Chapter 29: 28 - The fate of Ayra
When Daphne said she would accompany me to the private hot springs of the Valakys family, I never imagined we’d end up sharing the same pool—a small natural spring, hidden deep within a cave as white as fresh snow, where the water is so hot it nearly boils on its own. Though, to be fair, I might be making it even hotter just by being here. Daphne stepped in first, completely bare—leaving me with no choice but to follow, despite the crushing weight of embarrassment. Our clothes now rest on smooth, flat stones beside the steaming pool.
Her body... my god, it’s absolutely breathtaking! I had my suspicions, but with all those heavy coats she always wears, it was impossible to know for sure. Her hips are rather narrow—overall, she’s quite slender—but her breasts are the exception: maybe because her frame is so delicate, but I swear they’re even larger than Sasha’s. Her long blonde curls, floating gently on the water’s surface, make her look like a modern-day Venus from Botticelli’s brush.
The pool is so small that even the slightest movement makes our bodies brush against each other. Out of shame—and maybe a little deference, since she’s twice my age—I try to make myself as small as possible, pulling my knees tightly to my chest. That way, I can also keep my friend down there from making things even more awkward. But she doesn’t do the same. Every now and then, she shifts slightly, her feet or thighs brushing against me.
To her, this situation is probably completely normal—Ayra has told me countless times that nudity is only a taboo in the human world, while among vampires, it’s nothing unusual—but staying indifferent in front of this naked goddess of beauty... not even Dorje could pull that off! I have to find something to talk about, anything, before Daphne’s massive, incredible breasts drive me insane!—Her nipples seem to be staring at me like two unblinking eyes, trying to hypnotize me.
«You and Clotilde were talking for quite a while earlier,» I remark, taking a bite of the meal Daphne kindly provided—a slimy, green sea creature that looks anything but appetizing but, according to her, is a rare delicacy in Mildelar. Its taste and texture vaguely remind me of shrimp, though it has a sharp, acidic kick. «I’m guessing you were discussing what happened in Noxscura.»
She nods. «Yes. Unfortunately, this is an incident of unprecedented gravity. Those bastards from Crimson Requiem have never dared go this far before—they usually limit their attacks to the kingdom’s outer regions. Luckily, the orcs are tireless workers and have already begun working day and night to rebuild the historic district.»
The orcs...? I assume they’re among the enslaved races Vespera mentioned. If they’re even half as massive and powerful as I imagine, then the sheer might of the Scarlet Army must be beyond comprehension to have forced them into relentless labor.
«As you can imagine, I’m not authorized to reveal anything beyond what you already know. But there is something I need to discuss with you... it concerns Ayra.»
Daphne’s expression darkens, and then—once again—she shifts her position. She turns over onto her stomach, her firm yet modest buttocks rising above the water’s surface like two small islets. Her legs extend fully toward me, slightly apart, her ankles resting on my shoulders. A position that—inevitably—gives me an unobstructed view of the scenery between her thighs.
I freeze, unable to breathe.
«Vespera and her henchmen are the main culprits behind yesterday’s disaster, but they’re not the only reason it happened...»
Her voice wavers, heavy with sorrow—she sounds like she’s about to cry. Maybe that’s why she turned away, showing me her back.
«A large part of the destruction was caused by Ayra... With no control over her Shadowshaper form—the ultimate manifestation of her Innatus, Umbral
—her powers spiraled out of control, leveling the entire historic district and claiming countless lives.»Yes, I remember it all too well. Unfortunately. The terror Ayra unleashed in that form is burned into my mind, tormenting me even in last night’s nightmares. If not for Daphne’s timely intervention, I would have been reduced to dust by the shockwave from the clash between Vespera’s halberd and my master’s sword. A catastrophe that—apparently—could have been avoided if Ayra had better control over her power.
«Since she is a princess, the truth has been covered up, with all the blame placed solely on Vespera. But that’s not all—her uncontrolled energy also disrupted the guards’ teleportation magic, preventing them from intervening in time. The tragedy was barely contained, and that is something my father cannot accept...»
Daphne’s voice grows even more melancholic.
«That’s why, once she wakes up, Ayra will undergo brutal training under Clotilde. Our father, Drakhul, has given Clotilde strict orders: she has one week to ensure that Ayra masters her Innatus perfectly. If she fails...»
Daphne’s sorrow is no longer masked.
«...If Ayra cannot control her powers in time... Clotilde has been ordered to kill her...»
«HAVING HER OWN DAUGHTER KILLED BY HER SISTER?!» I explode, my fury erupting at Daphne’s shocking revelation. «WHAT KIND OF SANE FATHER WOULD EVER GIVE SUCH AN ORDER?!»
«Do not ever speak of my father that way again, or it will be the first time I harm a human!» Daphne snaps, her voice sharp with rage and tension—probably fueled by the tragic fate awaiting her beloved little sister. I freeze, unable to breathe.
«He is a great king, the greatest Mildelar has ever known! And as such, he cannot allow his kingdom and his people to suffer because of my sister’s weaknesses, even if it means killing his daughter. If Ayra were to lose control of her powers again, it would be a catastrophe!»
That was the question posed to us, a paradox I never bothered to answer—but now, King Drakhul is facing it firsthand.
Sacrificing a single innocent life to save many others? The truth is, there’s no right answer—any choice would be the wrong one. The only hope is that Ayra can achieve the impossible and master her Innatus in such a short time. I don’t know how much I can do to help her, but I’ll do everything in my power to support her!
«Kajetan’s match will begin soon,» Daphne says as she rises to her feet—the water streaming from her golden curls, cascading down her flawless, breathtaking curves, exposing every inch of her perfection before my eyes. «I suggest you watch. I’m sure you’ll find it quite enlightening.»
