Chapter 93 - 93: Meeting Kong

William's perception about Kong's knowledge of what he did back at the forest deepened when he heard these words. Least to his knowledge that this meeting wasn't going to be a simple one, at least not just limited to what he did back at the forest or how he helped Berry recover from her illness.

"So… You were a porter a few days ago, is that correct?"

As William followed him into that room, William found a small room as the old man described.

It was only five metres wide and ten metres long. In the middle, a small oval shaped wooden table was there alongside six small seats where the two sat opposite to each other.

When they sat down, the old patriarch said with a serious look over his face.

"Don't you need to activate the protective enchantment here first?" William slowly said, looking calm and collected despite being in front of the famous Long clan's monster.

"Oh, for a young fellow and an ex-porter, you know a lot," the old patriarch laughed, "don't worry, the moment I passed through this door, these enchantments got activated."

"Yes, I was a porter before."

"And you are now a spirit master, right?" Kong kept his eyes glaring over William who felt the pressure but wasn't affected by it.

"I'm a bronze grade spirit master," William said while keeping his face calm.

"That's something amazing," Kong paused before adding, "I listened to my little darling about what you did. In fact, I even doubt you realise how immense this help of yours is, right?"

"Well… I just helped a friend in need, why think about reasons and other useless stuff?" William shrugged, and that made Kong nod.

"That's indeed a very promising mindset and view to the world. But that won't negate what you did. Tell me, how do you expect me to reward you?"

"No need," William felt like this was a tricky question.

"You have to be rewarded, handsomely as well. Or else, other clans will place dirt on our faces," Kong stretched both arms, as if this was something out of his control.

"Then…" William paused, thought about lots of things, "how about this… Why won't you give me crystals and materials?"

"Oh, just these?!" Kong paused, "how about something much grander? Something lots of masters dream about?"

William didn't need to listen more to get what Kong wanted to offer. "Thanks, venerable senior, but I already have a master."

"This…" Kong already expected this. After all he learnt about William's mysterious master. But still hearing such straightforward rejection was a bit harsh.

Any spirit master below dark gold grade would feel honoured and appreciate such an offer at least. And those in dark gold grade would look at him in respect and veneration.

But what he felt from the little kid in front of him was… Nothing! Not awe, not fear, and surely not getting affected by the pressure of his presence at all.

This was the first time for Kong to meet William face to face like this. Even when he spied on him, he never had the chance to speak with this kid personally.

"You do know that you are full of mysteries? In my eyes, you are a hard kid to read," Kong decided to jump over William's unexpected attitude and paused for a moment before heavily adding, "and I can't hide it, I'm envious of all the secrets you got."

"Every spirit master has his own secrets. And I'm not different from them."

"But no one has such secrets, or weird ways to do things in our world," the things Kong meant and what William got from his words were totally different.

The two exchanged silent glances for a few seconds before Kong said: "How old are you by the way?"

"Old enough to value the presence of a master in one's life," William's answer made the old patriarch gaze deeper over him.

Kong respected how William respected his master. And yet he still felt a little bitter.

Everything pointed out that William wasn't a simple kid, not even close from being a normal one. Even his selection of words left an impression inside Kong.

"Let's speak about the reward then," Kong knew the plan he got in his mind wasn't going to work, "I'll make sure the clan's elders will prepare something suitable for what you did."

"Thanks," William cheered up. He wanted crystals to purchase lots of stuff, at least weapons and such. As for materials, too much of them wasn't a bad thing at any given time.

"How about Berry?"

"What about her?"

"What's the relation between the two of you is like? Friends? Or closer?" Kong looked deeply into William's eyes, and the latter didn't even flinch when he responded.

"In fact, there is nothing between me and her," William said the truth, "she just saved me a couple of times before. And it's just normal for me to repay her debts."

"Don't tell me you don't like my clan's precious gem!" Kong threw in a bait to see what William truly thought about Berry.

"I'm just saying we didn't interact long enough, didn't really know each other," William shrugged, drawing a clear line in this matter.

Kong wanted to know lots of things from William. So trying to pressure him wouldn't work. And asking directly failed already.

So, Kong had to take a much slower approach with William. After all, this little kid proved to be quite formidable in using words, able to extricate himself from any situation Kong forced upon him.

Kong decided to use Berry as a bridge between him and William.

"I can't dream about getting over the clouds without learning how to fly first, right?"

"Such wise words coming from such a small kid… Who are you? Are you perhaps a son of a strong master perhaps?" Kong finally asked about something he wanted to know.

Even after speaking with Willian for a few minutes, Kong felt the direction this discussion was heading was way off what he initially expected and planned.
