Chapter 20: Is she cheating on me?
Nathaniel’s smile wavered as Zara’s face flickered through his mind. The memory of her pushing him away the day before still lingered. His pride had been wounded. He had kept his distance since then, unsure of how to approach her again or what to even say.
But Zane’s invitation felt like a welcoming chance to smooth over the silence between them. Spending time together didn’t sound so bad.
"Okay. I’ll come with you."
"Yah!" Zane cheered excitedly. "We’ll have fun together."
A smile still rested on his lips as he ended the call. For the first time in days, a flicker of peace settled in his chest.
He thought of picking her up for dinner, asking if she needed anything for the amusement park trip.

As the golden hues of the setting sun spilled across the city skyline, Zara wrapped up her day’s work, ready to leave. Just then, Bree appeared beside her, practically buzzing with energy.
"Ready to leave?" Bree chirped, her grin almost too wide to contain.
Zara raised an amused brow, a knowing smile tugging at her lips. "Someone is in a good mood. What’s going on?"
Blushing, Bree tucked a strand of hair behind her ear. "I have a date tonight," she whispered, leaning toward her. "And I’m not coming back home."
Zara let out a teasing laugh. "Ah, so that’s why you were in such a hurry all day."
Bree’s cheeks flushed a deeper shade of pink.
"Go on, then. Enjoy your evening," Zara said, fishing her car keys from her bag. "Here...Take my car."
Bree blinked in shock, holding up her hands in protest. "What? No way... I can’t take your car. I’ll grab a cab."
"Take it," Zara insisted firmly, slipping the keys into Bree’s hand. "My ankle is still acting up—I shouldn’t be driving. I’ll ask Jasper to pick me up instead."
Only then did Bree relent, her face lighting up. "Thank you, Zara," she gushed, wrapping her arms around Zara’s neck.
"Go," Zara chuckled. "Have fun."
Bree waved over her shoulder, practically skipping toward the door, her joy infectious.
Several minutes later...
Nathaniel eased his car to a stop along the curb outside Zara’s office. But the moment he looked at the office building, he noticed Zara with a man, engaged in conversation with a man, his expression hardened.
She smiled brightly, her body angled slightly toward him, and the man leaned in, just a little too close for Nathaniel’s liking.
The muscles in his neck went taut as a scowl formed on his face.
"What the hell... Who is that?" he muttered. His gaze fixed on the stranger, his mind already racing with unwelcome thoughts.
The way Zara stood there, looking calm and composed with that man, ignited a flare of possessiveness in his chest. The longer he stared, the deeper the scowl etched across his face.
Just as Nathaniel reached for the door handle and prepared to step out of the car, his gaze froze on the sight that sent a jolt through his chest. Zara was climbing onto a man’s bike. She slipped her arms around the man’s waist, her body leaning into his with a natural ease that made Nathaniel’s blood run cold.
She looked comfortable. There wasn’t a flicker of hesitation in her demeanor as if this closeness was familiar to her.
A storm brewed behind Nathaniel’s eyes. His hands clenched around the steering wheel. The image seared into his mind.
’Is she cheating on me?’ The thought struck like a dagger.
He had never given her love, but he had respected the sanctity of their marriage. After Nora, Zara was the only woman in his life, and despite their distance, he had stayed loyal to her, never strayed, not even in thought.
And yet here she was, melting against another man as if their marriage meant nothing.
"Is he the reason you are so eager to walk away from me?" His lips pulled into a tight line. "You owe me an explanation," he growled under his breath.
He slammed the door shut and restarted the engine, the tires screeching softly as he pulled out. His eyes remained locked on the bike weaving ahead through the traffic. No matter how many cars passed or how many turns were taken, he never lost sight of it.
Then, the bike veered off onto a quieter road, lined with modest buildings and sparse streetlights. It rolled to a stop in front of a humble apartment complex, and the iron gate creaked open as the guard stepped aside to let them in.
Nathaniel slowed his car and parked across the street, his gaze scanning the surroundings. His knuckles whitened around the steering wheel as he watched Zara and the man disappear behind the gates.
"This is where she is staying?" he muttered, a bitter fire rising in his chest. "With him?"
She had told him she was staying at Bree’s. But clearly, that had been a lie.
His fury simmered. "You really thought I’d never find out? That you could run away so easily?" He threw open the car door and stormed across the road.
Just as he reached the gate, a firm hand stopped him. The guard, with a stern face, stepped in his path.
"You need to sign in first. Write down the apartment number you are visiting."
The guard slid a logbook toward him, holding out a pen.
Nathaniel stared blankly, suddenly caught off guard.
Apartment number?
He didn’t know it. He didn’t even know the man’s name.
"I don’t know."
The guard raised a brow. "Then, at least give me the name of the person you are visiting. I’ll check the resident list."
Nathaniel’s jaw tightened further. "I don’t know that either," he bit out. "Just now, a man came in with a woman on a bike. That woman is my wife. I’m here for her."
The guard looked him up and down, suspicion flickering in his eyes. "Oh...You dress like a gentleman, but you are out here stalking a woman? Get lost."
"What?"
"I said get out!" the guard snapped, already stepping forward and shoving him back from the gate. "I don’t care who you are. You are not getting in. Don’t come back here again, or I’m calling the police."
Before Nathaniel could protest, the gate slammed shut in his face.
"You?" he growled under his breath, eyes blazing. No one had dared humiliate him like this in years. His blood boiled with a fury. "I’ll sue you for this," he seethed.
But the guard didn’t even look his way. He just waved a dismissive hand and turned his back, disappearing into his little post by the entrance.
Nathaniel stood frozen for a moment, chest heaving, before he spat a curse and yanked out his phone. He called Zara, but it rang and rang, and finally went dead. No one answered it.
He stared down at the screen as if it had personally betrayed him, and then let out a sharp, humorless laugh.
"Ignoring my calls now, huh?" he muttered bitterly. "Zara... you are quite capable."
He threw himself into the driver’s seat and slammed the door shut. Rage swirled inside him like a storm.
He dialed Roberto. As soon as it connected, he barked into the phone, "Find out who Zara is staying with. Every single detail."
