Reya, who had just come from the kitchen, whistled to show her admiration.

Alpha and Omega, who came from the back door after throwing the garbage, were taken aback. They looked at their Grandpa, and for a moment, their eyes reddened.

Sandoz, who helped clean the table, was equally surprised.

Only Samuel did not register any change in his facial expression. Jethru was a handsome man. It was one of the reasons his daughter Naomi fell in love with him, and Julian envied him.

He scanned his freshly shaven disciple, who looked only in his late thirties. His glossy white hair did not make him look older but added a mysterious charm. His toned muscles made him even better-looking than the young men in the capital. If he were back in Savadra, many women would still swoon over him.

"I am going to scout for a piece of land to purchase. We cannot stay in this house for long, as it is too small. I will be back before sunset, " he announced, exiting the house.

When he exited the inn, Agilus was in a good mood. He was walking along with a few soldiers, humming a lively tune. When they rounded a corner, he bumped into someone.

Agilus’s breath caught in his throat as he tried to steady himself.

He stepped back to look at the man who bumped into him.

He was ...
