Chapter 158: The Orgin of the Lenard family
"So, Uncle... this is where you’ve been hiding all these years?"
Percival’s voice carried a mix of emotions—relief, disbelief, and a quiet storm of unanswered questions. He had found his sister and now his long-lost uncle. But how had Primo ended up in this remote village on the border?
Primo just hummed. He signalled for Darius to join his other brothers outside. Darius paused before Lara, who gave him a slight pat on the head. Darius stepped back and finger-combed his hair. He threw Lara a curious glance before darting outside.
"What brings you here, Perci?" The older man had overcome his initial shock and was now thinking rationally. "I heard you were in Hainai, but unfortunately, our paths did not cross." He tried to change the topic.
Lara observed Primo closely, her sharp eyes lingering on his face. She was certain he had made deliberate efforts to avoid crossing paths with anyone from the Norse family, and most especially, with General Odin.
Percival stole a furtive glance at Lara. "Trying to convince my sister to come back with us." He sighed, rubbing the back of his neck.
"Huh? Lara?" Primo was confused. "Why would you look for her here of all places?"
"It is because she is here, Uncle. I haven’t introduced you yet." Percival grinned.
Primo’s expression darkened in confusion. His memories of his sister’s only daughter, Freya, were hazy. The boys often traveled to Zamaya, but Lara had always been left behind—it was a grueling three-day journey by carriage, and his sister had been unwilling to part with her. Primo had only seen the girl once, when she was three.
Percival turned to Lara, "Sis, Uncle Primo is Mother’s younger brother," he revealed, his voice carrying a hint of elation.
Lara’s breath caught in her throat, a rush of unexpected emotions washing over her. The revelation stirred something deep within her; it was astonishing to realize that this man was not just a distant figure but a cherished family member—one who shared her mother’s bloodline. Even if her soul was different, she and Primo still shared that same bloodline.
No wonder. When she met the Lenard siblings, she was compelled to help.
In that moment, the world felt beautifully compact and interconnected, a web of relationships that seemed to close around her like a warm embrace. Perhaps the heavens pitied her and gave her many people that cared.
"Nice meeting you Uncle Primo. I am sorry, I have no recollection," Lara said, regret evident in her eyes.
"Lara? She is Lara?" Primo Lenard looked at Kane incredulously before his gaze drifted back to Perci. "You are joking, right?"
Lara cleared her throat.
"I have to pose as Kane Mendel as it would be difficult for a girl to deliver the message to a camp full of men." She explained.
Primo’s thoughts were like the dust swirling in the whirlwind. He could not comprehend how the well-protected only daughter of the Norse family had landed in the borders and had to act like a man to protect herself.
"How could...."
"I was abducted two years ago. I got hurt, and that was when I lost my memory." She explained.
Still, Primo was frowning. How could she be kidnapped?
What about his sister? Since he left Zamaya, he had no news about his family. Even when he marched into war two years ago, he remained low-key, not wanting to be noticed by General Odin.
"How are your grandparents and your mother?" Primo trembled, and his voice was hoarse.
A fleeting sadness crossed Percival’s face. He dared not look at his uncle in the eyes when he replied softly. "Grandpa fell off a horse and died five years ago."
Primo’s legs lost their strength. He clutched the armrest of the bamboo chair as his body sank into it.
His father died. And he had not been able to see him for the last time. Just how unfilial was he?
Delia took his hand into hers, and she squeezed it tightly. "It is okay. We did not know. Besides, the reason why we are here was because of Father. You already did more than enough." Delia comforted him.
"Was it really an accident?" Primo asked, his voice just above a whisper.
Percival frowned.
"Uncle, are you doubting that it was not an accident?" Well, Percival was just a child then. He just heard his father said that it was an accident.
"Ah, no. It is not that. Besides, it was a long time ago already." Primo added hoarsely.
Lara glanced at him. He could feel that the man who was supposed to be her uncle was in possession of many secrets.
"Uncle, I am just curious. So, why are you here? Is this a form of banishment?" Lara had heard stories that people who had sinned against the country or against a high-ranking noble were sent to the villages at the border.
Primo stiffened. Why did she have to rub salt into my wound?
Seeing Primo’s expression, Lara knew that she was spot on.
"Uncle, is it true?"
"Perci, some things are better left in the past, " he said simply. He looked at his wife, who smiled at him, giving him the reassurance he needed.
"But what crime did you do to deserve this banishment?" Percival stood from his seat and started pacing in front of the others.
"Perci, it is not as simple as you think." Primo gently said.
"Then, Uncle, please explain," the young man paused and looked at his uncle, who was sitting uncomfortably in the chair.
Primo sighed. He might as well spill the beans.
"You know that your maternal family is rich and influential in Zamaya, right?"
Percival nodded
"It was because of the wealth and the influence that your grandfather was framed. The evidence was conclusive. So the head of the Lenard Family was accused and found guilty of embezzlement and rebellion."
Primo’s face turned ugly. For a moment, Lara saw the familiar glint in his eyes. The same glint that appeared when someone sought the enemy for revenge.
"How can I standby and do nothing? I, the useless one in the family, told myself that it was time I gave back to the family. So I took the responsibility and offered to be punished on Father’s behalf. And that’s how we were thrown out here in this village.
