Chapter 207: You use shadows too?
Chapter 207: You use shadows too?
It shattered, falling in pieces to the floor.
Tila gasped, her powers surging, black shadows curling around her fingertips like eager flames, dancing in the moonlight.
Her black eyes widened, meeting the Reaper’s, a spark of awe and something warmer in their depths.
"You use shadows too?"
The Reaper’s smile was slow, intimate, her red eyes holding Tila’s like a trap. "We have the same type of powers, you and I."
She turned to Lila, her gaze expectant, a challenge in her crimson stare. "Your turn, quiet one."
Lila’s fingers tightened in her lap, her body still.
After a long pause, she leaned forward, baring her neck and the collar which suppressed her powers.
The Reaper’s hand moved, shadows flowing, and with another crack, the collar fell, Lila’s powers stirring—a wisp of darkness flickering at her palm before fading into the night.
The Reaper leaned closer, her breath brushing Lila’s ear, her voice a soft, taunting purr.
"Not a word from you. What’s keeping that pretty mouth shut?"
Lila’s head tilted, her voice soft but steel-edged, a quiet defiance that cut through the Reaper’s allure. "Nothing to say. I don’t waste words."
She leaned back, folding her arms, her gown catching the moonlight, a shimmer of resolve in her stillness.
The Reaper’s smirk widened, amused by the challenge, and she slid back into the driver’s seat, the engine purring as the car rejoined the highway.
The synthwave pulsed, a restless heartbeat in the silence.
Then the Reaper spoke, her voice casual but laced with intent, a siren’s call wrapped in shadow. "I gotta to be honest, I need a favor, Tila."
Tila leaned forward, her black eyes glinting with curiosity, drawn to the Reaper’s dangerous charm. "Name it."
The Reaper’s gaze stayed on the road, her tone deceptively light, but her words carried a weight that chilled the air. "I want Kael."
The car’s atmosphere froze, the words a blade slicing through the night.
Lila’s head snapped up, her voice sharp, unyielding, cutting through the tension like a whip.
"No."
The Reaper’s eyebrow arched, her red eyes flicking to Lila in the rearview, a spark of intrigue in their depths, her smile teasing but probing.
"What’s her deal?" she asked, nodding toward Lila, her tone laced with mock curiosity.
Tila chuckled, a nervous edge to it, trying to defuse the tension, her fingers brushing her newly freed neck.
"Oh, that? They worked in a massage parlor together a while back. Also lately, Kael probably got in her head with all that ’rehab’ nonsense. She’s soft for him."
The Reaper’s laugh was low, sultry, joining Tila’s, a shared amusement that filled the car with a dangerous warmth.
But Lila’s voice sliced through, cold and unwavering, a steel edge that silenced their mirth.
"Leave him out of this. Anything else—fine. But not him."
The Reaper’s gaze sharpened, her smile fading, a predator scenting resistance, her fingers tightening on the wheel, a subtle flex that hinted at her hunger. "You care that much, huh?"
Lila didn’t answer, her eyes hidden, her fingers clenching her gown, the fabric straining under her grip, her knuckles pale, a silent storm brewing beneath her calm.
Tila sighed, leaning back, her tone placating, her black eyes flicking to Lila with a mix of exasperation and fondness. "She’s like that. Gets attached when she shouldn’t."
The Reaper drove in silence, the highway stretching endless, her gloved hands steady, her presence a dark allure that seemed to pull at the twins like a tide.
Then she spoke again, her voice low, persuasive, a promise wrapped in velvet, her words curling around them like smoke. "I want Kael because he’s valuable. To be precise, his powers are what I want. With him, we can flip the pillars, corrupt the heroes, rebuild the villain network stronger than ever."
Her smile darkened, a glint of ambition in her red eyes, her posture shifting slightly, the curve of her shoulders a subtle invitation to join her vision.
"It’s a win for us if Kael joins the dark side."
Lila stayed silent, her grip on her gown unrelenting, the moonlight catching a flicker of resolve in her shadowed face, a defiance that burned quietly but fiercely.
Tila shifted, her voice softer, almost reluctant, her fingers tracing the seat’s leather, a nervous habit. "Kael’s not like that. He believes in his rehab thing. Thinks he can save people."
The Reaper’s smile returned, slow and wicked, her red eyes glinting in the rearview, a predator savoring the game. "Then we’ll teach him how to break them instead."
Lila’s voice cut through the car’s tense air, sharp and resolute, her curly hair swaying as she leaned forward, "Kael’s what he calls a true hero. He won’t join you. Not at any cost."
The Reaper’s smile didn’t falter, but her eyes narrowed, a dangerous spark flickering in their crimson depths.
She tilted her head, her gloved hands flexing on the wheel, her voice low, dripping with dark promise. "Oh, I’ll make him, little one. Whatever it takes. Torture, pain, breaking every bone in his body—I have my ways."
Lila’s eyes flashed, her hands clenching her gown, the fabric straining under her grip. "No."
The Reaper’s gaze locked on her through the mirror, her amusement sharpening into something colder, more predatory. "No? You think you can stop me?"
Lila’s jaw tightened, her voice steady, unyielding. "I will."
The Reaper’s laugh was soft, chilling, her red eyes gleaming with delight. "Will you, now?"
Tila shifted, her black eyes darting between Lila and the Reaper, her lean frame tense.
She leaned forward, her voice cautious but probing, trying to defuse the escalating tension.
"Why go after Kael? There are other ways to corrupt heroes—lure them with money, blackmail, force, whatever. Why him?"
The Reaper’s smile widened, her tone turning almost reverent, a dark hunger threading through her words.
"Those are temporary, Tila. Fleeting. Gold fades, threats break, blackmail runs dry. But Kael’s powers—his empathetic resonance—can twist their souls permanently. Turn them into villains fueled by rage, pain, despair. Unbreakable. Eternal." Her fingers tapped the wheel, a slow, her posture radiating a seductive confidence that filled the car like smoke.
Lila’s voice sliced through, sharp and final, her body rigid. "Stop the car. I don’t like this. I won’t go against Kael."
The Reaper’s eyes flicked to her, her smile fading, replaced by a cold, calculating stare.
Lila continued, her voice steady despite the tremor in her hands. "If that’s why you freed us, I’m sorry—your efforts are in vain."
Tila leaned closer to Lila, her whisper loud, urgent, her violet eyes wide with alarm. "Lila, this is a bad move. She’s the Reaper—an S-Class villain. Dangerous. You don’t want to piss her off."
"I don’t care," Lila said, her tone unwavering, her gaze locked on the Reaper’s reflection, a quiet fire burning in her dark eyes.
The Reaper’s laugh was low, almost affectionate, but laced with menace.
"I liked you better when you were quiet, little one." She turned her head slightly, her red eyes shifting to Tila, her voice a velvet challenge. "What about you, sister? Are you in?"
Tila hesitated, her fingers twitching, her gaze flicking to Lila’s resolute face.
She exhaled, her voice soft but firm, a reluctant loyalty surfacing. "If Lila’s out, I’m out too."
Lila’s hand moved to the door handle, her fingers curling around it, ready to push it open.
"We’re leaving," she said, her tone final, her body poised to exit.
But before she could move, a sharp click echoed through the car, the doors locking with a mechanical snap.
The air grew heavier, the shadows in the corners seeming to pulse, alive with the Reaper’s power.
Her voice dropped, a dangerous whisper that slithered through the car like venom, her red eyes glinting with cruel amusement.
"If that’s how it is, then I don’t need you. Time to have some fun."
