Chapter 31: Did I get him wrong?

Nathaniel shot to his feet, the accusation hitting him like a knife to the chest.

She had no idea what he was trying to do, what his real intentions were. Yes, he had made the demand, but not to take anything from her. He had wanted to wrest the company away from that incompetent fool, Isaac, before it crumbled completely.

He was going to save it, for her, for Nora, and hand it back to her entirely. But hearing her accusation, seeing the betrayal in her eyes, it stung more than he had expected.

Zara didn’t stop. "My mother poured everything into that business. She built it from scratch. It was her sweat and blood, her sacrifices, that got it listed. And after her, Nora stepped up. She turned it into a powerhouse. The company thrived under her leadership."

Her chin lifted, defiance burning in her gaze. "This business is their legacy. Their dream. And I won’t let you steal it from my family."

The last shred of warmth in Nathaniel’s expression vanished. When he spoke again, his voice was sharp, void of emotion. "Don’t speak like you know everything. Your father is useless. He can’t keep the business afloat. If I hadn’t stepped in, it would have already gone under. I’m trying to save it, not steal it."

His eyes went cold, like a door slamming shut. "You think you care more about that company than I do? I understand better than you what this company meant to Nora. Don’t dare accuse me."

He raised a finger at her. "Like it or not, I am taking over the company. And I’d love to see who thinks they can stop me."

He turned to leave. But he paused at the doorway, casting a hard look back over his shoulder.

"Don’t wander around," he said coldly. "Stay put."

And with that, he walked out.

Zara sat motionless. Nathaniel’s words echoed in her mind, stirring up a storm of conflicted emotions.

’Did I get him wrong?’ The question pressed on her.

She leaned back against the headboard, her earlier rage beginning to dissolve into uncertainty.

The truth was, her father had failed miserably. And Jaxon – he was completely incapable. They had been dragging the company down for years. If things continued unchecked, it really would collapse.

A knock at the door broke her thoughts.

"Madam..." Mrs. Jules stepped in, pulling Zara’s suitcase behind her. "Where has Sir gone?"

Zara recalled what Nathaniel had said earlier. "To the office," she replied quietly.

Mrs. Jules blinked, clearly shocked. "He has already gone to work?" Her brows knitted with worry. "It’s Sunday. Still, he went to work. Last night, he worked until late, then got up at the crack of dawn for that conference call. I thought he’d at least eat something before leaving again."

She shook her head with a weary expression. "But no... he skipped breakfast and rushed out. I don’t know why he pushes himself so hard. He acts like his health doesn’t even matter."

Zara felt a sudden pang in her chest.

After Nora’s death, Nathaniel fell apart. Grief had swallowed him whole, and he had drowned himself in alcohol, so much so that it damaged his stomach.

Since then, Zara had taken it upon herself to care for him, making sure he never stayed on an empty stomach for too long.

Now, knowing he hadn’t eaten anything all morning, it hit her harder than she expected.

Mrs. Jules’s voice pulled her back to the present. "What would you like to eat, Madam? Just tell me, I’ll make it for you."

"I’m not hungry," Zara replied quietly. "Just help me unpack my suitcase. And... bring my drawing supplies."

"Of course, Madam."

Mrs. Jules moved to the suitcase and unzipped it. On top, carefully packed, were drawing supplies and design drafts.

"I’ll set these on the table for you," Mrs. Jules said softly, placing the materials on the table by the window.

Zara’s eyes followed her movements. "Can you help me up?"

Mrs. Jules rushed to her side and gently helped her swing her legs over the bed. She guided her carefully toward the chair, one hand steady at Zara’s back. As she eased her down onto the seat, she said, "Your crutch is in the hallway. I’ll fetch it."

She turned to go, but Zara’s voice stopped her.

"Mrs. Jules."

The housekeeper paused, turning back.

Zara hesitated. Her eyes dropped for a moment, then lifted again. "Please send lunch to Nathaniel. Something light that won’t upset his stomach."

A soft, knowing smile spread across Mrs. Jules’s face. Despite all the anger, the pain, and the distance, Zara still cared.

"Of course, Madam. I’ll prepare something and have it sent to him."

With that, she quietly left the room.

As soon as Mrs. Jules stepped into the hallway, she pulled out her phone and dialed a number sneakily.

Her face lit up with a grin as the call connected. "Madam," she whispered excitedly, "there is good news. It looks like they have patched things up. I’ve never seen Sir so gentle with Madam Zara before. He carried her in his arms, wouldn’t even let her walk on her injured leg. You should have been here to see it."

On the other end, Paulina let out a sigh of relief, though her voice still carried a trace of worry. "At last, my foolish grandson is starting to see what he has. But this isn’t enough. It’s been five years, and there is no movement in Zara’s stomach. That’s not good. They need to grow closer."

There was a brief pause before Paulina’s voice returned. "Listen carefully. I’m going to give you a recipe—an old soup my mother-in-law swore by. Get a pen and paper."

Mrs. Jules grabbed a notepad and began scribbling as Paulina dictated the ingredients and steps.

"Give it to Nathaniel," Paulina instructed. "Tell him it’s for his stomach. That’s not a lie, but it’ll help in other ways too."

"I understand, Madam," Mrs. Jules replied eagerly. "I’ll get everything ready and make it tonight."

With a final word of encouragement, Paulina ended the call.

She sat back in her chair, her fingers folding gently in her lap.

"It’s time for you to become a father again, Nathaniel," she murmured, her eyes sparkling with quiet determination. "Only then will you keep Zara by your side."
