Chapter 29: Nathaniel’s care – genuine or false?

Zara clenched her jaw so hard it throbbed. Every fiber of her wanted to yell, to resist, but the thought of creating chaos outside her friend’s apartment made her bite it back. Swallowing her fury, she stayed quiet, letting Nathaniel carry her out.

He took her silence as surrender, and it fed his pride.

A smug grin crept onto his face.

Outside, Roberto stood waiting with the car door open. As he approached the car, Nathaniel’s eyes locked on the security guard a little away from them.

Nathaniel stopped, turned toward the man, and raised his chin with quiet confidence. "She is my wife, and I’m not a stalker."

The guard’s face turned ghost-white. He dropped his gaze, flustered, and turned away without a word.

Zara caught the strange interaction and narrowed her eyes, sensing something off. But before she could voice it, Nathaniel gently set her down in the back seat.

Once he climbed in beside her, she turned, unable to hold back. "What was that about? Do you know him?"

Nathaniel glanced at her, then noticed her seatbelt still hanging loose. He leaned in. "It’s a long story," he murmured. "I’ll tell you someday." He pulled the belt across her and clicked it into place.

Zara froze. Her breath caught in her throat. His closeness felt overwhelming, too sudden, too intimate.

Nathaniel didn’t pull away. His eyes lingered on hers, dark and unreadable. "I changed my cologne." His voice grew softer. "It’s a milder one now. I hope you’d like it."

Zara’s fingers curled tightly in her lap. Her chest felt tight. She should have recoiled, pushed him away. But her heart was pounding against her chest like a drum, and she couldn’t understand why.

Nathaniel felt eyes on him and glanced up at the rearview mirror. He caught Roberto staring at them. His expression turned to stone.

"What are you waiting for?" he snapped. "Drive."

Startled, Roberto fumbled to start the engine and quickly pulled the car away from the curb.

The ride was silent.

Zara sat with her face turned toward the window, but her mind was anything but still. Her thoughts spiraled as she wondered why Nathaniel had tossed the divorce papers away.

She had expected him to sign them without hesitation. After all, he was the one who had wanted out.

So why the sudden resistance?

He had never loved her. He had admitted that. And worse, he had once accused her of being nothing more than a gold digger, her greedy family only hungry for his wealth. He had lashed out at them, even demanded a fifty percent share of the company in retaliation. The wounds from that time still throbbed.

And now, this man, who once looked at her with disdain, was dragging her back to his home like none of that ever happened.

She couldn’t make sense of it.

Zara was so lost in her thoughts that she didn’t even realize the car had entered the gates of his villa. It was only when the vehicle stopped that she blinked out of her daze.

She turned to him, lips parting to speak, to demand an answer, but Nathaniel was already out of the car.

In seconds, he was at her side. He opened the door and leaned in. Without giving her a chance to protest, he gently gathered her into his arms again.

She tensed but said nothing as he carried her into the familiar villa, the place she once called home.

Everything felt the same, but nothing was the same.

Mrs. Jules greeted her with a warm smile. "Madam, you are back."

Zara’s cheeks turned a deep shade of red. She forced a faint smile in return, but quickly averted her gaze, burying her face slightly into Nathaniel’s shoulder to avoid the awkwardness.

It was the first time he was carrying her in front of Mrs. Jules, and Zara was embarrassed.

But Mrs. Jules was very happy to see the couple together, believing they had resolved their differences. Her smile faded the moment her eyes fell on the bandage wrapped around Zara’s leg.

"Oh dear, how did you get hurt?" she asked, her voice laced with concern.

Before Zara could open her mouth, Nathaniel answered with mock cheer.

"Your Madam has been doing her best to explore the city, hopping around with her injured leg. The doctor told her to rest, but she wouldn’t listen. Now look, she made it worse. Can’t even stand without support."

Zara shot him a glare, her jaw tightening. He wrapped humiliation in concern so neatly it was almost impressive. To everyone else, he sounded caring. But to her, it was a slap disguised as sympathy.

Mrs. Jules asked, "Is it really that serious?"

"Serious enough," Nathaniel replied briskly. "She needs full bed rest. Keep an eye on her. Don’t let her move around too much."

Mrs. Jules nodded rapidly. "Yes, yes. I’ll look after her."

Nathaniel carried Zara into the bedroom and gently laid her on the bed.

But Zara was seething. Her fists clenched the sheets.

"I have to head to the office," he said, his voice much softer now. "There are a few urgent matters to handle. I’ll be back soon, and we’ll have dinner together."

His words were not enough to ebb her anger.

Zara’s eyes burned as she snapped, "How long do you plan to keep me locked in this house?"

Nathaniel narrowed his eyes, disbelief flickering across his face. "Locking you up?" he repeated. "I brought you back home. This isn’t some kind of prison."

Zara’s glare sharpened. "This isn’t my home anymore. Don’t you get that?"

He exhaled slowly, trying to hold back the rising tension. He knew his past actions had upset her. Now wasn’t the time to fight.

"You need rest," he said, softening his tone. "That’s what matters right now. I’ll have Eugen drop by and check on your leg."

He reached for the blanket, gently pulling it over her and tucking it in. But Zara jerked away, shoving his hands aside.

"I don’t want your care," she snapped. "I don’t want you. Just stop pretending."

That struck him.

The calm cracked. His scowl returned full force.

"What the hell is wrong with you?" he shot back. "You said I never cared, that I was cold, distant, always too busy for you. Yes, I admit I put work before you. But now I’m willing to make you a priority. Isn’t that what you wanted? Aren’t you happy?"
