Chapter 202: collapsed

"My BOOOOOBS!"

Kael leapt sideways, his heart hammering as he dodged a blind swing from Whiplash’s fist, her pained snarl echoing in the dim basement.

The muscular man charged next, a hulking mass of rippling muscle, his eyes blazing with intent to crush.

Kael ducked low, his fingers snagging the man’s belt in a desperate yank.

The pants slid down, tangling the guy’s legs mid-stride, and he crashed headfirst into Whiplash’s crouched form with a yelp and a string of curses.

The two collapsed in a chaotic heap, limbs flailing, her whip skittering across the concrete.

Kael didn’t pause to gloat.

He bolted, boots pounding the cold floor, sprinting through the maze of concrete pillars in the hospital’s basement.

His lungs burned, his thighs screamed, but he was moving—alive, for now.

The flickering lights cast jagged shadows that seemed to twist after him, mocking his escape.

His empathetic resonance hummed at his fingertips, useless without contact, a taunting reminder of how close he needed to get to fight back.

The Reaper’s voice slithered through the dark, low and amused, like a predator savoring the chase.

"Running already, little mouse? The box is smaller than you think."

Kael’s breath hitched, his eyes darting to the side mirrors of parked cars, catching glimpses of movement—too fast, too fluid.

He veered behind a rusted van, crouching low, his chest heaving.

The air felt heavier, the shadows thicker, as if her presence was bending the world around her.

He needed a plan, a touch, anything to turn the tide.

A soft click of boots echoed nearby, taunting and unhurried.

Kael peeked around the van’s edge, spotting Whiplash stalking through the pillars, her whip dragging like a serpent’s tail, her face twisted with fury.

"Gonna skin you for that little stunt, pretty boy," she hissed, her voice raw from pain.

Kael’s lips twitched into a shaky grin.

"Gotta catch me first," he muttered under his breath, slipping to the next car, his movements silent but frantic.

He needed to isolate one of them, get close enough to use his power.

Whiplash was angry—sloppy.

She was his best shot.

He crouched behind a sedan, his fingers brushing the cold metal for balance.

Whiplash’s shadow stretched across the floor, her whip coiling for a strike.

Kael held his breath, waiting, then rolled out at the last second as her whip cracked, shattering the sedan’s side mirror.

Glass sprayed, and Kael lunged, closing the distance in a heartbeat.

His hand grazed her bare arm, a fleeting touch, but enough.

Empathetic resonance flared, amplifying her pain into a white-hot surge.

Whiplash screamed, her knees buckling as she clutched her arm, the whip falling limp.

"You little—!" she gasped, her voice breaking.

Kael didn’t linger.

He scrambled back, diving behind another pillar just as the muscular man roared into view, his pants now hiked up, his face a mask of rage.

"You’re dead!" he bellowed, charging like a freight train.

Kael’s pulse spiked.

He darted between cars, weaving through the basement’s labyrinth, the man’s heavy footsteps thundering behind him.

The guy was fast for his size, closing the gap too quickly.

Kael’s eyes flicked to a low-hanging pipe overhead.

He leapt, grabbing it with both hands, swinging his legs up just as the man lunged.

The guy’s hands grasped air, and Kael dropped, landing a kick to the back of his head.

The man stumbled, crashing into a car hood with a metallic thud, denting it.

"Stay down," Kael panted, sprinting again, his lungs screaming.

He needed distance, time to think.

The Reaper was still out there, watching, waiting.

Enjoying?

This was her game, and he was just prolonging the inevitable.

A soft laugh echoed through the basment, chilling his blood.

"You’re fun, mouse," the Reaper’s voice purred, closer than before. "Most B Classers don’t last this long."

Kael’s stomach twisted.

He ducked behind a concrete support, pressing his back to it, his sweat-slick hands trembling.

His power was useless without touch, and she knew it.

She was toying with him, letting him run, letting him hope.

He scanned the shadows, catching a flicker of movement—her silhouette, gliding between pillars like a wraith, her red eyes glinting like embers.

"Come on, Kael," she taunted, her voice dripping with mock sweetness.

"One touch, right? That’s all you need. I’ll even let you try."

His jaw clenched.

She was baiting him, but what choice did he have?

He slipped to the next car, his boots silent, his eyes locked on her shadow.

If he could just get close—

Snap.

A shadow tendril lashed around his ankle, yanking him off his feet.

Kael’s face nearly kissed the concrete, but another tendril coiled around his throat, jerking him upward.

His boots dangled a foot above the floor, his breath choking off as more shadows slithered from the ground, wrapping his torso, legs, arms—everything but his palms, left free but useless, unable to reach anything solid.

Kael gagged, a tendril tightening over his mouth, muffling his curses.

His vision swam, his body straining against the binds.

The Reaper stepped into view, her boots clicking with deliberate menace, each sound a nail in his coffin.

Her red eyes gleamed, her smile cruel and triumphant.

"It’s funny when the prey runs," she said, her voice low and lazy, dripping with cold amusement.

"A mouse in a box with a snake. Even if you land a bite, but do you really think you can escape?"

Kael’s chest heaved, his fingers twitching, desperate for contact.

The shadows parted around his neck, exposing his sweat-slick skin to her cold fingers.

She wrapped her hand around his throat, her grip firm but almost gentle, savoring his helplessness.

"I’ll just knock you out for a bit," she whispered, her breath brushing his ear, her euphoria palpable. "Don’t worry. I like to watch."

Her fingers tightened, cutting off his air.

Kael’s vision dimmed, his arms jerking uselessly, the world fading at the edges.

Her smile widened, a cruel, victorious curve, her red eyes alight with sadistic glee.

.

"Yesss. Just like that."

.

.

"Ahh~ It feels so good~"

Then—

The basement lights flickered.
