Chapter 213: burst of energy

Liss turned suddenly, grabbing his shoulders with a burst of energy, her bare body pressing against him as she pulled him into a tight hug.

Her breasts pressed firmly against his chest, soft and warm through the bodysuit, her nipples brushing the fabric, sending a jolt of heat through him.

She kissed his cheek, then his jaw, her lips lingering, her breath hot against his skin.

Her forehead pressed to his, her eyes locked on his, electric currents dancing in their depths.

"You’re the best," she whispered, her voice low, fervent, her body radiating warmth and gratitude. "The damn best."

Kael chuckled, his hands settling on her waist, his fingers brushing the curve of her hips, the black thong a stark contrast against her pale skin.

"Let’s make sure no one hears about this."

"Too late," she teased, her smirk widening, her chest still pressed to his, a playful spark in her eyes. "Already chirped it on Chirper."

They both laughed, the sound warm, cutting through the bunker’s sterile hum.

Liss and Kael climbed the stairs from her basement training bunker, their bodies slick with sweat, the air still humming with the aftershock of her lightning.

Liss had thrown on a loose sweatshirt and shorts, the fabric clinging to her toned curves, her blonde ponytail swaying with each step.

Kael’s arms were bandaged, his palms tender but healing, his torn coat slung over his shoulder.

Her mother waited in the kitchen with a spread—sliced mangoes, fresh toast, a jug of chilled citrus juice—and a teasing smile that mirrored Liss’s.

"You look like you got zapped by a microwave," her mom said, setting a plate before Kael, her blue eyes glinting with warmth.

"He kind of did," Liss quipped, her smirk widening as she slid onto the couch beside him, her thigh brushing his.

Kael raised an eyebrow, wincing as he reached for the juice glass, his palms stinging. "You’re lucky I’m not charging you for this."

Liss laughed, snatching the glass from him and holding a slice of mango to his lips, her fingers grazing his chin with a care she didn’t voice.

"Open up, hero." She fed him bite by bite, brushing crumbs from his jaw with a tenderness that felt intimate, her blue eyes locked on his, a playful spark dancing in their depths.

"So," she said between her own bites, her tone casual but probing, "think it’s working? For real?"

Kael nodded, chewing thoughtfully, his gaze steady.

"You’re adapting. Your body’s learning to handle the extra output. It’ll take time, but you’ll cross that S-Class threshold."

"S-Class Lightning Lass," Liss whispered, her smile fierce, predatory, her voice low with ambition. "Sounds like a headline."

They finished eating, the kitchen warm with laughter and the clink of glasses.

Liss drove Kael back to the Haven, her sports car purring through the city’s neon haze, her long legs working the pedals with ease.

Kael stepped out just before Rhea was due back, waving as Liss peeled away, her lingering smile a silent promise of more to come.

The Next Day

Kael wiped sweat from his brow, as he just returned from relieving himself in the bathroom after denying Freya’s sultry invitation to her bed.

Knock Knock

Kael opened the Haven’s front door, his shirt clinging to his chest, his breath still uneven.

Liss stood there, her midnight-blue armor gleaming, ivory plating accentuating her lean, powerful frame.

Her blonde hair was tied back, her blue eyes sharp with amusement, but her lips twitched as she tossed a newspaper at him.

The front page screamed Rhea’s name, a bold headline touting her as a promising S-Class hero, her crimson hair blazing in the photo.

"Are you out of your fucking mind, Kael?" Liss shouted, her voice echoing through the courtyard, loud enough to carry into the Haven.

But she winked and gave him a smile, a subtle signal—this was an act, Kael’s plan to let Freya overhear, to let her know what she thinks of them.

Kael played along, crossing his arms, his smirk faint but cooperative. "What the hell’s wrong with you?"

She stepped closer, her armor catching the morning light, her voice sharp but laced with a staged fury.

"Your little massage gig must be raking it in, huh? Kneading rich backs to fund this circus?"

Kael forced a grin, ignoring the jab. "It pays the bills."

She laughed, sharp and mocking. "Massage boy turned villain tamer. You’re a fucking character, Kael."

But her eyes softened for a split second, before she leaned in, closing the distance.

Her lips crashed into his, firm and deep, warm from the sun, glossed with a hint of citrus that teased his senses.

Her gloved fingers cupped his cheek, guiding him into the kiss, her body pressing close, the static in her skin tingling against his.

Kael kissed back, his hands finding her waist, the armor cool under his touch, the heat of her body seeping through.

They parted, her forehead resting against his, her breath warm against his lips. "The Hero Association’s watching me now," she whispered, her voice low, urgent. "I seriously, can’t bring you anyone without getting flagged."

Kael nodded, his voice soft, steady. "It’s fine. I’ll handle it."

Her smile returned, fierce and promising. "But once I hit S-Class? I’ll bring you dozens."

She kissed him again, slower, sensual, her lips lingering, her breath brushing his jaw, a quiet promise of more.

"I’m meeting Rhea now," she said, pulling back, her eyes glinting. "I will warn her like you said. Then we’re training again, right?"

Kael smirked, brushing a thumb across his lips, still tingling from her kiss. "Yup. I’ll get ready by then."

Later

Rhea didn’t take Liss’s warning well.

They met at a ground by the sewers, the air thick with tension.

Liss stood tall, her suit gleaming, her blue eyes cold as she faced Rhea, whose crimson hair flared in the wind, her fists clenched, flames flickering at her knuckles.

"Stay in your limits, sweetheart," Liss said, her tone cutting, her smirk sharp. "You’re not as strong as you think, and torching low-level villains doesn’t make you special."

Rhea’s teeth gritted, her amber eyes blazing, but she held her tongue, knowing better than to show weakness.

Her flames flared briefly, then died, she was silent.

But she hated her and wanted to get stronger than her no matter what and wipe that smug look off her face
