Chapter 43: Rune Compatibility and Resonance.

Chapter 43: Rune Compatibility and Resonance.

The soft glow of the evolution chamber dimmed behind him as Ren returned to his dorm, footsteps light and quiet.

A day had passed with nothing particularly explosive—just a calm routine of classes, training, and weaving practice.

He’d trained his body during the day and pushed his skills by evolving muscle memory or instincts in the evolution chamber through the night, steadily growing more in tune with his weaver instincts and kusarigama skill level.

But now, the room was still. Lia had gone to the training hall for a late-night training session again, and for once, Ren found himself completely alone.

He flopped onto the couch with a soft sigh, eyes drifting over to the book resting on his lap. Rune Compatibility and Control: Volume I.

A mouthful of a title, but the knowledge inside was anything but dull. Lia had spent her last points on it, and honestly, it might’ve been the best gift he’d ever received—aside from his second life, of course.

As his fingers turned the final page, a shiver of excitement ran down his spine.

"This is insane..." he muttered under his breath, eyes gleaming.

For once, he almost wished he’d gone to a Carver Academy instead. Not that he regretted weaving, never that.

But the depth, the complexity, the pure strategy behind rune mastery was dazzling. It wasn’t just slapping a rune on your body and punching harder.

No. It was an art form. And this final Chapter? It was a game-changer.

To understand Rune Compatibility, the book had explained, you first needed to grasp something called Resonance. And wow, did that concept flip everything he knew upside down.

Resonance wasn’t just a fancy term for syncing up with your rune. It was the mystical moment where you and your rune didn’t feel like two separate entities anymore.

It was the feeling of breathing as one. Thinking as one. Moving as one. And when that happened, when that click occurred, the effect was explosive.

Picture this. If Lia’s stage 1 flame rune normally let her punch hard enough to blow apart a two-meter-wide boulder, resonance meant the same punch with the same rune and same stamina cost could blow apart a four-meter boulder.

That was double the destruction for the same energy spent! Some effects even evolved entirely during resonance.

What was once a slow, steady burn could become a flash explosion. What was a defensive shield might morph into a spiked barrier that lashed back at attackers.

Ren’s fingers drummed rapidly on the edge of the desk, his mind spinning.

So you could... upgrade your powers without spending more stamina. Without leveling up. All just by getting good enough with your own rune?

Yes. That was where compatibility came in.

Rune Compatibility was the measure of how in tune you were with a rune. It wasn’t something you could brute force. You had to train with it, use it, meditate on it.

You had to know its strengths, its quirks, even its tantrums. Every rune was like a partner with a personality, and until you danced with it long enough to know its rhythm, you couldn’t hope to resonate with it consistently.

There were four stages:

Low Compatibility: 25% chance of resonance. You could get lucky, but don’t count on it.

Mid Compatibility: 50% chance. A coin flip. Much better, but still inconsistent.

High Compatibility: 75% chance. The mark of a trained warrior.

Sublime Compatibility: 100% chance. This was where legends lived. Every time you used that rune, it resonated. No guessing. No hoping. Just raw, brutal reliability.

Ren stood up and stretched, pacing now, his mind revving like a machine. All this time, he’d been treating runes as single-use weapons—activate, effect, cooldown.

And yes, not only did they drain stamina, they also had cooldowns before they could be used again.

His momentum transfer rune activation had a cooldown of 3 seconds which was ridiculously short for a stage 1 rune.

It was kinda part of the reason why he chose jt in the first place.

But what if... what if you could reach Sublime Compatibility with multiple runes? Stack resonances? Layer special effects? The possibilities were wild.

And with his evolution forge, an insane idea was developing at light speed inside his head.

What if he could evolve resonance? What jf he was able to push each rune that he would ever carve to the sublime compatibility? Was there a stage past sublime?

The possibilities were endless. He would become an absolute monster if all his runes could reach sublime compatibility.

That was almost too unfair for his enemies!

But the book didn’t stop there. Nope. It went even deeper. Into something called Resonance Control.

Now that was the true cherry on top.

Ren turned to the window with a calm smirk, like he’d just remembered a secret no one else knew.

He sat cross-legged on the bed, hands behind his head as he spoke aloud to himself, partly to make sense of it all and partly because talking helped the ideas click better.

"So resonance is when your rune goes Ultra Instinct and gives you supercharged powers," he said with a smirk.

"But resonance control is like... being able to stay in Ultra Instinct longer than the other guy."

The way the book explained it, resonance was like a lightning strike—intense, overwhelming, but brief. It burned bright and died away soon after.

But with resonance control, you could stretch that lightning bolt longer. Extend the duration. Make it last just a bit more. And in a fight, those extra seconds could mean everything.

Let’s say a resonance normally lasted 10 seconds. Someone who had trained resonance control to Stage 1 would get a 10% increase, so their resonance would now last 11 seconds.

Not huge, but noticeable. At Stage 2, it’d last 12 seconds. And at Stage 3, it’d last 13 full seconds of enhanced power and speed.

That didn’t sound like much on paper, but in actual battle? That was forever.

"Imagine both people activate the same rune," Ren muttered, eyes flicking up to the ceiling as if visualizing it.

"Boom, resonance kicks in. But mine lasts 3 seconds longer? That’s three extra seconds of me swinging my kusarigama at full power while the other guy’s stuck breathing hard and regretting life choices."

He laughed to himself, proud of the mental image. He could already see the shocked face of some poor fool who thought the fight was over, only for Ren to say, "Surprise, mine lasts longer!" and proceed to bonk them into the nearest wall.

But then his smile faded slightly as another thought hit him like a slow slap.

"...Wait. What even is the resonance effect of my rune?"

Ren blinked, genuinely confused for a second. His Stage 1 rune was all about momentum transfer.

It was a crazy cool effect where he could literally transfer any gathered momentum from one part of his body to the other seamlessly. But... how did resonance change that?

He tried to imagine it. Would the resonance cause his attacks to double in force? Or maybe make the build-up of momentum happen faster?

Or what if it let him store momentum over several moves and unleash it all in one insane strike?

That last one made his eyes widen. "That’d actually be so cool..."

But there was no way to be sure without testing it. His resonance hadn’t triggered often enough to see a pattern, which meant his compatibility was probably still low.

In fact, it hadn’t triggered at all. It was almost pitiful. Maybe 5% at best. He needed to raise that. Fast.

As if summoned by his doubts, the image of Mirabella popped into his mind. That smug, battle-crazed silver haired bombshell with attacks like meteors and a voice that practically oozed "I’m better than you."

Ren sighed dramatically, dragging his hands down his face.

"Yeahhh... She probably already has High Compatibility with at least a rune. Maybe even Stage 2 Resonance Control. Knowing her luck, she’s out there chewing on ice compatibility potions for breakfast."

He let out a groan and rolled onto his back, staring at the ceiling with dead fish eyes. "I’m probably gonna lose."

A pause.

Then he sat up and laughed. Genuinely, loudly, and with a spark of defiance.

"But I’ll lose with style," he grinned. "Nah, scratch that, I’ll win with style."

Because even if she had more experience, more raw power, and the power of a grenade, Ren had one thing going for him: The evolution forge!

But more than that, he was hungry for power. For exploiting every piece of power this cheat had to offer. If he couldn’t match Mirabella in status and background, he’d beat her with his cheat

Smarter. Trickier. Weirder.

The classic Ren formula.

And that meant... it was experiment time.

Ren jumped to his feet and pulled open his storage pouch with a dramatic flourish, like a magician about to pull out a rabbit.

But instead of a rabbit, he pulled out two glowing scrolls, their runes softly pulsing with life like lines etched in magical ink.

These were the Stage 1 and Stage 2 Runes for the Phantom Panther, which was the first rune he’d successfully carved into his flesh.

The first scroll shimmered with silver lines, elegant and sleek. The second was darker, more jagged, with streaks of indigo slashes running through it.

"Alright, my mysterious little panther buddy," Ren said, unrolling both scrolls on the desk and cracking his knuckles. "Let’s see what you’ve got."

The reason he brought them out now was simple; it was time to choose an evolution path.

He needed to choose a suitable evolution path for his rune and even commence the evolution of his stage 2 rune.

So this was going to be the start of a deep, magical, and very Ren-style research session. Part science, part madness, part "Let’s see what happens if I poke this."

"I hope it doesn’t mutate," he said, grinning as he pulled out a quill.

Then he added, "But if it does mutate... it better be awesome."
